Open Thread 6/10: Pirates at Braves
Pittsburgh Pirates at Atlanta Braves, Jun 10, 2009 7:10 PM EDT
Charlie Morton takes the mound... for the Pirates, not the Braves. Our recently traded pitcher will face his old mates and Jair Jurrjens, who will toe the mound for Atlanta. As I said earlier today, I wish Charlie all the best... after tonight's game.

he was talking about the david wells trade from boston to san diego for some catcher. The catcher had hit a HR off Phil Hughes in the Futures all-star game, and Sutcliff said that that HR was the reason they traded wells for the C. If Bobby would take him out right now, I bet that would be a wake up call for him and all the others!!!
I wish he would
Bobby needs to send him a message to take his head outta his ass because this is not an isolated incidence.
What did Esco do?
I’m out of town and all I have is ESPN Gamecast that said Laroche reached on an infield single.
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
I hate Yunel Escobar
He is the laziest SOB I’ve seen in a while. It seems like he imposes a stupid play quota on himself that he needs to fill every game.
I disagree
GA is a combination of slow and lazy that makes him look lazier but Yunel makes 10 times the lazy plays that GA does.
yeah, but
How much of his benefit does he completely negate with his ridiculous fielding, baserunning, etc. mistakes?
It’s almost like he helps us get a run just to take it back! It’s frustrating to watch day after day.
He doesn't take a day off
from screwing up. He’s definitely not a guy you’d describe as having high baseball IQ.
Holy Crap
I just got back in from work and finally saw our lineup. Why in the hell are the ghosts of FUGA, Norton, and FYF batting back to back to back???
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
I don't understand the continued allegiance to Norton
If Schafer can be sent down to work on his swing – why can’t Norton?
Surely there’s a guy in the minors who can be a PH for us off the bench who would hit better than .100
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
Can't send Norton down
Have to designate for assignment. No options.
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
Bobby loves his platoons
SO WHY CAN’T HE DO IT WITH GA AND FRANCOEUR? Diaz should be playing every day, I don’t give a shit if he moves in between left and right when he’s playing, just put him in the lineup every day. Give me a break.
Here's an idea -
Let’s hit ‘em where they ain’t
"Well behaved women rarely make history" ~ Laurel Ulrich
Diaz sighting!
It’s only seven innings too late and he’s not playing RF so bad timing.
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
When we play at an AL team in interleague
We should have the DH hit for one of the corner outfielders and let our pitchers hit
I think we should have TP shag some fly balls
Cuz he can damn well hit better than the garbage we’re getting
Bennett in
this should at least be interesting…

someone with way more knowledge than me, please explain
Why is Matt Diaz considered bench/platoon/PH material only? Isn’t he a top 5 batter for the braves? I’ve never understood why he’s an afterthought, especially with FYF struggling.

I don't buy into defensive metrics
for just this reason. Watching him, it’s been incredibly obvious that his defense has been much, much better recently.
yeah, I didn’t understand that acquisition. I thought Matt had a chance to become a starter

This game is an example of how important SPEED is.
Their fielders get to balls hit in the far recesses of the outfield, their runners steal, on plays they keep running and make the defense make the play. No gifts to the other teams because of a lack of speed.
However we on the other hand…..

id rather have javy v. bat
he had a double a while ago vs the phillies. thats 1 extra base hit more than Norton has

Yeah
His BA is hovering around Corky Miller levels. That’s one thing that drives me up the wall with Bobby is his loyalty to guys even when they are not producing. We could have had Sammons backing up all last year if all we were going to get out of the backup catcher’s spot was an average barely over .100 and saved a ton of money.

Changes as of this coming friday

Is it hate to recognize that a guy is an old 36, never been a great defensive player, and was never really a great hitter? He was average over the course of his career, and he’s certainly not at his best.
Is it hate to recognize that he’s about a 2% better hitter this eyar than Raul Mondesi was for us, and not as good an outfielder?
This pains…absolutely PAINS me to admit…but the right fielder should be brought out to pasture before Anderson. WINCE
I don’t see how the only option for that guy is to completely release him. I have a feeling that at this point, the only reason he isn’t in AA is because the Braves are afraid of ruining his trade value. And the verbal explosion he’d fire off as a result of his well-earned demotion would only hurt him more. Inexplicably, there’s people interested in trading for him, so the Braves are trying to do something with him before his value goes in the basement.
I don’t think his value can get much lower than it really is, though…he’s got 2 XBH over the last MONTH. The only minor positive is that he’s walked more than he’s struck out so far after a 1:23 slide in May…but seriously, if THE NEW STANCE does nothing but cut strikeouts…and doesn’t improve his actual HITTING…whats the use?
I love that I can make a comparison between him and Raul Mondesi. When my buddy sent me a text telling me we’d acquired GA, my text message response was, verbatim, “Remember when we signed Raul Mondesi?”
hahahhahahahah….wow.

Ross has the best record against Capps – why wasn’t he at bat instead of Norton?

It sucks that JJ gets the loss here…this L should go to Yunel.

JJ has gotten 1 run of support in his last 2 starts
How sad

Norton’s BABIP is like…reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally low. But his LD%? Yeah…its within a percent of the right fielder’s walk rate. Thats embarrassing. Its time to cut him loose.
Uhm, he’s not the MOST unlucky guy in the MLB, but his predicted BABIP is like .340 and his BABIP is .270. So, there’s some bad luck definitely in there somewhere.
What’s disturbing is that his walk rate has dropped off so much since 2007. It’s WELL below his career average this year. He’s always shown LESS patience out of the leadoff spot, which seems crazy, but I can find numbers to back it up.
I’ll admit I’m not a big stat guy and watch games more with what I see and how I feel….and when KJ is batting I have little to no confidence he’s going to do anything positive
Cockchafer
Just to put it out there, here’s what you can expect any time KJ is up to bat, based on his year to date.
He’ll draw a walk in 7.3% of his Plate Appearances (this is one number that disturbs me). He’s going to strike out 17.4% of the time. That means, he’ll make contact in 82.6% of his ABs.
22.2% of the times he makes contact, he’ll hit a line drive. 35.3% of those are ground balls. The remaining 42.5% are fly balls. That’s a bit high for a guy like Kelly who has decent speed and doesn’t have a high HR rate-that’s where a lot of his easy outs are coming from. BABIP is .270.
For comparisons, Chipper Jones
K-rate : 17.4%
BB-rate: 17.4%
LD-rate: 23.9%
BABIP: .368
and Brian McCann
K-rate: 12.8%
BB-rate: 13.1%
LD-Rate: 21.9%
BABIP: .318
Does anybody know if the team fines players for mistakes?
I know a number of pro sports teams do this and I would love to see it if it isn’t happening already. How much you guys wanna bet that Yunel, Frenchy, and GA would start putting some more effort in if their pockets took a pounding every time they f’d up
If my father were running the Braves…good god. Every time I watch a game with that man, he shouts FINE EM every time something stupid/lazy happens.
It's just amazing
If these guys are being paid six and seven figures to play ball, they damn well better show some effort. If a normal person screws up, they get fired, these guys better at least be getting fined a couple grand.
KJ made a nice play to save a ball from getting into the OF and flipped it to Yunel
and it looked like the runner didn’t see it and kept going around third. Easy out…. if your SS isn’t completely off in la-la land and just standing there looking off into space while the play is still going on.
He held the ball while the runner ran past 3rd and went to home. a play where he could have easily threw him out if he was paying attention and had been more aware of the runner
