No Speed and No Power...it's killing us

With no speed in the line-up or a manager who is afraid to steal a base, and no power in the lineup we are in for a long season.  For the most part the starting pitching has been really good and the bullpen has been better lately, not good but better. What do you think we can do to solve this problem?  any trades? anything?  go braves.

A lineup shuffle could help this a little. Move Schafer to the top where his speed can give us a better chance of stealing bases. Move Johnson down to the 7 spot. Take Anderson out of the lineup everyday. I think a lineup of Schafer, Escobar, Chipper, Francouer, McCann when he come back, Kotchman, Johnson, and B. Jones or Diaz. That would make us a little better. But we still to have a more aggressive manager. The power thing is another problem. McCann is a mid 20’s guy in terms of home runs, Francouer is to much of a wildcard and Chipper isn’t a 30 home run guy anymore.
In terms of prospects Heyward is still atleast 2 years away, Freeman is probably more than 2 years and thats about it. Cody Johnson has good power but is flawed at many other things.

The reason Chipper isn’t a 30 HR guy anymore isn’t because he doesn’t have any power.

I know

it’s a combination of getting pitched around in our lineup, age, and injuries. That being said even in a lineup where he is protected I still don’t think he hits 30 home runs anymore.

2007: 600 PAs, 29 HRs, 75 XBH, .604 SLG, .267 ISO
2008: 439 PAs, 22 HRs, 47 XBH, .574 SLG, .210 ISO

You’re wrong…he still has as much power as he ever did. The only reason he won’t hit 30 bombs in a year is because of injuries.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Learn to read

Look at the third reason I listed above. It says injuries.

by jack dein on May 6, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I know how to read. You also listed lineup and age…which have nothing to do with his supposed lack of power.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 6, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I also listed injuries. I don’t know why your arguing with me I agree with you.

Trade Kala Kaaihue to the Atlanta Falcons for Mike Vick. Or do the Rockies still have his rights? Can you trade rights to and fro from different Leagues all together?

Trade Haithcock for this guy

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

can’t argue with that one..

Solutions

Here are some solutions that will come by themselves or could be done. I think I’ll get skewerd for #3 but oh well.:

1. McCann back at #4: As a legit power/average threat he offers the most protection for Chipper and will solidify the middle of the order.

2. Move Schafer to #1 and KJ to #7: This would allow the best use of Schafer’s speed and he could see some better pitches to hit. KJ right now seems to react better in the RBI role than the OBP role.

3. Let Francoeur and Ganderson work things out at the #5-6 spots: Frenchy is making good contact and driving in runs while limiting his Ks. He still isn’t walking much but thats ok as the power should come as long as he keeps making good contact. Ganderson is a slow starter and will take a week, or two, or three to get going but we need his .300/15-20HR bat to come around. I’m not a big GA fan but he is a slow starter and is very productive when he does get started (Post ASB in 08 .335/.360/.496/.856 and in 06-08 .313/.354/.497/.851) Patience with him is the way to go.

4. Trade for a bat: Meh, don’t like this option very well. Unless a fantastic deal comes along I don’t see this happening (just as a sidebar, I keep coming back to Vlad. He would be a rental and doesn’t play the field very well….but If the Halos need a young pitcher maybe we could snag him for 2/3 of a year for something not too valuable)

5. Relax and enjoy the season. We are preparing for a great run in the 2000 teens.

by bbxxj on May 6, 2009 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

I like McCann as a hitter but I hate having to have your catcher bat 4th. You have to assume that he will miss 15-20 games on an average year just based on days off for rest. I would rather have Francouer moved to the 4th spot have McCann bat 5th and cut ties with Anderson. For one I don’t think he’s got a .300 season in him anymore. He could get to around .280 and that would be about it. I also don’t think that he’s got 20 home runs in him. He’s getting old and has been losing power for a couple years now. Schafer would be better in the leadoff spot and Johnson would be better batting down in the order. I like Vlad but he is becoming injury prone to and can only play right field. That means that we would have to move Francouer to left which and he may not react well to the move.

by jack dein on May 6, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Why would Vlad only be able to play right? Left is easier to play and would be the best place to stash him.

by bbxxj on May 6, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Also

GA hitting .335 over the second half of last year leads you to believe he wont hit .300 again? Makes sense.

by bbxxj on May 6, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with giving Ganderson time, just wish it were in AAA. Unfortunately we do need his bat.

Why would the Angels trade Vlad?

They have approximately 5 outfielders, he’s hurt, and he’s a FA after this season

And maybe because they have 23 hurt pitchers (one who isnt coming back because of a drunk bastard)… and because of what bigjoe said. With GMJ hitting again they could have legit corners of Rivera, GMJ, a good CF in Hunter and a DH/C-OF in Abreu. Again, I’m not sure he would fit with the Braves because of injury, fielding concerns, and contract size/length.

I have always had a soft spot for Vlad because he signed a baseball for me when I was a wee one at Wrigley when he was still and Expo. He is a good guy from what I can remeber. I also got Shawn Estes that weekend though not as exciting.

All I’m saying is that if the stars align and midsumer if JoJo is pitching well, Hanson is ready to come up, and Vlad is healthy enough to play the field, and the A’s would eat alot of salary… I would trade Reyes straight up for Vlad and slot Glavine/Hanson in Reyes’s spot. Unfortunately this has about a .0011% chance of happening and I wasted a few minutes of my life writing it all out.

That Vlad autograph is pretty rare, the dude almost never signs now.

Gotcha. But, again, aren’t we out of money? And wouldn’t that mean trading extra talent to get Anaheim to eat the salary?

I here ya. We don’t have anyone on our team right now that I would trust trying to steal bases. Schafer has the potential but he isn’t ready right now. I think we should try to hit and run more. It would cut down on the GIDP’s that just kill innings.

I’m tired of watching another season of “win one lose two.” I can’t remember the last time the Braves strung together a winning streak.

Pitching staff is in place, I think. About as solid a rotation and pen as you are going to get in the Majors these days. I’d rather have pitching and no bats than bats and no pitching.

If I were Bobby I’d keep shuffling the lineup until something sticks. Shafer strikes out a lot, but it isn’t as though Kelly is getting on at a high clip either.

by kalesi on May 6, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

Kelly or Yunel are better hitters at this point in their careers than Schafer (SSS people) so keep them up there. Secondly, base-stealing is more important later in the lineup with your crappier hitters, since the best hitters (Chipper, McCann) hit more extra base hits. And third, Schafer isn’t actually good at stealing bases.
