Bobby Cox isn't the only one who has been rubbed the wrong way by Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar's attention to style over detail lately.
"Somebody better remind him he's Yunel Escobar, not Gloria Estefan," said one scout. "There ain't no show going on. This is baseball. Let's play."
ESPN's Jayson Stark passes along a quote
We'll get to see if, over the next few weeks, Yunel gets the message.

Those damn frosted tips!
or whatever you call his hair…
A man walks into a meat shoppe and goes to the counter. The cashier asks, "Thinking about buying some meat?". The man replied, "No, I'm going to buy meat, I was thinking about punanny."
Those fugly frosted tips makes him look like a gay premadonnas.

Glad that it's a quote from a scout
And not a teammate. Escobar will learn. He’s stubborn and bull-headed, but he loves baseball so much, he’ll adapt to not be such a screw-up rather than not play.
I’ve said it a lot, but I love the way he plays. Bad baserunning and decisions can be fixed, but swagger and style of how he plays can’t be taken away from him, no matter how hard others might try. I love the bat flips and the way he has that celebratory glove slap/kick when he rockets down a base-runner.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Did they tell him he can’t jump in the on-deck circle anymore?

That’s what I thought, but I didn’t know if it was a self imposed jumping ban, or if the coaches made him stop.

Yunel hasn't been show-boating of late. He's starting to play hard again.

if Jeff did it, nobody would say anything
Aside from Bobby and a few teammates not liking him, it’s not clear to me that there is any real problem with Escobar. He’s made a few baserunning blunders and a few bad defensive plays. So have many other players and yet they haven’t been called out publicly. Meanwhile he’s been very solid with the bat. On the list of problems with this team that is keeping it from being in contention, Escobar is near the bottom if he’s even on the list at all. The lack of offense from the corner outfielders and starting 2nd baseman are far more serious problems for the Braves. I’d like to see those very real problems addressed before the team starts worrying about Escobar’s bat flinging and other minor issues.
Coaches always say...
“If you’re going to make a mistake, make it an effort mistake.” Escobar has made several of the non-effort variety.

i completely disagree with this statement...
when has one of esocbar’s mental lapses been of the non-effort variety. the kid plays hard.but is just dumb. for the most part, he’s “street baseball” smart, but not professional baseball smart.
The brain-dead play against the Pirates when he sat on the ball while they scored a run?

He was blocked by an umpire, and His team mates are also at fault for not yelling runner when he took off from third. But yeah Blame Esco. He is not our problem.

The ball was only in one player's hand that play.

how is that...
non-effort? it’s stupid, but it’s not like he wasnt trying. there’s a big difference.
Some people just dont like Yunel ryan c and will find almost anything to say bad about him. They are blind if they can’t see that he plays hard and is one of the top short stops in the league. He has come through in clutch situations all season and his arm is amazing. So what he made a bad play. No one is talking about the ball that went right in between Chippers legs in the 9th inning that almost cost us a game, or that frechy has been playing better than him in the last three games. My point is every player makes mistakes, and this whole team is hard to watch. And Yunel is one of the bright spots so talk about some one who deserves to be trashed.

And I like the guy just fine...
He’s just been doing a bunch of dumb shit lately.

When you eat a ball while a run is being scored because you're not paying attention...
That’s non-effort.

I’m pretty sure eating the ball is against MLB rules. But to be sure, let’s ask Mo Vaughn.

He needs to grow mentally if he wants to play in the bigs
I was at the game on Tuesday and saw him lose his focus to a bunch of drunk Red’s fans who were yelling during his at bats. You could easily tell that Escobar was flustered and ended up striking out. Before walking to the dugout he actually stared up at the guys who were yelling.
Note: the long rain delay drove a lot of people away so it was relatively quiet and the drunk guys were about 25 rows up behind home plate.
The thing is...
Outside of McCann and Chipper, Yunel is the best baseball player we have. The difference between his situation and Andruw, is that the Braves were a winning team. The season will be over for the Braves without him. The Braves have no short or long term solutions at this position. I keep looking for Bobby’s managerial genius in dealing with his stylish play and lack of focus.Whenever they show him in the dugout he seems to be alone, and the high fives he gets and gives appear perfunctory.

I hate to see him alone in the dugout all the time as well.
Even Prado, the social butterfly, doesn’t sit with him. But when the two are on the field, they are all smiles.
Yunel is a……..unique guy, though. He seems to just do his own thing. Maybe this doesn’t even phase him.

When I was in Baltimore the other day Escobar and Prado were hanging out a good while during BP and looked like they were having a lot of fun.

I’ve always thought that Escobar thought he was better than he actually is. He hasn’t done nearly enough to act like that. I like the guy and think that he could someday be one of the best SS in the NL but he isn’t there yet.
hes certainly in the top 5 right now

I think he’s a little overrated. His defense is above average but far from great. He is limited in where he can hit in the order because he has limited power and not much speed. Plus he’s still not mature enough yet. Come on the guys 26 years old that argument doesn’t work anymore. If he was 22 or 23 I wouldn’t mind him making mental errors but being 26 he’s got to figure it out.
Although he does have limited professional experience compared to most of that age, to be fair.
Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.
by MichaelProcton on Jun 19, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions
True
he has only been a professional since 2005 but he was playing in Cuba before that. He should be more mature as a person though and not just a baseball player. He’s 26 its time to grow up and take his game to the next level.
What are you talking about how is he immature. He is one of the best players he makes errors like every one else. You act like you know him personally. " He needs to grow" “He is overrated” He is one of our best players say that.
Baseball is my life
He often acts like a whiny little baby when things don't go his way, and occasionally acts like a douche when things do.
Those aren’t professional behaviors. Did you like it when Justin Upton was showboating against us? David Ross sure didn’t.

He’s at best 4th in the NL behind Hanley, Reyes, and Rollins (although frankly, I might prefer Tulo and Stephen Drew too.
4th out of 16 isn’t exactly the cat’s meow.
Except he’s probably the third best hitter on this team right now.

Whutsya point?

That it’s kind of goofy to point out where he stands in your NL SS power rankings (in an effort to marginalize his value) when he’s one of the best hitters on your team and you have absolutely no viable replacement for him.
by get swoll yunel on Jun 19, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes...
Because, you know, I’ve said that he’s a terrible hitter and advocated he be replaced and stuff

Goofy
I was responding to someone who said Yunel was “certainly” in the Top 5 right now.
But since we’re on the topic of all things goofy, you know something else that’s goofy? Ignoring defense when evaluating players.
I don’t recall ever ignoring his defense. UZR is not the end all be all defensive metric (and defensive metrics in general aren’t the end all be all for rating defense, as far as I’m concerned).
I recall his +/- being fantastic last season.
