Out of towner asks for advice, but with a slight twist
Hey guys, I will be in Atlanta this weekend and because the baseball gods are benevolent and my hostess is the bestess, I will be attending Sunday's tilt between the Brave and Brewers at Turner Field. Now, I ask of you - anything in particular at the Ted (or Atlanta in general) that is a "don't miss"?
I've been to Atlanta twice but not since 1998 or so. So basically never. What attractions (ballpark or otherwise) should I make sure to partake of? I've seen Stone Mountain and a trip to The Clermont Lounge is supposedly on the docket. Also she talked me into taking MARTA to the game against my better judgment, so that should be fun. The last time I used mass transit was when I rode a bus in Honolulu 13 years ago, and I was perfectly okay with that being the last time ever, but whatever.
In return I offer me linking to my write up at Red Reporter, complete with pics of me in the FAILCOEUR shirt at Turner Field if the damned thing gets here by Friday. It left San Jose last night at 10:00 PM via UPS ground so here's hoping.
Lastly, thanks so much for any advice you can give, I appreciate it!

Your hostess must not like you
Suggesting you take MARTA to Turner Field seems like an obvious reason why. Not only does it involve riding their classy trains, but then you have to transfer and hop onto a crowded bus for the final haul. It’s a good thing you’re coming for the day game, because it’s always scary fun de-boarding MARTA at a place called “Underground Atlanta” at night.
Turner Field itself has almost nothing of any note to offer. If you’re into history and the such, the Braves Hall of Fame Museum is okay, but probably doesn’t hold a candle to the Reds’. Food, there’s nothing really particularly unique, except what used to be Skip & Pete’s BBQ (wooden structure right inside of the CF gate), but it’s a tad on the pricey side in terms of ballpark food. The Coca-Cola pavilion high above LF offers some good views of the ballpark and the city, depending on which way you’re facing, and you’ll be standing next to a 55ft tall Chic-Fil-A cow. Enjoy the 60’ ft scoreboard that sometimes does show OBP, despite what Jeff Francoeur thinks. And tickets are really cheap at Turner Field, which is always a plus.
I’m sure I mentioned to you already that Sunday’s also Brian McCann Signature Bat Day – so get there early if you want a nice club to fight off the riff-raff on MARTA on the return haul.
Depending on how long you’re in Atlanta, that could limit what you could do, as so many things close on Sundays here. Lol’d at the Clermont Lounge, but I’m glad to know your trip won’t be boring. What really sucks about the city is how many cool places and clubs were closed down to make room for more gaudy condos. If you like Clermont, then you might be able to find things to do in areas like Little Five Points or the Highlands. If you’re into BBQ and/or Jazz music, a “must-visit” place I’d suggest is Fatt Matt’s BBQ. Not a single person who I’ve taken/directed there has regretted it.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
BBQ and Jazz you say?
Sounds like my kind of place. Duly noted.
The Clermont was “recommended” to me by two different people, claiming it was something I just had to experience firsthand. Then I saw this (Not Safe For Work) and I just had to go. I hear great things about a beer can trick or somesuch.

Fatt Matt’s rocks. I hear Daddy D’z has great food, also, but they don’t have the live jazz.
Some people swear by the ghetto burger: http://www.slashfood.com/2007/05/18/burger-of-the-day-ghetto-burger-at-anns-in-atlanta/, as opposed to the too-hyped Varsity.
(hey locals, Ann has put the place up for sale…)
If you’re in the Highlands as royhobbs suggests, Surin has decent thai; Osteria 832-good food, relaxed scene; Dark Horse Tavern…‘course after a night at the Clermont, you may just want to pack a cooler of water and bloody marys and just lay on the grass in Piedmont Park for a while.
Some music venues: The Masquerade, the Tabernacle, Smith’s Olde Bar, The Highlander…http://www.atlantamusicblog.com/news/atlanta-venues.html
You could take a trip in the glass elevator to the top of the Westin Peachtree Plaza and have a drink ($$) in the SunDial Bar while getting a rotating, 360 degree view of the city…http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/dining/attraction_detail.html?propertyID=1023&attractionId=1000046624
Oh no, not another geek :)
My Slashdot ID is embarrassingly low for how sparingly I’ve posted there.
"It seems as if every mistake I've ever made in life I've had an erection in one hand and a Bud Light in the other."
Also in the Highlands
Try and sneak into Tapa’s if you can. I once saw Erin Andrews there, and she’s gone on record when talking about Atlanta saying that’s her favorite place to eat.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
No more Miss Ann ?!
Lawdy, that sucks goats. At least I’ll be able to say that I took on and successfully defeated the Ghetto Burger, AND didn’t get thrown out for looking higher than the floor.

