Game 70 Recap: Yankees 0, Braves 4

It was another shutout win for the Braves -- their second in a row -- on a hot but breezy night at Turner Field. With the wind blowing in, Tommy Hanson and the Braves bullpen kept the Yankees hitters in the ballpark and away from home plate. Hanson won his third game in four starts while pitching through some wildness on the mound. He allowed 4 hits, 5 walks, and hit a batter, but he didn't allow a run; twice pitching out of a bases loaded situation. The Yankees were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.

Peter Moylan came on to bail Hanson out of a jam in the sixth by getting Derek Jeter to ground into an inning ending double play. Mike Gonzalez pitched a perfect eighth, and Rafael Soriano closed out the game in the ninth.

The Braves did all the scoring they needed in the third inning. With two outs, Yunel Escobar singled, then stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Chipper Jones then walked, and Brian McCann doubled off the left field wall (barely missing a homerun) to score Escobar. Garret Anderson follwed McCann with another double to score two and put the Braves up by three runs. That was all the scoring until the eighth inning when Brian McCann put a little more mustard on the ball and got it over the wall for his seventh homerun of the season to put the Braves up by a score of 4-to-nothing.

Tommy Hanson seemed to have a good batter, bad batter syndrome tonight. He'd look dominant against one guy, then he'd walk the next batter, seemingly losing his ability to locate his pitches from batter to batter. He dominated Jorge Posada, striking him out three times; Posada struck out a total of four times on the night, collecting the golden somrero.

Hanson's good work in the first inning -- getting the Yankees batters 1-2-3 -- quieted down the Yankees fans in the crowd, and the Braves good pitching all night kept them muffled. Some fans in the left field corner next to the 755 club chanted hip-hip-hooray when Brian McCann came to the plate in the eighth inning -- mocking the Yankees chant for Jorge Posada, hip-hip-Jorge. Overall, though, I observed a fairly docile Yankees crowd -- they didn't have much to cheer for tonight.

Let's see how long the Braves can keep this shutout streak going.

Yankees fans get a bad rap but they’re really actually good fans. I’ve been to two Yankees-Braves games at the old stadium and never had any more than some playful ragging. If you sit out with the bleacher creatures, then you deserve whatever they give you. Now mets fans? They’re mostly a-holes, but Yankees fans aren’t half bad.

This statement is very true.

Yankee/Cub/Red Sox fans that are from NY/CHI/BOS that actually travel are mostly decent people. They understand the unspoken rule of respecting another’s turf. Unfortunately, the reason we so often see degenerate baseball fans during those teams’ visits is because those three teams have the biggest bandwagons of dbaggy fans on the face of the planet, and since they have no true allegiances to anyone, they fall back on to what comes to them naturally – being dbags.

On Sportscenter the WHOLE focus was on Wang being his usual meatball self. The only mention of Hanson's name was a mistake, from a highlight when Moylan was pitching.

Pathetic.

The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault. -Ty Cobb

of course he’s good. you just never show him. instead, you’re all over Brett Favre and Tom Brady’s nuts. Not to mention they pretty much analyze every pitch from a yankee or red sox pitcher and then slid it in at the end…oh, braves win 4-0.

agreed.

the only way to really get back at them is to not watch, which makes their ratings go down and would make them change their strategies. Unfortunately, none of us are going to make enough difference because there are so many front-runners out there.

Say what you want, but ESPN runs a kick-ass business, not necessarily based on fan satisfaction, but based on finances. I don’t think they really care about a few Braves fans as much as they care about getting the “Wang sucks” buzz running amuck with all the Yanks fans and non-brave-fan yankee-haters (wow, complicated noun).

Speaking of Buster......from his latest blog...

A few hours before Tommy Hanson pitched out of trouble over and over again and the Braves shut out the Yankees, Atlanta GM Frank Wren spoke with optimism — and who could blame him? The Braves have been one of baseball’s worst offensive teams; their outfield production was easily the worst in the majors, prompting Wren to trade for Nate McLouth. And those Braves are four games out of first place.

“I think none of us foresaw that the (Phillies and Mets) would have,” said Wren. “We’re sitting where we thought we would be… I actually feel like over the last week, we’ve started to make some strides. The last five days, we’ve swung the bat as well as well as we have all year.”

Casey Kotchman has been swinging better of late, Wren says, but hasn’t had a lot to show for it yet. Garret Anderson ripped a two-run double on Tuesday night, and is hitting .435 over the last week. McLouth has helped the Atlanta offense, creating more opportunities for Chipper Jones, Brian McCann and others. If the Braves can muster any offensive consistency, they’ll be dangerous because of their rotation and bullpen depth.

