Braves Minor League Hot Sheet

Alright, so continuing my stealing from Baseball America I am doing my first Hot Sheet of the year for the Braves minor leaguers. I am also going to try something new where I recap how some of our former prospects are doing for other teams.(Click the players names for their stats.)

Hot Sheet

  1. Kris Medlen - It is hard to be better than Medlen has been this season with a .188 BAA and 28K in 23.2IP. He was dominant as a reliever and he has been just as dominant as a starter. The question is now where his future is? In the rotation or in the bullpen?
  2. Tommy Hanson - Not much to say about Hanson that hasn't already been said. The guy is ready for the show and just needs a spot to open up for him. Someone will be trade bait in the next  year to open up a spot for him.
  3. Diory Hernandez - Hard not to vote for a guy who has been hitting around .400. He has never really hit like this before (his career minors OPS is .708 coming into the season) but he is trying to hit his way to Atlanta. He will be a decent backup INF for someone one day, but I don't think his defense is really good enough to warrant that either
  4. Luis Valdez, Cory Gearrin, Benino Pruneda - I'm not really sure why Cory Gearrin got demoted to Danville because these three closers have been ridiculous. Observe their combined stats: 27G 17S 32.1IP 20H 2ER 41K 0.56 ERA. HAHAHA.
  5. B. Canizares - Well he is flashing more power than he has in the past and is sporting a .963 OPS in the first month of the season. He did something similar to this last year though but he faded a little down the stretch. I hope he can keep it up.
  6. Deunte Heath - I just don't like what Heath brings to the table, but damn he has been nearly as good as any pitcher in the system so far. He just  needs to get his walks under control. He has also given up 4 unearned runs so we might need to keep an eye on him slipping later.
  7. Zeke Spruill - He got roughed up a little today with his control finally failing him but the most impressive thing about this kid for me is his groundball ratio. He is getting 2.4 GBs vs every flyball he gives up. Nasty. If he had a good defense behind him his stats would be even better.
  8. Gerardo Rodriguez - Rodriguez is a Yankees castoff that has been killing the ball for Rome this season. He has cooled off a little in the last few games but is still sporting a .921 OPS on the season. Take some more walks buddy and you could be a stud!
  9. Jeff Locke - Locke's stats aren't quite as ridiculous as some of the other guys farther up this list, but that is because he had one really really bad game. His last two games however have been absolutely awesome and I think he is going to be our top pitching prospect at the end of the year.
  10. Cody Johnson - This was an interesting one because part of Cody's stats don't look great but then the other ones look awesome. In the end he probably should be farther up the list. He is tied for second in HRs in the minors and his OPS is in the top 10 in the league. Also 7 of his 9 homers have come at home, in a notorious pitcher's park.

Requiem for a Brave

Elvis Andrus, Texas Rangers - Andrus was one of the big stufs in the Teixiera deal a couple years ago. I've never been sold on the kid, but he somehow made Texas' opening day roster and hasn't been horrible, posting an OPS a little higher than his minor league career. He has been trending down lately though so we shall see how he holds up throughout the season.

Jarrod Salty..., Texas Rangers - Salty struggled a little last year but finally got his chance this year even with all the competition among the Texas catchers (Ramirez and Teagarden) and became the regular starter in Texas. Now that he is getting regular time he is finally starting to hit a little with a .755 OPS on the season. I always liked Salty, but I think it had a lot to do with Jenny's portrayal of him in the old skits.

Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers - At one time Harrison was the Braves top ranked pitching prospect. Those were dark days indeed. He has given up at least 4 runs in every start this season (but is currently pitching well against the White Sox) and has more walks than K on the season.

Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers -  Feliz is the one guy who could really make or break the Teixeira deal (I know some of you believe the deal has already been broken) with his electric arm and studly 2008 season. So far this  year he hasn't been as dominant in AAA with 14 BBs in as many innings. I've never been really sold on him, but I have to admit his arm is pretty nice.

Max Ramirez, Texas Rangers -  Ramirez has a great bat but really isn't a great catcher. He was just recalled on Friday to replace Salty for a few days. He has gotten off to a rough start in AAA this year and may not have a place to play in Texas.

