Game 26 Recap: Mets 4, Braves 3
Smack dab in the middle of suck. The waste of space, Garret Anderson, returned to the lineup today and promptly went 0-for-4 and a GIDP -- great decision not to accept that rehab assignment Garret.
Kenshin Kawakami looked slightly better, but he still looked shaky, and Mike Gonzalez had a rough outing and was unable to hold the game close which ended up being the difference after the Braves scored a couple off of K-Rod in the ninth.
We are playing some miserable baseball right now.
It is becoming readily apparent, if it hadn't been up to this point, that we need another big bat in the lineup -- someone to hit effectively behind Chipper and hit for power. It occurred to me today that this team is offensively just about the same team that desperately needed Mark Teixeira two years ago. In two years, we really haven't found a fix for our offense, and until we do, we're going to keep losing like we have.
Another 2-game series starts tomorrow against the Marlins.

Is it just me or do even really good closers look like crap in non-save situations. I have been saying that we need another bat in our lineup since spring training. Our offense relies to much on being able to string together hits. Johnson should be hitting further down in the order. Escobar is a good enough number 2 hitter but he lacks power and doesn’t steal bases. Chipper is still a good 3rd hitter but he gets pitched around because there is no one behind him. Anderson sucks and shouldn’t be on the team anymore. McCann is a good hitter but he’s a catcher and requires days off. Francouer is way to streaky and lacks 30 home run power. Kotchman isn’t a bad hitter but being a 1B and not having that good of power makes him below average. Schafer if a K machine but I still have hope that he will get better as the season goes along.
At this point I think we need to go out and get a power bat for our outfield. We don’t have anyone in our minors thats going to be ready in the next couple years to produce 30 home runs and we need that now. Chipper needs protection and we are going to need another Chipper type hitter when he does decide to retire.

It’s just getting painful to watch this offense lumber and stumble along. As a team they have below average power, speed, and plate discipline. Basically, they can’t beat anyone with the long ball, they can’t manufacture runs and they can’t draw enough walks so when they do string together a couple of singles their are runners on base.

GAnderson= RMondesi a couple yrs. ago. Hopefully, Wren figures out this guy was a waste of money from the get go and the attitude should have said it all. It still kills me that this guys ego is so big he refuses to go get some extra work in in the minors/EST twice.

This is kind of true, but what I don’t expect out of Anderson is what Mondesi did – love him or hate him for it, but Mondesi more or less ushered in the Jeff Francoeur era, because after his initial call up, Mondesi attested to knowing something good when he saw him and did not object to his release because he felt that his spot was left in good hands. He gave his personal endorsement to Francoeur, which Schuerholz took to heart and even quoted in his book that Mondesi was a class act for doing such.
Yeah, I don’t expect Anderson to do even close to such, when he wouldn’t even take a rehab assignment even when Brandon Jones was playing more adequately than he was.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I do agree that Mondesi had/has much more class than Anderson is showing. I was just comparing their baseball skills (Mondesi then and Anderson now). Though I am pretty sure Mondesi could at least “glide” better defensively. But glad you did make a clear distinction b/n the two payers.

He swings at the first pitch with runners on the corners, two outs and………….flies out.

And Gonzo was the victim of bad defense and bad defensive positioning.

Guess I might be wrong, at least as far as the walks go, as the Braves somehow rank seventh in the majors in BBs with 108. They do, however, rank dead last in the majors with FOUR stolen bases! That’s incredible when you consider Carl Crawford had 6 in one game. They also rank 24th in home runs with 20.

When do we say fuck it and think about the future?
I guess its hard with all the money we have spent on starting pitcher its hard to even thinking about trading them for prospects. Especially with guys like Hanson and Heyward maybe only 1 or 2 years away. But I am starting to see this team as a sub .500 team that just stays enough within contention to make us not be sellers at the trade deadline.
by UltimaParadox on May 6, 2009 1:25 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would almost rather be sellers
and trade an MLB player or two for some young minor league talent (hopefully infield). Instead of giving up our farm for a washed-up vet, I would almost rather the team stock up for the run that starts in 2010. Next years rotation could be the best in baseball of the last 20 years, and all we need is some young studs to go in the infield and this team could be scary for a long time.
60% of the time, it works every time
by ATLandUNC on May 6, 2009 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Word
ATLandUNC has it right. We should be sellers. We should definitely look to trade someone to get good hitting prospects.
I’d love to sit here and say we are just in a slump, but I honestly don’t think it is. Whatever the problems are whether it be management or just not enough talent, something needs to be done. I almost can’t watch games cause all of the scoring changes we have been in and come away empty handed. Defense hasn’t been terrible, but the base running this season has been one hell of an eye sore.
I hate to keep dumping on the team along with everyone else, but I’m equally frustrated as the rest of you.
It’s gonna be a tough year, no way to get around it. I do like our chances in a couple of years and I can certainly bide my time until then.