Wren is open to adding a hitter “who is available and who fits what we need,” but like a lot of other GMs, he reports that there are few players on the market right now. And in the end, Wren’s hands could be tied because of expense. “There’s very little financial flexibility (among other teams), and for us, as well,” said Wren. (Yet another reason why the trade market will probably be a dud: It’s unclear whether even the Dodgers can take on money, as Bill Shaikin writes.)

How long can we keep this streak going?

I feel a strong start for KK coming tomorow. The Yanks can’t hit the ball out of the park very well outside of their home bandbox and their bats are cool enough not to string much together. Its a fair bet we won’t shut them out tomorow but it should be a low scoring game.

Hanson is coming along much faster than I expected. Yes, I expected him to do very well but his poise on the mound is awesome. Never looked fazed even with men is scoring position against the Yankees.

Right now I feel like a game pitched by Hanson, Lowe, JJ, or Vaz we should win because the pitcher isn’t going to give them much. KK has been getting better but is still fairly inconsitant IMO.

Anybody wanna retry that poll to see who we would take out of Hanson, Price and Strasberg? Price got knocked around hard last night while Tommy was busy blanking the Yankees and moving to 3-0.

by Fischerking on Jun 24, 2009 8:52 AM EDT reply actions

Not sure I agree with

Hanson “coming along much faster”.

Having the other team go 0-8 with RISP is essentially getting lucky, and posting a 2 WHIP for the game and having 0 runs scored against you is also lucky. Finally, when the team is scoring 6.5 runs a game for you and you are 3-0 with a no decision doesn’t mean you’re coming along. The walks are way, way too high and sooner or later are going to turn into runs.

He’s obviously got talent, but lets not paint this rosier than it is. If he keeps doing exactly what he’s been doing he’s going to get batted around, big time.

I agree

I have to agree with you. I have watched Hanson in all of his 4 starts so far. The first game he made some mistakse that were right over the plate. He hasn’t made any mistakes like that since his first starts. I think that he is trying to pitch too perfect and that is why he is walking people. But you can defn see his composure. Last night after the error that Chipper made a lot of young pitchers could have easily crumbled and had a legitimate excuse. Hanson pitched through that inning. I think that he is going to continue to get better and eventually as the walks go down he’ll pitch deeper and deeper into the game. Baring injury I really think he’ll be the ace of our staff next year. His stuff is just ridiculous and he has no problem throwing any of his 4 pitches no matter what the count is.

Maybe it did have something to do with them not having much to cheer about, but i felt that the Yankee fans were either outnumbered by us, or just quiet. Anytime i heard people try to get some Yankee chants going, they were quickly booed out by Braves fans. At least in the upper deck. I thought the Braves were well represented last night, i can say i’m proud of the fans for showing up. It was really no comparison to the nauseating Red Sox series i went to a couple years ago. So in closing, suck it Francouer.

The sad thing is

It takes a strong contingent of opposing team fans for Braves “fans” to want to show up, just to oppose them. It’s like without something to be defiant against, the fans won’t show up. I was pleased to see the 40,000+ attendance, but it kind of makes me sad knowing that once New York and Boston head out of town, it’ll be back to the same old sub 30,000 attendance numbers of ambivalent fans who only cheer for Jeff Francoeur and Chipper Jones.

Think if there was a ‘WET’ (White Entertainment Television)…….that would be seen by blacks as “rascist,” and the NAACP would have a field day calling for that to be shut down.

And an “all-white” college would be “racist” as well.

Double standards galore. I work in education administration, and I can tell you……black colleges are no fun to work with.

It’s really sad too, because obviously, it’s causing seperation in our society, but they don’t see it that way at all. It’s all about them. Many of my black friends openly voice the same opinion that I do.

i need someone to reassure me that i did not waste a #2. I rationalized it by asking myself “who else out there is going to be worth that waiver priority?”

Maybe Homer Bailey when he gets another shot, but I think he is on someone’s bench right now anyway…

I freaking love the NL

I love watching managers and players from the AL try and figure out how to play a game that is more like chess than checkers.

When AL pitchers attempt to hit or bunt, it makes me think of a girly girl trying to bait a hook.

No offense to the lady fans. Note I said “girly girls.”

I’m with Bobby, the designated hitter rule is………….stupid.

it was made for people

who can’t play the game the real way.

HaHaHa, I had to laugh at that one and your “clarification”.

No screaming like a sissy in fishing – you’ll scare the dang fish.

(from a non-girly-girl who has baited a hook many times)

And I too prefer the NL way of making the pitcher hit. Takes better management of the game to win that way.
