Schafer down, Blanco up
Jordan Schafer has been sent down to Gwinnett, and Gregor Blanco has been called up. Blanco is in the lineup tonight. Expect a drastically reworked lineup...hopefully

Wow
It was a much-needed move, but man, kinda took me by surprise…maybe we are trying to kill two birds with one stone here: get Logan some much needed confidence and fine tune his plate approach while also showcasing Greg White for other teams to see…

Time to change my signature again I guess
Logan Schafer for 2009 ROY!!! Go Wolverine!!! SNKT!
Call the Braves office and demand Anderson be stripped of #18. He doesn't deserve that hallowed number!

Wow, I’m surprised. Hopefully this is the best for everyone involved.

+1
I was really fine either way, but hopefully something clicks for Schafer in AAA and he can make an adjustment.

Thats the important part
how does he respond to it…Hopefully, he is mature enough to not take this as a knock against him, but rather a knock against whoever made the decision to call him up to begin the season.

when you're hitting .200 in your rookie season
I’m not sure even Frenchy would have taken it as a knock against him had he been in that scenario.

That's not really fair, either...
He won the job in ST. If Blanco or Anderson had clearly outplayed him, I’m sure they would have been glad to let the kid get some more seasoning.

did Blanco even participate in ST? I know Gorky’s didnt.
Saying he “won” that job is like taking first place in the special olympics. He was competing against Josh Anderson.
This is like the same situation as Medlen/Vasquez/Hanson. We think Hanson is ready just like we thought Schafer was ready. We traded Anderson and now it is biting us in the butt. Why? Because we banked on potential instead of wating until we knew for sure what we had.

Blanco was in the WBC and was not in ST until the very end.
by HEYJUDE on Jun 2, 2009 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He got into 11 games...
And managed a whopping .174 BA. Sorry, but I don’t think that merited a 25-man spot. Anderson was showing no patience whatsoever, and since we’d have used him as a leadoff man, that also would have been a bad thing.

How can you EVER "know what you have..."
If, as you suggest, young players should never be brought up from the minors because there’s someone “established” in their position in the bigs?

i understand your point but what your missing is that Hanson was in ST pitching like the rest of the rotation if not better.
by drumzalicious on Jun 3, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am not missing that
I watched him with great enthusiasm as he struck out other AAA players who were in ST while the rest of the baseball world was in the WBC. I watched EO’F pitch like crap in spring training only to subsequently watch him become one of our best pitchers out of the pen.
I watched Jordan Schafer (wow…been a long time since I used that first name…) tear it up in Spring Training with a great avg, obp and stolen bases. I watched Chipper suck in spring training.
I am well aware of how these guys pitched/played in spring training. That has nothing to do with how they will perform during the regular season at the MLB level.

About effing time. I hope Cox doesn’t lead off with Blanco though. Hopefully this signals more personnel changes to come in the OF.
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

FAILcoeur shouldn’t be in the line-up, but if he’s in there he should be batting 9th. Also, I like Kelly in the 6 hole, so throw Blanco in at the top and see if he can do it.

Why are we starting Prado against Wells?
If we’re just giving Kotchman a day off, I’d rather give Norton the start so he can get a few PA to work on his swing.

Like someone mentioned below, Kotchman might still be out because of that HBP on Sunday

The fact is
Shafer was killing the team. Far too many holes in the lineup to carry him. I think Bobby would have kept him playing if everyone else carried their weight.Blanco will be a a decent contributor I think. Didn’t he have a great preseason in the World Series thingy? I can remember someone singing his praises.

It’s a good move on the Braves part. Schafer wasn’t making the adjustments and even with his defense the Braves are a 0.500 team.
We aren’t going to be any worse with Blanco. Hopefully Schafer will work things out in AAA.

Wonder how far the Braves will take this.
Im still torn about GA. he has been hitting better lately but i still think we could do better.

Blanco can be serviciable enough. He can get on base and Schafer needed time in AAA to mature. Now if they get rid of Francouer and platoon Brandon Jones with Matt Diaz, it would be another step forward. And when Infante recovers, they can bench Anderson and start Infante.

Was fun watching the kid play, but hopefully he can go down there and get things worked out.
I don’t think this will hurt his confidence, because from what I have heard of Schafer, he is a good character guy, hard working, etc. Sounds like he is mature enough to understand that he’s not helping the team and now he has an opportunity to improve his game without hurting the big league team and tear it up in the bigs later this year or next year. Frankly, the only players who I think may have their confidence hurt by demotion are Francoeur-types, where their own numbers come before the team’s win total.
