Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/16

Gwinnett @ Indianapolis - Postponed

Mississippi - Off

Lynchburg 0, Myrtle Beach 1 - Game 1 - 7 Innings

  • E. Cordier 7IP 4H 0R 5BB 3K

All but two guys in the Pelicans lineup had a hit, but no one had more than one, but Eric Cordier didn't need much help tonight. Is Cordier still a prospect? Well he has a good arm, but he still hasn't gotten his control back since coming back from Tommy John surgery. At 23 years old he needs to prove this year that he can pitch above A ball for me to really consider him part of the future. But at this point he is in the same boat that Jeff Locke was, seemingly blocked in front and pushed from behind.

Lynchburg 10, Myrtle Beach 3 - Game 2 -  7 Innings

  • F. Freeman 2-3 2 HR(6)
  • C. Ludahl 1-3 HR(1)

The pitching in this game was attrocious but good ol' Frederick Freeman got back on his power horse. Freddie hasn't been at all bad this season but it was going on over a month and a half since he last went yard and I was starting to wonder what was up. Also one of his homers came against a left hander which is significant because Freddie struggles a little against LHP. This excites me when not much going on in the minors excites me right now. Still no Heyward.

Savannah 6, Rome 3

  • C. Culver 2-4 2B, RBI, K
  • B. DeVall 6IP 6H 5R 3BB 5K

This was really Brett DeVall's first bad start of the season. He just made a couple of bad mistakes by giving up two 2 Run homers in the 4th and 5th innings. They are the first two he has given up this seaosn so I will let it slide. But next time there will be hell to pay.

DeVall is one of my favorite prospects at Rome. He gave up 5 ER tonight and his ERA is still only 2.77. That’s pretty dang good.

Everyone has such high hopes for Cordier, but I have to wonder what is future is. Maybe he would be healthier in a bullpen role. Who knows? I will say this, that Lynchburg team is pretty good and they’re in first place.

It was good to see Freeman hit 2 homeruns today, too. I find it interesting that he was hitting 2nd in both games today…I wonder what that’s all about.

I think it was more about getting someone else farther down in the lineup who can hit. i think they had fisher down there splitting up Gress, Kennelly and other guy who is hitting .100 something.

When I saw MB earlier in the year, I watched Cordier throw a bullpen session. I’ve never seen a guy look worse in a regular old throwing session. He had no control and he injured his catcher. Obviously, there’s something there with his arm, but I really have to wonder if he can harness it.

Oh, and I think something is terribly wrong with Cody Johnson…he doesn’t have any extra-base hits in his last nine games!? What’s going on?!

I’d be interested in knowing if he’s been cutting down on his strikeouts. That might be the cause of his lack of power. Anybody have any clues? Just a regular drought?

he has been walking more but he is still striking out. maybe not quite as much, but still at least 1 per game.

Where is Heyward

What is going on with Jason Heyward? He has been out for almost a month?

The baseball gods...

are just trying to give the rest of the Carolina league some breathing room so that when Heyward comes back, he won’t make them all look like 5 year olds.

Planning to go see Diamond pitch tonight in Chattanooga…

And DeVall is still awesome, but last night is going to make winning that SAL ERA crown a bit trickier.

Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur

A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
