Time Out for Schafer

Over the first month of the season, I think Jordan has been pretty good, considering he's never had a AAA at bat.  But it's time for the kid to take a break.  Over the last week:

2 for 23, 15K; including 0 for the last 14 with an astonishing 11K

The good news is that Jordan's eye is looking great.  He leads the team with 20 BB's, although some of those have been IBB to get the pitcher up.  Reports say his wrist is an issue.  If this is true, then he needs to rest it and get back to full strength.  It doesn't matter if he is Willie Mays in CF -- 11K in 14AB is not helping the team.

I know Blanco hasn't been tearing it up at Gwinett, but he's got MLB experience, and I doubt he would be worse than the last week of Schafer.  Time to give the kid a two-week breather and straighten out?

Redux?

Hasn’t this already been discussed like 5 times already? Schafer + struggles > Blanco + struggles.

Blanco had his shot last year and wasn’t spectacular. Let’s give Schafer a chance to battle through the wrist problem and see what the kid is made of. His production isn’t terrible for the 8th hole… I’m personally terrified of him hitting lead off at this point: he hasn’t really been challenged hitting 8th, and those times that he has he has, much more often that not, he’s not come through. I think he’d continue to be what we’ve seen minus all the walks…. which is scary bad.

This thought hit me on the way to work today, but it is only slightly off topic: since Omar has been lighting it up lately, do you guys think there is any chance we try to flip Kelly to the Cardinals for Ankiel again? I’m not sure I like the idea at all, but Omar has been playing an awful lot. Kelly + Reyes + Kotchman + Glavine + Anderson + Blanco for Pujols + Ankiel would be nice (I kid). I just wonder if the smell coming from the kitchen is Wren cooking something up.

I know Bobby must be going with the hot hand, but this seems very unlike him. He usually manages totally based on loyalty, but he isn’t showing much to Kelly right now. I think he’ll continue to be his totally loyal self with Schafer, though, until his defense starts to slip.

(be nice, I don’t post often. Read this site all day long, though.)

Ankiel pulled an Aaron Rowand the other day and crashed head first into the OF wall…ended up going to the hospital on a stretcher and is still recovering. With that being said, I’m not all that high on him in the first place. I know he’s better than most of our OF options, but I just don’t think Omar keeps it up.

It’s funny about Cox’s loyalty though…it’s certainly there for some people, but he has no problem benching KJ for any given reason.

Thanks for not lighting me up like you do most everyone else!

I figured a head injured Ankiel was worth a head case KJ. I don’t think Omar can keep it up either, but we still do have Prado….

I just ain’t going there.

I would be interested to see just what Omar could do with a whole year of playing time. I used to think about that with Diaz, too, but the results tempered my enthusiasm to give career benchies full playing time.

I thought the rumors

were KJ for Ludwick. I would make that trade right now, but I wouldn’t trade KJ for Ankiel. Rick has been as bad as KJ this year.

Serious Question

Is Kelly in left a completely dead idea? Could we just bench Garret and use Kelly there while Omar is tearing it up?

Seems like Kelly would be no worse than the Gman hitting against lefties. Still use Diaz VS righties until Kelly gets his head on straight. He isn’t going to solve his problems from the bench.

by Kelly's Big Johnson on May 7, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why not Chipper in left again? That way Omar can play third every day. Comeon, the kid is a second baseman and not hitting well. If Omar was the better player, he would have been a starter somewhere for some team during the course of his career (far as I know he’s always been a utility man).

Kelly’s struggling, no doubt. I think a lot of it has to do with him being in the leadoff spot. He’s not comfortable there, he presses, and it shows.

by kalesi on May 9, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Infante was a starter for Detroit in 05 and 06.

What about Chipper makes you think he could move out to left field. He’s not as athletic as he used to be, and he has bum feet. Seems like all that running would kill him. Plus, he won’t move.

Hmm, I wonder if there’s a way to set everyone’s default fanpost listing to more than 10, so that the previously bumped SCHAFER SUCKS BRING UP BLANCO from two days ago post can still be visible so that this isn’t rehashed yet again

My concern is for the kid's wrist

I know personally if you try to play through this kind of injury that you can"t be effective offensively.
It was only after I chose to rest my wrist , plus a couple of cortisone shots in the wrist for the inflamation did my wrist finally heal. I then was able to resume swinging the bat like I had prior to the injury.
I am afraid he is going to do more damage if he doesn"t stop swinging the bat and give the wrist time to heal.

what she said, except.....no cortisone shots for me....but yeah

People kind of ran with that Blanco thread…., but my only point was to give the kid 2 weeks off and let Blanco come up for a few. How could that freaking hurt? It would only help. Blanco plays solid D, and he hits occasional doubles, man. : ))

As close as our games have been, I don’t think Bobby wants to take the chance with a guy out there who’s gonna miss ANY balls that Schafer could get to. Wren’s been frank (see what I did there, heh heh?) about the fact that if we didn’t mind having a defensive liability out there we would have signed Dunn a long time ago.

i guess i was just thinking center field, but you’re absolutely right, i think the defense has possibly been the most disappointing thing about GA so far

"When life gives you lemons, just say 'F*ck the lemons,' and bail."

by Bravely going forward on May 8, 2009 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah the defensive liability reason i didn’t like. I mean sure i would like to have a gold glover in LF but i mean its LF, you can put your worst defensive player at that position you just need a masher out there and Dunn plays good enough defense to get by. I mean i even made a post sayin how a 2 year $20 million deal would be absolutely perfect for the Braves. It blocks NOBODY. Gives guys time to develop and we try to win now. Dunn makes $8 million this year then $12 million in 2010 that actually seems solid i mean Brave you would think could have done maybe $6 million in 09 and $14 million in 2010. Im sure he would have done that in a heartbeat. Maybe we just didn’t have that extra $6 million but i mean we signed Anderson and Glavine we didn’t have to sign neither and used that money and a little extra that they prolly still have on Dunn. Im sure if Wren REALLY showed interest and wanted to get a deal done then im sure we could have worked somethin out. I just still have no idea not goin after Dunn, its not like it was 4 or 5 years only 2 years.

my point was, would you want a guy who can only play defense well enough to “get by” when our team is struggling to score runs and losing by one or two each night? lately we’ve even been bit by the error bug late in games and its killed us.
