Braves sign LHP John Halama to minor league contract

The Atlanta Braves have signed left-handed starting pitcher John Halama to a minor league contract. Halama was pitching for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League. Halama, 37, has nine seasons of major league expreience, mostly with Seattle. He was 8-and-1 with a 2.05 ERA in nine starts this year.

His role with the Braves organization will likely be to fill in as a starter for the depleted triple-A starting pitching ranks, and as emergency starting pitching depth for the major league club.

Without knowing much about how he actually pitches or his level of competition...

I like his lines from this year in the Atlantic. He’s pitched 4 CGs (although 3 were of the 7-inning doubleheader variety), and he started out 7-0.

Also of note is that Matt DeSalvo, who was in our organization last year) got signed off this same team by the Rays.

Although he was pitching about as well in the Atlantic league last year and didn't pitch particularly well for AAA Buffalo

Pitching well in the Atlantic League is big, cause all the parks are banboxes, especially the one in SMD. Anyway, I remember getting his autograph 3 years ago with the Nationals and thinking he was washed up then.