Kyle Davies, Kansas City Royals -  Davies was the toast of Atlanta when he beat the Red Sox a few seasons back, but then Evil Davies appeared and ruined everything. Kyle started the season with a bang this year but it appears Evil Davies has returned and his ERA has ballooned to 4.85.

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals - If I could have anyone back that we traded away in the past few years it would be this guy. Don't get me wrong, we got a great season from J.D. Drew (the best season of his career actually) but Wainwright is right on the border of being an Ace.

Blaine Boyer, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit an umpire in the face with a pitch.

Zach Miner, Detroit Tigers - Miner has been a great find for the Tigers having thrived as a swingman/reliever the past couple of seasons. He appears to be mostly starting this year though and he hasn't been quite as solid through the first month of the season.

Dan Meyer, Florida Marlins - I didn't even realize he was pitching for the Marlins until I saw him appear against us a couple weeks ago. Meyer was the guy I really thought we would regret losing when the Hudson deal happened, but that one ended up being one of our great fleecings. He has been solid as a reliever this season for Florida but was never fully healthy for Oakland.

I know I missed a couple guys like Lillibridge and Flowers. Someone else can recap them if they wish.

Blaine Boyer, St. Louis Cardinals – He hit an umpire in the face with a pitch.

I didn’t realize how much I missed him until now.

Tommy Hanson 4 ROY

Must be hurt or something….or he made somebody really mad, which I can’t imagine.

Boyer just too funny!!

Mariano Gomez

Should be on the hot list as well.

0.96 ERA – 18.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 9 BB, 9 K

If he keeps pitching the way he has I would be highly upset to see medlen in the pen. we have plenty of other options for the pen and the guy is throwing up Hanson like numbers so it would be pointless. i would love to somehow have them both up in the rotation but that would mean JoJo would have to falter and then Morton do bad as well. Not to mention Parr somewhere on that list

by drumzalicious on May 4, 2009 12:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s hard to imagine Parr in our long term plans in anything greater than the role he’s currently assuming.

Tommy Hanson 4 ROY

Medlin

is a really good hitter, too. That’s also another reason to keep him in a starting role.

Good stuff man. But, I will say, I think you should steal all the way from BA: put up a not so hot list. I’m not sure who’d be on it, probably Kimbrel.

Kimbrel has been getting hammered and has lost hi control. He pitched for Rome last night. 1 IP, 3 Ks. He should be back soon.

The Boyer line…well played sir.

But, Neftali Feliz? You aren’t sold on him? I understand that he’s still got a way to go to get to the show and could always destroy his shoulder and be just another story, but a guy with what some scouts have called an 80 fastball (20-80 scale) and an already above average changeup? Yes, please.

by Uninvited on May 4, 2009 8:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s only 12-10 in the minors coming into this season…he’s not all that.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 4, 2009 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes…but the walks are slightly troublesome.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 4, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but last year he walked 51 in 127 IP which is better, but not great.

Side note, I just noticed that Hanson has a 1-3 record this year…when will the Braves just release him already?

by Uninvited on May 4, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m assuming the reason his walks were down in A was because of the level of competition he was facing. Probably alot of swinging strikes…could be wrong though.

His BB/9 was 4.6 in AA last season, and according to Yon he hasn’t improved this season. He’s got a special arm, don’t get me wrong…but I’m just not going to blow a gasket like some people on here do when it comes to the kid (not saying that you are).

by Smoltz's Beard on May 4, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah, I try not to get worked up too much about pitching prospects due to just how volatile they are. Once they get to the big leagues, show no sign of injury, and then perform well, we can get excited. (Speaking of that, does Hanson’s arm motion scare anyone else? Maybe it’s because I read a Mark Prior horror story the day before he pitched on ESPN, but I got a little freaked out.)

I do wish we could have that trade back, though. I understood it at the time, knew that Andrus and Salty were blocked, Harrison didn’t strike enough people out, Beau Jones wasn’t progressing like they’d hoped, and never heard of Feliz, and knew how good Tex was. I just think about what Boston would give up/would have given up for Salty, and what a Feliz/Andrus package could get us with the economy and how overvalued prospects are. Oh well…

by Uninvited on May 4, 2009 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At least you admit that you understood it at the time, I can respect that. Too many people on here pretend like they were against it from the get go, and I know for a fact that wasn’t the case.

by Smoltz's Beard on May 4, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I was excited. Hindsight is 20/20, though and we clearly overestimated our roster. It was the right time to move all of those guys (with the exception of Feliz who’s stock continues to soar), just the wrong deal. They should have been moved to fill several holes on the team instead of just one.

by Uninvited on May 4, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wasn't on here, but...

