Cory Gearrin Prospect Review

So here we are again back with another prospect review. Today's will be done by our very own cbwilk. Also a note is that Cory was actually demoted to Danville since CB sent this article to me so keep that in mind. Thanks and enjoy.

Gearrin is rarely mentioned when the topic of the Braves bullpen of the future comes up, but he certainly should be. A fourth round pick in 2007 out of Mercer University, he’s off to a blazing start as Myrtle Beach’s closer, collecting 6 saves in 9 appearances to go with a 0.82 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP. In fact, his career stats could pass for an outstanding single season for a reliever, 63 games, a 7-4 record, 7 saves, 3.79 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 13.2 K/9.

The right hander attacks hitters with a sidearm delivery that produces a low 90s fastball, buoyed by a biting slider and the occasional curveball. But, what sets Gearrin apart from other pitchers, is his attitude and approach; he has the kind of carefree take to the game and selective memory that are perfectly attuned to pitching at the end of a game. He pitches with a quiet confidence and doesn’t beat himself up over poor outings.

Gearrin is relatively new to pitching, only making the full time conversion in 2006, prior to a successful Cap Cod League appearance and a dominant season as Mercer’s closer, so hiccups along his progression are to be expected. After a mid season promotion to Myrtle Beach last year, he saw his ERA double as he walked a few more batters than he had at Rome and allowed a few more extra base hits. Obviously, he’s adapted to the higher level this season, but this type of adjustment period will likely occur at each level as he continues in his development as a pitcher.

However, overall, that development should happen smoothly, as Gearrin has succeeded at every turn and shown himself unflappable. He has the type of stuff and makeup to pitch as a Major League closer, or at the very least as a top set-up man. Given his dominance for Myrtle Beach, a promotion to Mississippi seems in the offing at any moment, and, from there, Atlanta is only a call away. A 2010 debut seems more likely, but Gearrin certainly deserves mention as one of the Braves’ most promising relief candidates.

Gearrin is one of my favorites, because he’s from my neck of the woods.

Hopefully, this shoulder thing is a not a big deal.

Do we know why Gearrin was sent back to Danville? Is he hurt? Certainly isn’t a performance issue.

I just read that he was sent to Orlando to see a specialist for soreness in his throwing shoulder.
