Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/22
Tomorrow I will be at the Sally League All Star game. It will be my only chance to see any Rome prospects since the R-Braves do not come to Charleston at all this season. Our very own Zeke Spruill will start the game and I just happen to have bought a nice new camera recently so I will do my best to get some awesome pictures. Other Braves on the roster will be JJ Hoover (I am pumped to see him pitch), Luis Sumoza and Jesus Sucre. None of our guys will be in the preceding Home Run Derby, but I'll hopefully get there in time to see that as well.
Gwinnett 5, Louisville 11
- R. Gorecki 2-4 HR(6), BB, SB(9), 2K
- B. Canizares 2-5
- G. Norton 2-4 HR(1), 2 RBI
This game was even worse than the final score indicates. The Braves put 4 on the board late, but the pitcher gave up 5 homers on the night, 3 of them by starter Tony Armas. The offense couldn't do much of anything against once über prospect Homer Bailey. He went 7 strong and struck out 8 men with only 2 walks. The guy has posted a .71 ERA in June. I can't believe he will be in AAA much longer.
Birmingham 2, Mississippi 3
- JC Boscan 2-4 2B, 2 RBI
- E. Campbell 2-4
- S. Diamond 6.1IP 7H 2R 3BB 5K
You know looking back at Scott Diamond's season, he might be one of the most hardluck pitchers in baseball right now. He has allowed just 1 earned run in a 7 of his last 10 starts and he is 3-7 on the year. His ERA would be spectacular if not for one bad start where he allowed 7 runs and it is still very good at 3.59. I am going to have to say at higher levels he is going to be a LOOGY unless he breaks out in some special way because he OWNS them to the tune of a .219 AVG vs a .322 AVG against RHs. Either way the guy induces a ton of ground outs and will be useful in some capacity.
Myrtle Beach - All Star Break
The onyl Pelican's to make the team were Jason Heyward and Cody Johnson. I am a little surprised that Freeman didn't get on, but he just recently turned it on and his power hasn't come on quite yet.
Rome - All Star Break
I'll be there!

while there
While you are there, make sure to note a kid named Tyler Cloyd. Pitches for Lakewood Blue Claws (Phillies). He’s one of my best friends, and he’s gonna be really good. Reminds me a little of a Hudson type. It’s not so much blazing speed, but real good command of 4 pitches, and filthy stuff.
Anyway… he’s my beer pong partner, my washers partner, and an all around great kid. I know he’s a Phillie, but maybe they’ll trade him to us down the road.
Heaven is a baseball field.

That Norton kid looks good, we could use a bat like that off the bench.

Diamond and Javy should talk …
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

Freeman was in a pretty close race...
His numbers aren’t as sexy, but they aren’t really much worse than Brandon Waring, the guy who’s starting ahead of him. Still, if there’s a tiebreaker, it’s probably nice to give it to a guy who’s 23 and will probably list an All-Star half in the Carolina League as a career highlight rather than Freeman, who would probably have seen it as just a small step to a long major league career.

Have fun at the game! The All Star ones are always fun. Not only do you get to see the Braves guys, but you get to see Tim Beckham, Derek Norris, Anthony Rizzo, and my man David Mailman. If you can, get down and talk with the Braves guys, they’re all good kids. Take lots of pictures!

No offense to Robert Brooks, but all that prospect talk from last season was a little silly. The kid is 22 and he’s starting his 2nd season in a short season team. Unless he dominates and moves up the ladder really quickly, he’s just gonna be filler.

He actually just turned 21.
Born 5/29/88. And who knows…other notable prospects who were there at that age include: Brandon Hicks, Travis Jones, Phil Britton, JM Owings, YUNEL, Max Ramirez, Clint Sammons, JC Holt, and Carl Loadenthal. Not studs, no, but decent minor league prospects.

Alright, my math is bad apparently. First of all, we’ll cross off Britton, Holt, Loadenthal, and, as much as it pains me, Owings as decent prospects.
Escobar was 22 in his first pro season at Danville and Ramirez was 20 and in his second pro season
Hicks, Jones, and Sammons were all 21 when they played in Danville, but they were in their first pro seasons, not their second.

It's not that inconceivable, though...
that they wanted him to work on something specific in XST, and if he can apply that, he could jump a level (or even two) by the end of the season.

I really like Danville’s pitching… It’s nice to be able to say that every year.
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
