It’s just getting hard to watch. None of these guys are having fun. Instead of playing as a team, they’re all trying to be “that guy.” Not even going to mention Garrett Anderson. Hopefully he goes for the cycle tonite.

How about a minimum of Cinco runs tonight by the Braves!

Ouch, just heard KK has given up 5 HRs in his 4 starts…. suddenly I’m nervous.

GA will be fine, everyone needs to give him a break. The guy was playing hurt. Now that he’s hopefully healthy, we should see the true GA that played so well for the Angels.

Listening to Bill Shanks today

He read an email from someone from Virginia, and it had a list of things that the Braves needed to do. I swear it was from fatazfoot. I can’t remeber them all, but this one stuck out in my mind:

-Call up Freddie Freeman, so we can get power.

He also wanted Mazzone back at pitching coach.

by 10-4 on May 5, 2009 7:11 PM EDT reply actions

Heyward and Freeman are the reasons Atlanta isn’t going to invest much into a power bat anytime soon. These two are gonna rake in the coming years.

by BigG1392 on May 5, 2009 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

that doesn’t make any sense

by Smoltz's Beard on May 5, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

if you think about it for a minute…..it still doesn’t.

"Ohhhh Shit."-Bobby Cox, 3/28/09

by 10-4 on May 5, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

What I mean is, Atlanta isn’t going to give a big deal to a power bat any time soon. Most power hitters are 1B/OF, and giving up a big contract to a power bat in the near future would just clog up the openings for Heyward and Freeman to take over once they’re ready.

by BigG1392 on May 5, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

There are power bat options available that don’t require multi-year deals. And if you think signing a power bat will prevent Heyward or Freeman from seeing time in the lineup, and vice versa, you must not understand how baseball works.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 5, 2009 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

by chance13ga on May 5, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Tossing a thought out about KK:

I was thinking today about KK and the bit of struggle he’s had so far.

How much if any of it can be attributed to the physical size difference in the players he’s pitching to here vs. the size of players he’s used to before?

He’s had more success the first time through the order and first time facing a team, but it seems like the learning curve is shorter for the batters than for him and they’re making adjustments more successfully than he is.

Am I way off?

by NCChopper on May 5, 2009 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

I think it puts even more pressure on him batting with men on base, especially with his struggling of late.
He needs to lead off IMO. We can endure his learning curve easier there I think.

Yeah but the only problem is he is going to struggle to get on base. The majority of his walks have been accumulated b/c he hits 8th.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 5, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the Crasnick article put it pretty well. You go up there with a plan, looking for a pitch like you are ahead in the count until you get two strikes, and then have a two strike plan. If you get your pitch, whether it’s the first pitch or the fourth, you attack it.

by Uninvited on May 5, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that completely.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 5, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Honest question: Do our players look like they’re at bat with a plan these days?

No matter your plan, with 2 on and 2 strikes you have to protect the plate and make the pitcher keep pitching if you can. The more he throws, the odds go in your favor.

by NCChopper on May 5, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but if the first pitch is right down the middle you shouldn’t be upset if they put a good swing on it. If the first pitch is outside and they swing at it, than yes I agree with you.

Do me a favor and just look at the pitch location the next time it happens. More times than not Yunel and Chipper are swinging at first pitch fastballs right down the middle.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 5, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll pay more attention to location before bitching.

But even you’ll have to admit a lot of their 1st pitch swings never leave the infield.

Check the hyperbole at the door 36M a year? Don’t get me wrong, I love what Chipper has done for the Braves. I just don’t see him getting any better, and probably much worse, as he gets older. It’s going to happen.

And actually, he has been the problem, defensively, in 2 of the last few games. Errors happen, but let’s not let him off the hook b/c he’s had a great career.

Plenty of Braves need to step it up. He’s one of them.

by NCChopper on May 5, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I know I am 15 minutes late on this but it just makes me sick to see Chipper fight through an at bat against Putz and then get lucky when Castillo makes an error, only to have Garrett Anderson fly out weakly on the next pitch.

I try not to be too reactionary but for me Anderson is representative of everything that makes me upset about Bobby Cox’s ultimate reliance on older players. It’s clear Anderson could use some time to figure out what the heck he is trying to do at the plate and Cox puts him out there even after Anderson refuses to get a few rehab at bats. It just frustrates me a lot.

by bengoodfella on May 5, 2009 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

the problem is that I have no idea what a better option would be out there. Right now, we are really missing McCann in my opinion. I know it is early in the season, but it is not that early to where we can’t see trends developing. One of the trends I see is that I am not becoming a huge Garrett Anderson fan and I still have no idea where the offense is going to come from.

I feel like the Braves are a boat with holes in the bottom and every time we plug one of the holes, another one pops up. First, we fixed the bullpen a few seasons ago, but the team had other problems, last year we had Tex for a good portion of the year but our success was stopped by poor starting pitching and this year it seems we fixed the starting pitching but can’t find hitting. I need to go drink.
