Open Thread 5/7: Braves at Marlins

Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins, May 7, 2009 12:10 PM EDT

Nothing like a nooner. Players love playing afternoon games, and fans love not being able to watch them because they're at work. I excited because maybe Bobby will be forced to play Clint Sammons again -- three weeks in the majors and he's gotten into 3 games, 5 at-bats.

Next Game

Atlanta Braves
@ Florida Marlins

Thursday, May 7, 2009, 12:10 PM EDT
Dolphin Stadium

Jair Jurrjens vs Anibal Sanchez

Partly cloudy. Game time temperature around 85.

Slightly off topic, but it doesn't deserve a full fanpost right now

Anyone have any projections on when we are going to be seeing Hanson (and Medlen at this rate)? Think we are going to wait for a serious injury?

It has got be getting goddamned hard to keep him down there. Seriously nothing left to prove outside of the bigs.

by Sid Bream's Moustache on May 7, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

Hanson – Depending on how Kawakami and Reyes progress from here, but I’d say no ealier than June
Medlen – Next season, or when the rosters expand.

by justincredubil02 on May 7, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

People hate the arbitration clock argument, so I’ll try another one: what are we going to do with Parr / Morton / Jo-Jo? Ideal long term solution is to trade Jo-Jo and other passable starters for better bats, but you don’t increase their trade value by sending them up and down all the time. You have to hope that they put together a few good starts, then sell high while you can. After you’ve made the space, then Jesus and Medlen get their shot to come up.

Also, I don’t think the Braves are ready to pull the plug on their 23M man from Japan to make room for Medlen / Hanson. So at best, we’ll see one of them.

Finally, while they both have been great in April, I say there’s nothing wrong with getting more experience under the belt. Pitching every 5th day for a month vs. a whole season is two different things. Lets not declare them our #1 and #2 starters just yet.

by fphjr01 on May 7, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Several factors

1. How is Hanson actually doing in AAA? Right now, he’s doing well enough for me to think that he’ll get his definite call up later this year, no sooner than June 1, but has shown a few innings where if he’s not striking out the world, could prove vulnerable.

2. How Jo-Jo Reyes holds up. If Jo-Jo is pitching well, and throwing strikes, there’s no reason to demote him in favor of Hanson. Lowe, Vazquez, Jurrjens, and even Kawakami are likely going to be staying, barring any injuries or freak lapses in pitching capability.

3. The logjam. Tom Glavine is slowly on his way to coming back. Bobby Cox was quoted “he was lights out” (he uses that line to describe ALL his pitchers, regardless of true or not). Whether he deserves it or not, he’s going to take that 5th spot, not only pushing back the more qualified Jo-Jo, but also Hanson.

At this point, trades could occur, but again, barring injuries, it’s not likely we’ll see Hanson until September, or someone gets hurt or becomes ineffective.

by Sid Bream's Moustache on May 7, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

At least fantasize for June 1. Even in fantasy world, the Braves wouldn’t dare call up early and turn on that Arb clock.

If you haven’t noticed the Braves are a little too systematically efficient, even at the cost of the regular squad’s record at times.

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

Texas gave him a better shot of actual major league playing time

But when you look at it, they had more of logjam in the outfield than we did.

Hamilton, Byrd, Murphy, Cruz were all guaranteed to get playing time. We actually weren’t sure who the centerfielder was going to be coming into camp.

They have a DH slot too. When I say Texas gave him a better shot of actual playing time, I mean the organization itself offered him a better chance of playing time than the Brave organization did (as opposed to the availability of roster slots).

Just looking at his numbers. Small sample size, etc. but that 1.173 OPS is just a little sick.

From Poz’s latest blog…

Say, for instance, you have the not-evil-but-certainly-misguided Professor Francoeur* roaming the countryside with his .307 on-base percentage and using his anti-walk machine to remove on-base percentage from every scoreboard in America.

*Francoeur’s quote — "If on-base percentage is so important, then why don’t they put it up on the scoreboard?" — is making the Internet rounds now. My sense is that Francoeur was saying it as more of joke — I know some people are hammering him about it, but I think it’s mostly just amusing. Still, it should be noted that on-base percentage does seem to be on many scoreboards at ballparks I go to. It is in Kansas City, for sure. And it makes you wonder if they don’t put it on the scoreboard in Atlanta because … of Jeff Francoeur.

