Game 59 Recap: Pirates 3, Braves 1

Jeeeeeezzz! Our offense still sucks. Even on a day with Jeff Francoeur gets two hits, a walk, a stolen base, and an RBI, we can't even muster more than one run. We got a fantastic pitching performance from Javier Vazquez -- 2 hits and 12 strikeouts over 8 innings. Rafael Soriano, pitching in his fifth inning (fourth appearance) in the last five days, didn't have his best stuff and gave up the winning run in the ninth, but with that kind of overuse who can blame him.

Something has got to change with this offense... it's making me ill.

Rookie Barbaro Canizares, 29-year old rookie Barbaro Canizares, made his major league debut and got his first major league hit while batting cleanup and playing first base.

We just need Kotchman back, Kelly to get hot, and a new RF. It’s not that daunting.

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

Agree...

I can see the first two happening….the third, well, we can hope, can’t we?

well the 1st one is happening for sure. 2nd one i give about a 25% chance and the 3rd…uhh 40% chance maybe?

P.s. i didnt see the game today but did Diaz and FYF both have a steal or two?

Wow...

So you think, then, that they’ll give up on Kelly before FYF?

problem...

if we trade our RF we would still have a gap in LF unless its someone with power. Frank is still 25, I say we go out and get a power bat in LF…..We cant win with this offense, its to inconsistent. Keep Frank and trade for a LF forKJ, he sucks and put Prado on 2nd when he gets back……

Do you really, really and truly...

think Kelly is worse than Francouer?

Probably Soriano needed a day off although it wasn’t like Laroche crushed that ball (which was almost surely ball 4 if he hadn’t swung). But these kind of losses happen when you don’t score many runs.

How many consecutive months will Jeff Francoeur get to be an everyday outfielder for the Braves while turning in an OPS below .600? The only thing saving Kelly Johnson from fans’ wrath is that Francoeur and Anderson are so much worse. Wren needs to hurry up and clean house of all the non-performing hitters.

It’s probably not a bad idea to chalk this season as a transition year. With all the pitching we have all we need are a couple of bats. Perhaps we’ll trade an arm for bat before the season is over.

you call it quits or declare it a “transition year” after 59 games? We arent the Washington Nationals here..we have a fantastic ERA which will only get lower as Hanson progresses. We’re yet to see our lineup at full strength (Kotch and McLouth havent played together yet, plus Infante will be back within a month). Not to mention we have many pieces and possibilities to make a trade to improve ourselves too. No way we call it quits.

in it to win it

Yeah we need to go for it this year. Next year we won’t have Soriano and Gonzalez and Lowe and Chipper won’t be any younger, so this is the year to make our move. Despite their mediocre play, the Braves are only 3 games out of the wild card. That’s easily doable in 103 games.

"We arent the Washington Nationals"

We also aren’t the Phillies.

Well

since 2007 this offense has been inconsistent like this. Im pretty much used to this by now thats why i would never say before ANY series against ANY team that we will sweep or even win the series against them because you just never know whith this team.

I will say this...

Bobby wouldn’t pitch Raffy if he had said he couldn’t go.

I mean we have a couple of other arms that could have been used. its just sad when the Manager cant trust them to be consistent and not give up a run. ( Acosta, Bennett )

As much as i doubt it will happen i would love for the Braves to be able to retain both Soriano and Gonzo. At the least Soriano

by drumzalicious on Jun 12, 2009 1:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When is he better

Is Soriano better when it is a save situation…hey stat people gander that question….It would be interesting to know his performances coming in when it is tied in the nineth vs. Gonzo…which in reality would only be a hold?

by bravestatoo on Jun 12, 2009 2:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually, it wouldn't be.

All holds are just save situations that come before the end of the game.

Remember, kids...don't ever let facts get in the way of your argument.

by MichaelProcton on Jun 12, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And since it was a tie game, it was neither a save nor hold situation.

for anyone wondering about Vazquez being taken out
"They told me, you’re coming out after the eighth — good game. That’s it," said Vazquez, who wasn’t complaining, just answering a question about whether he could have continued.

"I feel strong enough to finish some games," he said. "I guess it’s part of the game now. I’ve always been against pitch counts. I don’t know who invented the phrase, ‘If you throw 100 pitches you can’t pitch anymore.’

He added: "I felt good. What can I say? It’s part of the game."

I’d like to be able to second guess Bobby, but I would have done the exact same thing, Javy for 8 and let Soriano hold them off and hope to score in the 9th.

by MatM on Jun 12, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV is right. Now a days MGMT and coaches are babying this pitchers becuase of there salary. It’s unfortunate that there’s pitchers out there that can still get it done and becuase of there" pitch count" have to be taken out of a game that he was dominating. 12k’s and one run? Are you kidding me? Come on Bobby and you put in Soriano who’s pitched on 4 straight games and in one of those 2 innings?

Its also sad to say that for the most part alot of our pitchers are getting robbed for there hard earned wins. Lowe should of at least have 9 , jurrgens as well, JV maybe 6 or 7, Kawakami maybe 5. Wren we cant win with this offense. Trade KJ and some prospects for a LF.

Wondering: What if we spent an extra $10million for Adam Dunn where would the braves be right now?

by AlRoBraves95 on Jun 12, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Vazquez could just as easily blown up in the 9th himself.

I don’t wont to throw in the towel right now, no way, but I think if were not within 5 or 6 games by the trade deadline, we should trade Javy. If he continues on this pace, we’ll be able to get a king’s ransom for him and free up a spot in the rotation for Medlen. And if Hudson is ready to go, putting KK on the block might not be a bad idea either.

by MatM on Jun 12, 2009 10:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i guess a lot of it’s gonna have to do with how the phils and mets play over the next few weeks, and whether we get stomped into the ground by the yanks, sox, etc
