Game 67 Recap: Braves 5, Red Sox 6
The Braves loaded the bases in the ninth inning off of the Red Sox closer, but couldn't come away with a run when Matt Diaz swung at a fastball at eye level and came up empty to end the threat. With the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth, ex-Braves infielder Nick Green hit a Fenway-only homerun around Pesky's pole in right field for the walk-off win. The ninth pretty much typifies how the Braves day went.
The Braves out-hit the Red Sox 14-to-10, but they were just 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position, they left 9 men on base, they grounded into 2 double plays, and they played pretty sub-standard defense. The boiling point was reached in the seventh when Eric O'Flaherty gave up the lead on some questionable pitches, O'Flaherty argued with the umpire, Bobby Cox came out to intercede and was thrown out of the game, and Chipper Jones, who had his own questionable call in the first inning, had seen enough and let the home plate umpire have it and was also ejected from the game.
The ejections didn't fire up the team enough for them to take the lead. The Braves kept fighting, and Jair Jurrjens kept fighting even though he didn't have his best stuff, but in the end it wasn't enough... ahhh, the story of our season.

Bennett
Jeff Bennett is really starting to wear on me. It seems like every time something like this happens LATE to lose a game, it’s because of him. BPM will lose a game in the 7th, Sori & Gonzo occasionally in the 8th or 9th, but before I even read the recap & saw the box score the first thing that came to my mind was “Oh, I bet it was Bennett that lost this one…”
Fru-stra-tion.
Bennett = the new Blaine Boyer
as long as he’s pitching for us, we’re fucked. Simple as that. I would have rather had ANYONE else out there……….but what the fuck do I know.
The Braves get a (-100) every time Bennett goes out there, as far as I’m concerned.

You’re right…Bennett sucks because he induced a pop fly that wouldn’t have been a HR in any other major league stadium. If he was any good he would have traveled back in time and changed the dimensions of Fenway Park.
I guess it’s his fault that they didn’t turn the double play the night before as well, huh?

started out good ended.. well you saw
i think Chipper said it all in his interview i mean you could play the shoulda coulda woulda bull all day, the ump sucked and was very inconsistent with his calls yea we got what 2 calls our way? but still gotta make the right call all the time
but hey we out pitched, out batted, but couldnt win, its happened before and it will happen again… a loss is a loss and got to move on, beat the cubs tomorrow and sweep nyy and bos when they come in.. ok i’ll settle for two of three in the series’
also agree on bennett, and i think in the postgame show they said it, Raffy was gonna b brought in probably in the 10th or 11th if needed, personally i would have put Medlin in there he’s proven he’s good, and i trust him 100000000000x more than Bennett
and i mean Bennett is good on some days but when he HAS to come thru he doesnt,
I think saying MedlEn has "proven" himself is a bit premature.

that ump with the ’stache always sucks cock. Probably would have been a different ballgame, if he had called that strike a strike.

I will just hold off judgements till this next homestand is over. i think we can truly start to asses our club from there. Just hope we can turn things around for the better.

Is anyone else confused by why the hell we are keeping Medlen around rather than sending him back to AAA if we’re never going to pitch him. I haven’t really investigated, but it seems like he hasn’t really been used since pitching a bunch in an extra inning game a while back. I’m guessing he’s being used in the swing/longman role, and we haven’t had much need for that lately, but surely its time to either use him more as our bullpen seems to be sucking quite a bit lately, or send him back down so he actually gets some more pitching done.
by FromTheBellyOfWickman on Jun 21, 2009 7:34 PM EDT reply actions
My thoughts exactly. He seems to be the new Buddy (i.e. if a starting pitcher is taken out in the 3rd, they go to Meds…..but this doesn’t happen all that often).
Either way, I like Bennett alot, but if we keep going to him in key spots, we’re going to keep losing games. Simple as that.

Yeah I know this is gonna sound like blasphemy to some people, but I think that Bobby’s use of his bullpen has been one of the real weaknesses we’ve had in the last few years. He seems to have a couple of guys (see Bennet this year, Boyer in recent history) who he seems to go to no matter what, or as we’ve seen quite a lot lately, using closer/setup guys when it is not necessary. Another typical Bobby move is to become too focussed on matchups and bringing in a guy for one out. The result of this is that we often see our bullpen fall apart late in the season, or fall apart to injury as a result of this poor/over use. This hasn’t been a massive problem the last couple of seasons as by the late season we’ve had nothing really to play for, but if we were in a playoff race and if by some miraculous occurence we actually make the playoffs this would really come to bite us in the ass.
Rant over, I’m sure people will disagree and disagree vehemently.
by FromTheBellyOfWickman on Jun 21, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with every word.
And have been bitching and complaining about this all season, I’m sick of him bringing in 3 guys for 1 inning and using our 2 closers in 7 and 5 run leads back to back, it’s ridiculous and will definitely bite us in the ass toward the end of the season. Bobby’s obsession with Moylan and Bennett doesn’t make sense to me either, he needs to be using Acosta and Medlen respectively in place of them. I’m not saying Moylan’s bad, just he’s being way too overused since coming off surgery.