Anyway, the cartoon would start with a few fans shouting,

"Oh no, Professor Francoeur has taken on-base percentage off the scoreboard!"
"Now we’re stuck with just batting average!"
"Leave slugging percentage up there, man!"
"I have no idea what the true value of Kenji Johjima is now!"

Then, Big Bill James walks over. And he says to the last fan: "Uh, Johjima’s plate discipline isn’t too good. He has only walked once this year. He only walked 19 times in 409 plate appearances last year."

Professor Francoeur: So, at least we meet, Mr. Bill James.
Bill: Yes, it’s nice to meet you.
Professor Francoeur: Likewise. But now, I will take your statistic, on-base percentage, off the scoreboard forever! Ah ha ha ha!
Bill: It’s not my statistic. It has been around for more than a hundred years. Branch Rickey was a big proponent of on-base percentage, for instance.
Professor Francoeur: Yes, well, if you had not written that book Moneyball …
Bill: I didn’t write Moneyball.
Joe Morgan (special guess appearance): He’s right. It was Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane!
Professor Francoeur: Um, well, fine! So, if Billy Beane had not written that book Moneyball …
Bill: It wasn’t Billy Beane either. It was Michael Lewis.
Professor Francoeur: Michael Lewis? The guy who wrote The Blind Side and Liar’s Poker?
Bill: I guess so, yeah.
Professor Francoeur: Well, um, OK, I’m confused now. Joe, as long as you’re here, can you talk about how you were able to walk as much as you did?
Joe Morgan: It’s about heart, Jeff.

And so, once again, our hero Bill James saves the day.

Albert Pujols has come up with the bases loaded four times already this year. He’s 3-for-3 with two homers and 10 RBIs. That means he’s now hitting .398 with 8 grand slams and 122 RBIs in his career. I love that he has more RBIs (122) than plate appearances (118) with the bases loaded.

No — Boras believes (and correctly so), that you give up millions to do that. Very good win today. But its kind of funny the people that dislikes Kotchman but this guy has one of the best OBP of anybody on the team i think only Chipper is in front of him in that category. He has one of the better AVG on the team, only 1 homer but its not like everybody on the team is doin much of that though. Where is these posters at that said how Kotchman should be platooned? This guy has been very valuable to us especially his defense, and if we will want to win more we will need him to come through like he did today, he could be the X factor on this team.

I post here kind of regularly and I'm wondering....

Where are all these Kotchman haters you’re talking about? If there were any earlier in the season, I’m sure they hate no mo. And if they still do, they’re fools. The only time I’ve really seen him regularly is this year, but I like how he plays. I got a good impression of him from day 1.

well

there were alot of haters of his when we made the trade then when he stunk it up for us when he first got here last year and then they were bashin him in the offseason. I mean it wasn’t everybody bashin him but it was a good bit though. Maybe one reason was because people felt we should have gotten more so they just dont like him cause of that. But like Smoltz beard said no way he puts up the offensive numbers as Tex, that just wont happen, so if they thought that then they are idiots. And then it was that fanpost where somebody wanted Omar and Kotch to platoon and then that great post by royhobbs where he showed Kermit and Christian Bale Nodding there heads like in sarcasm after that guy wrote some stats down lol classic. Funniest thing i ever seen on here. But what im tryin to say is there was a good bit of Kotchman bashing especially last year when we got him and then even the offseason.

by rockybull on May 7, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

also

it shows that you just joined this year so thats prolly one reason you haven’t seen as much cause most of the ranting over him was not nearly as much lol, it was still there though.

braves#1

by rockybull on May 7, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

There was actually someone who was upset because they thought we traded Tex specifically for Kotchman…and when Kotchman was performing poorly they ripped into him.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 7, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

wow

I must have missed that or just tuned them out one. It was prolly some newbie. I mean obviously if we could have got alot we would have but this is the best offer in my opinion that was offered and Kotch is a solid young first baseman.

braves#1

by rockybull on May 7, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think many people have been bashing Kotchman, except for the people that ignorantly believe him to replace Tex…which face it, just isn’t going to happen. His defense is just as good, so that’s not a problem…and I’ve been quietly hoping all along that he can put together a season like he did in 2007 where he went .296/.372/.467

Most people would have to be happy about that.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 7, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I LOVE Kotch compared to Tex

Sure. The Yankees can have that……dude. I hope he enjoys all the money. Watches strike 3 fly by with more focus than almost anyone I’ve ever seen.