I thought they needed another starter at the time. Even though Thor was awful, they still seemed to be a pretty good offensively, and adding Tex at the expense of starting pitching seemed unwise. But it’s done now, and fallow the farm is.

If you honestly felt that way, I feel like you were one of a select few.

But let’s not rehash that old debate. If there’s one thing that will make me leave this site forever, it’s the endless amount of people who claim to have been against that trade from the get go.

i tried to bait someone with the Hanson W/L record the other day, and nobody bit. I was disapointed.

I think we’re all smart enough to ignore that and look at the somehow INCREASED K rate, slightly lower walk rate, the lack of HR allowed, the Mendoza line batting average…and oh yeah, the BABIP of .338, indicating he’s pitching BETTER than his numbers dictate. Good lord

His FB is one of he best but his secondary pitches still need work. Yet, some have him rated ahead of Hanson. Go figure. ML hitters will set on his FB until he shows he has something else to get them out.

by braves99 on May 4, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I must be missing something here, but I see a kid who turned 21 just 2 days ago with a plus-plus FB striking out over a batter an inning in AAA. A kid who last year, when he was a 20 year old pitching in AA, led all starting pitchers in strikeouts per 9 innings. He just turned 21 and just by simply throwing his fastball alone could contribute in a major league bullpen right now. Yes, his secondary pitches still need work but some have already graded his changeup as above average.

Am I saying I’d take him over Hanson right now? No, Hanson is more polished, with better off-speed stuff, and ready to pitch in the big leagues today…he’s also nearly 2 years older. But, would I like to see the Braves with 3 top 10 prospects instead of 2? Absolutely…but I’m greedy like that.

by Uninvited on May 4, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely. Anyone who isn’t impressed with what Feliz has done in the minors doesn’t know a whole lot about prospects. Not only was he one of the most dominant pitchers in all of the minors last year, but he was doing it as a 20 year old in AA! It’d be one thing if he was 23 or 24 and dominating, but the fact that he was making people who are, on average, 3-4 years older than him look silly, that makes it much more impressive.
Does he need some more seasoning in the minors? Absolutely. His BB rate is much too high, but I would assume that it will tend more towards his norm as the year goes on. As has been mentioned, he still needs to work on his secondary pitches, but a fastball as ridiculous as his is a good base to build off of.

That being said, since he’s in the Rangers farm system, he’s going to turn into a pumpkin once he reaches the majors. He’ll then be traded away after 2-3 years of floundering and go on to dominate, ala Edison Volquez.

by drdonkeypunch on May 4, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Volquez’s walk problems are a whole other issue. Nolan Ryan-esque with the high K rate, high walk rate, and low hit rate

he's got no secondary pitches

Feliz’s fastball is straight and his slider is ok and his change up needs ALOT of work.

but he hits 100 consistently.

At what point

does Jo-Jo get replaced by Hanson?

by antbogey on May 4, 2009 8:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wrong question.

There are plenty of other ways for Hanson to come up. Plus, even though Hanson has been pitching well, I still think he needs a little bit more seasoning. He hasn’t pitched more than 6 innings yet. I think it’ll be a couple more weeks before they even start considering bringing him up.

Trade bait?

Jo Jo, Morton, Parr, gomez, etc…from this group and the pitchers name in the top ten who will be used as trade bait this year?…I like Parr. I saw him pitch last year, his first start in the bigs and he was all 3C’s…..Boyer hit an Umpire…did he take out a mascot too?

by bravestatoo on May 4, 2009 8:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Parr doesn’t have any value. If we are going to get something we need I.E. a big bat, we have to trade someone with some sort of value. Morton, JoJo or maybe even Locke.

by yondaime4 on May 4, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Charlie Morton

Morton pitched another good game last night. 7IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 10 K. He’s had one bad start (3 IP – 6 ER). The other four starts rival Hanson (23 IP, 6 ER, 29 Ks).

How’s Teheran doing (where is he now)? He could get the call if Kawakami goes down.

If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).

Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.