some disconnected thoughts (hey, it's 3:30 in the freaking morning)
If we’re floating around .500 closer to the deadline and try to make a “miracle trade” to win the division (or more likely the wild card) it would be a mistake. . . I’m still hoping we will pull our collective poopie together and start playing some decent ball. Google “Garrett Anderson slow starter” for some funny/frustrating results. Our farm looks stacked, our base-stealing ability is atrocious, WE NEED A FIFTH STARTER. I like Kawakami’s stuff, but on top of the transition to MLB ball he’s going from a 6-man rotation to a 5-man, and we haven’t had a true fifth all season and have been relying on off days to keep us on schedule. Hell, Hanson’s ready, and I’m all for saving a spot for Glavine if he might be ready but pull the trigger on TH or bring Morton back up in the meanwhile. It’s early. There’s a lot of baseball left to play.
But there’s a lot of moves we could be making RIGHT NOW to improve our club. Go Braves!
by Meatloafin' on May 6, 2009 3:47 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
time to make some moves
Short of Heyward in the minors, do the Braves have any other power hitters in the minors? I’m talking about a 30 hr/100 rbi guy to play lf or rf. If not, put together a package of these .280 / 10 hr outfielders we have and go get one from somebody. Chipper needs protection, Mac can’t do it all the time, Anderson sux, Francouer who knows. Bobby’s done so much with so little for so long, that management thinks they can by with little to nothing in the way of offense. And eventually we wind up with the past 3 years. Time for changes.
by CDsdad on May 6, 2009 7:15 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I love how nobody in the press will talk shit about FUGA
“Anderson was activated Tuesday and returned to the line-up”
….No mention of 0 for whatever. He is the poison of this team. And Bobby sees him as the antidote. In short, we’re fucked. At least BJones would have gotten a walk or something, that could have potentially tied the game.
But I could care less any more. I’m numb. Let the losing commence!!!! We can drop to dead last if we keep this up!!!! 8 ))

I just told you how we finished the past three years…very poorly. The reason we did so well during the streak is because we had guys like Nixon, Furcal, and Deion…guys who could actually swipe a bag over70% of the time. We don’t have that anymore, so chances are attempting to steal bases would be doing more harm than good.

What angered me was the lack of hustle on Chipper and Infante’s part last night. Chipper had his head down when he grounded to Castillo, and didn’ t run hard until he heard the crowd cheer. Infante was the same. He probably coulda been on second on the Delgado drop, which obviously puts the tying run in scoring position for Escobar. you’re major leaguers. You will slump. You will hit into bad luck. But there’s no excuse for not hustling.

I thought it was crazy at the time for Wren to try to sign Furcal but imagine if that had all panned out including trading Johnson for Ludwick or some other LF who’s not a washed up has been like GAnderson. The offense would now be in much better shape. I’m ready to pull the plug on the Francoeur, Johnson, Kotchman, Diaz/Anderson line up. You aren’t going to score enough runs to make the playoffs when half your lineup consists of those players.

If were not going to make a move to improve this team then it’s time to start selling off the pieces. Our pitching staff has been great so far but with no offense its useless. When your pitching staff holds teams to under 3 runs a game and you don’t win thats a clear indicator that your offense sucks. Another problem thats being overshadowed by the offenses poor play is that the bullpen sucks to. Gonzalez is a good enough closer although I’m not sure I would trust him in the playoffs and Soriano is a good enough set-up man but the rest of the bullpen is pretty bad. There is something wrong with Moylan and instead of sending him to AAA to figure it out they just keep pitching him and hoping for the best.
I think its time to clear house on everyone coaching staff included and start building this team back up again.

I guess my biggest problem is that I don’t get to watch many Braves games. I don’t live in the southeast so that takes away PTV. If they are not on ESPN or FOX or the rare TBS game I don’t get to watch. I will get to watch maybe 10-15 Braves games this year. As a Dallas fan I get to watch about half the games. I’ve actually been watching the Royals play on FSN because its in my area. That team has a lot of heart without a ton of talent.

I just don’t get how people don’t see that everything isn’t so bad. As bad as the two guys playing left field are, they are still performing well under their career numbers. Kelly we know is better this year, just unlucky. McCann will be back and may not put up last years numbers, but he’ll spend the last few months bettering his numbers this year. Chipper will sort himself out and go on a ridiculous tear at some point and everyone else has been about what you’d expect. The pitching may come back down to earth a bit, but the offense will eventually wake up.

The pitching can be stellar every night, but if the offense doesn’t find a way to put runs on the board, it’s all for nothing. We had 10 hits and 3 walks last night for goodness sake.
Our starters shouldn’t be feeling every outing if they give up 2 or 3 runs they’re doomed for a loss.
How in the hell do you keep morale up on the field, in the locker room and in the stands (and blogs) playing like this?
It’s in the players faces when you see the opponent score a run first, like here we go again.
I don’t know the answer (crying over trading away bats and who we didn’t sign won’t help us now), but I know with the schedule in May, and playing their division so much if they don’t find a way soon – this season’s fate will be sealed early.

Stellar Pitching
The starting pitching has been pretty good…the bullpen has been awful. The bats aren’t the only problem with the braves, the pitching isn’t that good either. The depth on the starting rotation is ok, but there’s no great pitchers there. 3 days per week the pitching should keep the team in the game, but what about kawakami and the #5 of the week? The bullpen is a 50/50 bet to blow a good start anyway, since they won’t have a lead to work with if the offense can’t score runs. Best bet is to keep yunel, and the three best pitchers and listen to offers for anyone else to stockpile the farm.

Lowe, Vazquez, and Jurrjens have each been very good to start the season. Kawakami has been getting better and while he might not be an ace he doesn’t have to be. He just has to be a 4th starter and his numbers are not that bad and I think the more he gets used to pitching here the better he will get. Reyes has been solid and we have plenty of good 4 and 5 starters in our minors. Morton, Campillo, and Parr plus we have Hanson who has ace potential. While none of them could step in and replace an ace there is no team in the majors that has that type of player in their minors.
I think an improved offense could solve some of our pitching concerns. If the offense is scoring more runs it takes pressure off of the pitchers to be perfect every night.

I actually feel bad for our starting pitchers. They get a nice lead and the team can"t hold it for them.
The defense makes an error that gives up a couple of runs. The offense can"t get the runs back for them by not being patient at the plate or making base running blunders OR the bullpen comes in and blows it.
Our starting pitchers deserve a better record in my opinion.