For some reason I feel more optimistic than I have at any other point in the season. The team battled back multiple times: JJ battled through without his best stuff, the rest of the team picked up without Chipper, and FUGA smiled. bad calls kinda fucked us over in the end.
Figure if we got the 3rd strike call when EoF was pitching, bravos up 5-4 bottom 9, Soriano comes into close the game and doesn’t give up a first pitch 300 ft homerun. mm wishful thinking.
On the other hand
we may have out-pitched, out-hit and out-played the Bo-Sox today, but they sure as heck out-defensed us. That catch by Youk on Yunel’s would-be double was insane.
And yes, the Porn-stache ump definately needs to lose his job after today’s performance. His strike zone was all over the place. It even worked out in our favor once or twice (that i remember).

My ideas to fix some things:
1. Send Bennett down to AAA and call up Mario Valdez. The dude has been money in AAA this year and deserves a shot. He cant do any worse than Bennett.
2. Either send Medlen back to AAA, or trade him. He does us no good pitching once every 10 days. Let the kid get some more innings under his belt @ Gwinett. His cleanup duty is rarely needed with the way our starters have been pitching and we’re wasting a spot in the bullpen.
3. Call up Boone Logan. The guy has been good at Gwinnett this season and we’ll definately need him. We dont wanna blow out EOF with a month to go. The guy is already up to 34 appearances. If Logan could serve as a LOOGY the next month or two when we play some strong offensive teams such as the Sox, Phillies, Yanks, Brewers, and Cardinals, he could really give O’Fharety some rest. Maybe if we had another LHP in the pen today, Gonzo could’ve been saved for the 10th.
4. Call up Burke, send down Diory. Diory could get some needed ABs at Gwinnett. The kid is only 24 so its not like we’re working on borrowed time here. Burke is a much better fielder and could be a nice utility guy for us until Infante gets back (Diory can pretty much only play SS)
What do you guys think? Oh, and getting rid of FYF is ALWAYS in my ideal future plans. I figure that kinda goes without saying.

oh sure
It’s just disconcerting that none of these things are going to get done in real life. I thought Bobby was nuts to keep playing GAnderson and, along with everybody else, I was proven wrong. He just needed time to come on. (although I don’t understand why he threw some of those balls to second tonite, instead of throwing them in the direction of home plate).
However, some of these changes need to be addressed, and I would be very surprised if any of them actually get done.

People just weren't willing to give Anderson any slack for the month behind he was in prep for the season because of his calf.
And I think a throw to the plate on the Ortiz run probably was unnecessary at best, and might have cost us a base at worst.

I do agree that we could use another lefty in the pen. i said that before the only thing is i wasnt to sure who to bring in because last i had check Boone Logan had started off pretty rough and i just kinda gave up on him however i do think we could benefit more from him being in the pen than Medlen/Bennett.
Medlen needs constant work so he can continue to develop and Bennett is Bennett. I dont forsee us having a problem with a starter not making it through at least 5-6 innings but knowing our luck as soon as we send down Medlen we will have someone get banged up in the 1st two innings that day and would have needed him

Another bad loss that shouldn't have been
Oh man, this is getting almost embrassing for the Bravos now, a series that they could have easily won and of course they let it slip right through their fingers. I mean Nick Green, please that in an of it self is a joke although it was Jeff Bennett whom will or needs to be gone with Campillo or Buddy is back from the DL stints. Just designate the guy for assignment nobody is going to pick him up anyway.
The season is pretty much all but over unless something crazy and or a miracle happens.
Answer is simple after watching the past couple of series no trade is needed b/c one year rental power hitter is not what we need. Just stay the course and if you want make minor deals but nothing major and wait until the offseason to dump KJ and Frenchy.
Just SUCKS ASS !!! WE HAVE THE PITCHING and great bullpen guys (7-9 innings only) and we can improve long relief with certain pitchers above returning. G. Anderson can only do some much at his age and Blanco needs to go back to AAA or release him.
Still would love to have Ludwick but that is not going to happen especially since the Cardinals are rolling and crushed the KC Royals today.
Oh well another year over before the all-star break. Typical Braves Season !!!

Astute commentary...
There is NOBODY in baseball who would want a reliever who can also start and has had a high ERA of 3.70 in the last three years.

Despite the lame finish
That wouldn’t have been a finish in any park other than Fenway, I enjoyed this game. The Braves did not roll over and die like they’ve done many times earlier this year, and against the vaunted mighty Boston Red Socks, they fought back and wiped out TWO separate leads. So often, we’ve seen them go down by one, and just fail to even get base runners in those instances, but yesterday they wiped out the deficits, and if not for the great diving stab by Youkilis, would’ve taken a lead.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Maybe Chipper getting ejected will be a turning point, like the Cubs last season went on a tear after Pinella got ejected (against the Braves). Granted, the Cubs didn’t do so well in the postseason, but I’m happy just getting there at this point. I’ll worry about advancing once we’re there…
