Nuts. Or, the story of how the Braves almost acquired Jason Bay

Oh, this makes me weep out loud (hat tip:  MLBTR):

According to sources familiar with the situation, the Friday before last season's trade deadline -- which ultimately saw the the Red Sox trade Manny Ramirez, Brandon Moss, and Craig Hansen to get Bay in return -- the Braves came just minutes away from securing the services of the outfielder for themselves.

The deal would have sent Concepcion Rodriguez, Brent Lillibridge, Brandon Jones, and Jeff Locke (the North Conway, NH, native who was ultimately dealt to the Pirates this season to acquire McLouth) to Pittsburgh for Bay.

It seemed like such a certainty that the Braves actually had the uniform, with Bay's name affixed to the back, made up. But, according to the sources, in the end Pirates team president Frank Coonelly stepped in, nixing the deal because there wasn't enough major-league talent coming back in return.

If only... if only. But hey, there's always this off-season, and all we'd have to give up then is money.

Bay is one of my favorite players. This news just sucks in ways that we cannot imagine. All we had to do was give Pitt FYF (the MLB “ready” guy they wanted) and it would have probably happened…

oh well.

Sidenote: Does this writer really think that Wakefield pitched a good game??? We were tee-ing off on him all day long! He looked like he was throwing batting practice out there. Sadly, most of our hits were right at people, but still, it isnt like we were missing with the swings.

Also, having the ump ring Chipper up the way he did kinda changed the course of the game too.

Really?

Francoeur was that guy? I find it hard to believe he was the deal breaker. How do you know?

I don't

Hence the word “probably”.

And, I am looking at this in hind-sight. Hypothetically, FYF fills the “MLB-ready” player that the Pirates owner wanted.

It’s all just speculation at this point.

No sense in crying over spilled milk, but I just wish that we could have landed Bay. If all it took was a “MLB-ready” player, how many of us would be pissed to get rid of FYF last year at that point?

Yeah, cause Hansen and Moss are such great major leaguers. This feels like when a couple of the older kids in the neighborhood allow one of the younger kids to play with them, then let the younger kid take all the blame for breaking a window.

Trade

Don’t forget, Pittsburgh also got Andy LaRoche and a pitching prospect from L.A. Overall, that package looks better to me than the rumored Braves deal.

by Yakker on Jun 22, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm…now I have to look at it closer.

Ok, so Moss and Jones are a wash. They’re both 25, both hit lefthanded, and look like they’d produce pretty much the exact same in the bigs.

LaRoche is a pretty solid win over Lillibridge. They’re both the same age and Lillibridge has much more defensive flexibility, but LaRoche is just a better hitter.

Morris vs. Locke is a little closer. Morris is 10 months older, and he’s a righty, which is less of a premium. He just started pitching this year so in only 3 High A starts, he’s 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Last year in Low A he was 2-6 in 20 starts with a 3.47 ERA and something like a 1.40 WHIP (can’t find an exact one). Locke, in 13 High A starts this year, is 2-4 with a 4.85 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP after going 5-12 with a 4.06 ERA and a 1.34 ERA in 24 Low A starts last year. So they’re pretty close; I’d personally go with the slightly younger lefty, but it’s a take your preference kind of thing.

With the other pieces, Hansen and Rodriguez, it’s closer than it seems. Hansen is a 25 year old righty with a 4-9 record, 6.34 ERA, and 1.71 WHIP in 95 major league games and he’s only pitched in 5 total games this season. He’s had injury issues and been a bit of a headcase. Rodriguez is a toolsy 22 year old outfielder struggling at AA after a very successful season at High A. Again, I think I’d take the pitcher, even given his problems, cause at least he’s played at the higher levels.

So yeah, I’d say the package they got back was probably better than what the Braves were offering. But, at the time, LaRoche was having a terrible year, Jones was playing very well and Concepcion was looking good, so who knows. I remember thinking at the time that we had a better offer.

Either way, I still think the Pirates GM, or actually the owner, got pulled into thinking that it was better PR to be a part of this major trade if you were going to ship off Bay.

Fair

I think that’s generally a pretty fair assessment, although put a few more thumbs on the scale for the actual deal over ATL’s proposed one, for the “pedigree” that comes with 1st round picks—Hansen and Morris were both first round picks. And of course Hansen had an excellent college career, FWIW.

by Yakker on Jun 22, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m actually incredibly biased against Hansen cause he’s suck a dick. I really can’t be objective with him. My friend always says he hopes he blows out his arm; I say I’d rather he’s healthy and is just terrible. If a guy is hurt, he can always say “if it wasn’t for that injury”, but if he just sucks he has to deal with it.

With the Sox and Yankees trying to outbid each other for Bay...

do we have a snowball’s chance in hell?

Doubt it

The Yankees will prob come in and do what they did with C.C. and just make a absurd offer right out of the gate.

It would be funny if neither one of those teams signed him tho although im not quite sure on who could come in and out bid them.

by drumzalicious on Jun 22, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's a misconception

The C.C. offer was not absurd. Yes, it was higher than what anyone else offered, but it wasn’t that much higher than what the Angels were offering him. I think it was either Gammons or Jayson Stark I saw report that, but the Yankees weren’t that far above the Angels in offer. Still sucks when the Braves can basically make what they think is the Godfather offer and the Yankees or Red Sox can just spit on that (i.e. AJ Burnett).

true

it wasnt really absurd just kinda straight to the point and they knew no one else would step in.

same thing with Tex.

Wonder if they will stop at Bay or get another OF to go as a DH as well.

My head hurts

Just imagine if we had JayBay this year.

AB: Jeff Francoeur
Pitching: Any pitcher in MLB
Runners: Escobar at 3rd, Chipper at 2nd, McCann at 1st.

Pitch 1: In play, out(s)

by mvhsbball on Jun 22, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually,

Bay is a great hitter, no doubt. But remember, he is over 30 and in a contract year. His agent is Scott Boras, and JayBay very much so fits the mold of a mercenary. That means that he wouldn’t likely be here beyond this year. Meanwhile, the Braves probably don’t go after McClouth with JayBay around. All in all, the season may not be all that much different.

by Andy Braves Fan on Jun 22, 2009 4:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

we wouldn't have needed to go after McLouth

we would have had Jason Bay hitting right behind Chipper. He alone would be the difference in 1st place and 4th place right now. Our pitching would be the same, our D a little better (we probably could absorb the bad offense of Logan and slot him in CF) and our offense MUCH better.

I don’t care if he is here beyond this year anyway. We have some studs making their way through the system in the next couple of years.

We actually could have benefited from someone that would have been around through 2011 so we dont have to rush Heyward and Freeman.

by drumzalicious on Jun 22, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

The gap between the Braves and Phillies is slightly bigger than that, the Braves still would have two black holes in the OF (Offensively). Even if the Braves were in it, they would have no chance to sign Bay long term and thus the Braves would have to find a whole new solution all over again this coming offseason. Remember, those studs (Heyward, Freeman) are in A ball right now, they are nowhere near ready. They probably aren’t in Atlanta until 2011.

by Andy Braves Fan on Jun 23, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see your point, but I still think that with Bay and Bay alone we are a 1st place team right now. Sure we still have two waste-of-space OFers (offensively), but I think that Bay makes our lineup good enough to overcome those two holes.

As far as 2010 and beyond is concerned, I think we cross that bridge when we come to it. Bay would have helped us last year (not that we had a shot with the injuries to our SP), and this year, I think he makes us the team to beat in the NLE.