Or you could park and walk, but...
WITH THE ECO- BEING THE WAY THAT IT IS WE WOULD THINK & HOPE THE LEAGUE WOULD SO SOME FAN APPREICATION BY AT LEAST PROVIDING TRANSPORT TO THE GAME… ME AND 20 OTHER GUYS HAVE TO PARK AMOST 5 BLOCKS TO GET TO A GAME….
Cheetah, and Pink Pony.
But yeah, pretty much what hobbs said. When you get off the train at 5 points, look for “Braves Shuttle”. It’ll take you through the underground shopping area. Stay straight, once you get past the stands of jewelry/airbrush/sunglass/cellphone/Obama t shirts, the shuttle is outside at the end. its free if you have a ticket for the train, which you should. it drops you off after the game above ground, so you won’t go back through Underground on the way back.

I actually visited Underground the last time I was there
I want to say I had fondue there or somewhere nearby.
"It seems as if every mistake I've ever made in life I've had an erection in one hand and a Bud Light in the other."
Mulligan stew and barrel fire cooking is not fondue. J/k.
If there is a fondue joint anywhere within the vicinity of Underground, I’m amazed, or I avoid the place more fervently than I thought.

Dante’s (Down the Hatch) was still open in Underground back then. Can’t think of anywhere else it could be.
I think that was the place

Clermont Lounge
… is where strippers go to die. They only serve beer in "canned’ form, and the strippers dance on a makeshift bar/liquor cabinet-looking stage. But yeah, it’s worth the trip … even if you vomit on a scantily clad old chick.
Other than that, I would avoid Underground (it isn’t what it used to be), hit up some of the fine dining establishments (Majestics/Gladys Knight Chicken and Waffles/Fellini’s/The Varsity), hit the bars (I recommend The Highlands [it’s a neighborhood]), and maybe see if there are any festivals, etc. going on (there usually are).
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.
But it's trashy, in an entertaining way
Best part is, Fellini’s Pizza is within walking distance to Clermont. But yeah, the Highlands is probably my favorite place in the city to pubcrawl.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Yup ...
not to mention the fact that Fellini’s serves the best calzone I’ve ever eaten.

Do the Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola if you’re into those types of things. The Aquarium is top notch(if you like aquariums) and the World of Coca-Cola is pretty neat.
Interesting side note…when my wife and I took my kids to Atlanta back in April, we stayed at the Microtel right by the Pink Pony. I did not find myself inside the Pony however(although sadly I have in years past).

I see the advice part, but what was the twist?
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

No Marta just pay ten bucks, park at the holiday inn down the street from the stadium get drunk in the parking deck. Watch baseball. Eat hot dogs.
last time
Last time I was up in Atlanta we caught a Braves game (against the Mets – Pedro Martinez vs John Smoltz…Braves lost) and went to the aquarium. The aquarium is really awesome.
As a fellow ATL tourist...
I went down last summer and did a tourist-y ATL weekend with the mama. We were there for the unveiling of the Chik-Fil-A cow and went to the World of Coke, the Aquarium, the Cyclorama, and the High. For me, I thought the Aquarium was overrated. The one in Chattanooga is just as good if not better, and certainly cheaper. The Cyclorama was very cool, if you’re into history. Coke was interesting, I guess, but nothing special or irreplaceable in terms of memories. The High had lots of neat stuff to look at even if you’re not an art person (and I’m not.)

When I was in Atlanta last summer, I only left my hotel room to go to Turner Field…and I was staying right across the street from Lenox Mall.
I am a boring dork.

The best part was that bigjoe’s TC posting activity, despite being 800 miles away from home was hardly different than when he was at home. I know Atlanta doesn’t offer a ton of things to do, but come on now – I assumed it was a case of Scrantonian-in-the-big-city-itis.

lol
“Mall” sounds too “urban”
I like how “square,” “galleria” and especially now “station” have displaced the term “mall.”

Also
“Place.”
But see Cumberland Mall. I mean, if Cumberland Mall even still exists. Does Cumberland Mall still exist?
Yeah
But they’re really trying to merge it with Cobb Galleria, with a bigass bridge across the multi-lane road.

MARTA is 100% terrible unless you’re homeless, you like risking your life, or are interested in slinging come rocks to the homeboys… You gotta be kidding me…

When I was 12, a grown man tried to fight me on the MARTA. Of course, when I was 12, I was 6 feet tall and would have kicked his ass, but I felt sorry for him and told him to go away.
I know that sounds like bullshit, but it’s the truth. I was way more badass when I was 12. I’m a poof now.

If you could fight any president, who would you fight?
I’d fight Lincoln. Tall guys have reach, and they fight until they’re hamburger.

Great suggestions guys/gals, thank you all
Also, my shirt has an expected delivery date of Friday so it looks like we’re in business there too. Pics/story to follow next week when I recover from the weekend. :)
