Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 6/10
Slow night in the minors. Both Gwinnett (33-27 and 4.5 games out in 3rd) and Mississippi (30-30 and 9games out in 3rd) were off today and the other teams lost.
Kinston 4, Myrtle Beach 1
- D. Linares 2-4 RBI, K
- C. Johnson 0-2 2BB, 2K
- J. Ortegano 6IP 3H 0R 0BB 6K
Well Ortegano pitched great in this one only to have the bullpen blow it. MIchael Broadway might be the only bad reliever in the system now as he sports an 0-5 record (as a reliever mind you) and a 7 something ERA. An odd occurence in the last few games is Cody Johnson has 10 walks in his last 5 games but only 1 home run this month. Currently Myrtle Beach is 21-36 and 10 games out of first place in the division.
Rome 3, Savannah 4
- J. Santamaria 2-4 CS(4)
- C. Culver 1-4 HR2), 2K
- D. Delgado 4IP 4H 1R 2BB 3K
Dimaster Delgado came out and pitched another good game. He hasn't made it past the 5th yeat in either start, but I am sure he is on a strict pitch count right now. He is a guy we will have to keep an eye on. Calvin Culver is the most intriguing position player to keep an eye for Rome. He has started pretty well and is showing some extra base power and doesn't K much. Like a lot of toolsy guys though he doesn't walk much yet, but he has time to refine that. Rome is 32-27 and 3 games out and in 3rd place.

There are only 8 teams in the Carolina League, so I’m sure by now everyone has been victimized by Cody Johnson. I’m betting the walks are a product of being heavily pitched around and it’s nice to see that he doesn’t seem to be chasing bad pitches.

I’m very happy that he is taking more walks as that is more important to his development than how many HR he can hit. Its not going to matter in the bigs if you have huge power if you K 200 times and walk only 20 times. But when you walk 100-120 a year to combat the high K rate you can be a major league player.
The power is obviously there so I’m just glad he is improving on other, just as important parts of hitting.
My argument would be that if you hit 40-50 homers a year in the majors, they’re going to walk you 100-120 times, there’s just no getting around it.

There are guys who wouldn't let that happen.
Scott McClain, affiliated minor league HR record-holder, is one of those. Former Braves farmhand Mike Hessman is another. Nelson Cruz never took a lot of walks, etc., etc.

This isn’t what we were talking about, but why are they counting McClain’s homers in Japan as minor league home runs? Japan isn’t the minor leagues. He’s only got 292 in affiliated minor league ball. Hessman has 297 in affiliated minor league ball, and he’s 6 years younger. And McClain has played 5 seasons and is working on a 6th in the Pacific Coast League, which is much easier to hit homers in. He’s not even in the same power class as Hessman.

Aha...
So Hessman passed him. And I actually did misread your statement. Thought you said minors when you said majors.

It’s cool, you still made a vaild point about those guys not being able to take walks. I’d argue that the minors is a bit different, where a team might let a pitcher face a masher and try to get the better of him for a learning experience and to test his mettle, but sometimes they do pitch around guys like in the bigs. Looking at some of those numbers, McClain and Hessman were typically in the 60s and low 70s for walks, so even taking that into account, they probably still wouldn’t be hitting the 100s in walks, so yeah, your point is still very valid.

You still have to be patient enough to accept your free pass though.
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
Yeah, kind of the point I was making.

Don’t really think you can attribute it to that since CoJo was never really hitting ahead of Heyward to begin with. There’s not much dangerous behind CoJo now, and there wasn’t with Heyward in the lineup either.

Yeah, but there's less likely to be men on base who would keep them away from pitching around him.
