Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/29
Gwinnett 6, Syracuse 0
- B. Canizares 2-5
- B. Conrad 4-5 2B, HR(8), 3 RBI
- C. Morton 9IP 7H 0R 1BB 7K
Charlie Morton has just been great lately. In May he is 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA with a .190 BAA and only 11 walks in 45 innings. Basically he is back doing what he did last season. Maybe even he will get the call before Hanson does.Anyways, a shutout pretty much caps the month off for him. Brooks Conrad has had a solid month as well posting a .930 OPS with a .430 OBP in there. Nice.
Mississippi 4, Birmingham 7
- JC Boscan 2-4 2B
- C. Rodriguez 2-3 RBI, BB
- G. Creek 2-3 2B, 2RBI, BB
Well after posting a 1.47 ERA in April, Jonny Venters has put up a 4.46 ERA in May. Of course he has 2 wins this month against 0 last month. Those are reliable stats. The only other thing of note here is JC Boscan is still hitting over .400 on the season. Granted he should probably be in AAA, but .400 is .400.
Myrtle Beach 4, Wilmington 3 - Final 13 Innings
- CJ Lee 3-5 2B, 2K
- F. Freeman 3-5 2B, BB
- M. Kennelly 1-3 HR(1), BB
I like to see Myrtle Beach starting to win some games. These guys weren't very good when they were together at Rome last year and they haven't been great this year at the Beach, but they have so much talent. I wouldn't be surprised to see them start streaking at some point (clothing optional) and maybe take the second half crown in their division.
Rome 5, Bowling Green 4
- J. Sucre 1-4 HR(1), 2 RBI, BB
- J. Thompson 7IP 9H 4R 1BB 5K
Jesus Sucre continues to hit pretty well finally getting some power into his game. I don't know if you would really consider him a prospect but he's been really good with the bat so far this season. Remember when Samuel Sime was killing the ball early in the season? Yeah he is down to .253 now. He posted an .830 OPS last month and has a .501 this month. What a fall off.

I know this might not be the right place for this but...
Charlie Morton, Brandon Jones and Brandon Hicks for Brad Hawpe. The rox just fires Clint Hurdle and the word in Colorado, according to family I have living there, say that a firesale is expected. Hawpe would do wonders for our outfield. The rox get Morton who was nasty tonight, Bjones a solid OF option, and Hicks could turn into a Dan Uggla type middle infielder at Coors field. I know we would have to come up with 3.5 million or so to do this, maybe get rid of Failcoeur and/or Norton and get Liberty Media to throw in a million or so? I say we so it.
Oh and sorry again if I rosterbated on a minor league recap!
"Jason Heyward might be the best offensive prospect i've seen in fifteen years. His game is solid. I would trade any of the current players we have on our 25 man roster for Heyward. He's that good." - NL Scout.

Correction. Beer league softball could do wonders for Failcoeur.
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.

Osuna with yet another nice outing…
For the month he has a 2.48 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP, and if you take out his rough start to begin the month he’s got a 1.73 ERA with a 0.85 WHIP. For a guy that doesn’t get many Ks he’s certainly getting the job done.

Rome’s box score is crazy, every hitter in their lineup had one hit, but no one had more than one.

Medlen to the pen and Morton to the rotation anyone? Make sense to me. I really want to see how Medlen handles late inning work to see if we need to resign Gonzo or Soriano. You can never have enough solid pen arms and if Morton is ready to take on the bigs again we should maximize the talent on our MLB squad.

We don’t need to resign Gonzo or Soriano. Offer them arb, get the draft picks— they’re going to be out of our pay grade. Especially if they have a big year. Gonzalez just being a lefty that’s closer material is going to make him crazy expensive, and Soriano is just really freaking good. Winding up with like 5 picks in the first couple rounds of next year’s draft will make it all okay.

Aren’t they eliminating free agent comp, or at least trying to?

Not exactly...
But the union was pissed that Juan Cruz couldn’t get an offer because teams didn’t think he was worth the price PLUS the pick.

I think you gotta have the FA comp… It at least helps balance things. I think the system is flawed, but the overall idea is great.

Yeah...
But who’s our closer, then? Not exactly a job you want a guy to cut his teeth on for you.

How far are you going to be looking at the future, to where you’re not noticing what’s happening to the present? Draft picks are great and all, but the team will need to retain one of those guys to keep most of us from shooting ourselves in the head when we have to put up with a committee closer like in 2006, and like what the Natinals are enduring right now.
Between Soriano and Gonzalez, I think Soriano’s the better pitcher – and the one likely to command a high cost in the offseason, and the one that will probably get away. Gonzo, as much as I like the guy, has shown too much inconsistency, streakiness, and Jeckyll & Hyde-ing. So even if he decides to test the waters, I think he may be disappointed and end up re-signing with the Braves, for a reasonably beneficial deal.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

3 years is the absolute most that i would give for either one of them. If they want more years hey i say let em go i know we need one of them but not bad enough to go 4 or 5 years with.

Gonzalez will cash in just on his handedness if he puts together a solid year. And remember pre-TJ he had the save streak, so the whole inconsistency thing is sorta new for him.
I just think it would be foolish to throw the kind of money it will take to sign either of those two, because they’re going to cost more than they’re worth for us. Bullpen help is always replaceable, and IMO these two are making way too much money already.

I really think a Moylan, Morton, Medlen back-end of a pen could slam the door pretty well for pretty cheap too.
