Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/3
Gwinnett 0, Pawtucket 1
- G. Blanco 2-4
- C. Morton 7IP 2H 1R 3BB 10K
Well that was a hell of a start by Charlie Morton that just got wasted by the Gwinnett offense. To be fair they were up against Clay Buchholz who I think could be a good pitcher in the majors right now. I would have loved to be at this game.
Montgomery @ Mississippi - Postponed
Salem 2, Myrtle Beach 0
- J. Heyward 1-4
- E. Cordier 4IP 5H 2R 0BB 2K
Seeing Cordier finally start to put together some solid games is heartening, but at this point I'm just not sure we will ever get anything out of him at the major league level. He is only 23 this year, but that still makes him old for the Carolina League. If he gets hot this year and holds his own at AA maybe he puts himself in the picture for the bullpen in the next couple of seasons. If he does get hot he will be a trade chip we can flash around to teams. Also good news here is Jason Heyward finally played again after being out since April 26. This offense will start hitting soon. Hopefully.
Bowling Green 3, Rome 10
- L. Sumoza 3-5 2B, 3B, 2 RBI
- S. Sime 2-4 HR(1)
- R. Barba 3-3 2 2B, 3 RBI
- Z. Spruill 5.1IP 5H 3R 4BB 3K HBP
Well Spruill finally lost his control a little in this game walking 4 when he had only walked 1 in the 21 innings he had pitched before this game. He still got the win though and moved to 4-0 on the season. I like to see Sumoza tapping into his abilities a little. He keeps showing these flashes. Also Craig Kimbrel pitched one inning in his first game after getting demoted to Rome and struck out the side. Nice.

Kinda minor league related...
I’m watching the Sunday Night game, Rangers vs. White Sox
Playing in the game:
White Sox: Wilson Bay-tuh-meett (wearing McCann glasses), Brent Lillibridge, Corky Miller
Rangers: Matt Harrison, Elvis Andrus, Andruw Jones(batting cleanup), of course with Salty on the bench.

I was about to post the same thing. Crazy stuff.

No doubt. Think I’ll go watch!
Andruw’s in left?!
yeah the other 96 is that I am too good for everyone else.
Morton-Buchholz
I was at the game (drove down for all four games from Vermont). If Barbaro could have managed to saunter his way over from first to catch a pop up we’d have gone to extra innings.
Buchholz looked great but only went 5. Not really sure why, he seemed to be reasonably efficient with his pitches.
Charlie looked pretty good. He wasn’t dominant like Hanson or Medlen before him, but he pushed through when he got in trouble and pitched a pretty solid 7.
It should be noted…the Pawtucket offense outside of Chris Carter is awful. I’ve never seen a lineup so full of guys hitting under .200 in May.
Haven’t seen Diory Hernandez before this series, but at the very least he’s really dialed in right now. The defense though…eh. His two out error started the seven run third inning against Gamble in game 3. And Canizares? He SCREAMS AAAA hitter to me. Kills AAA guys but would fall flat against major league pitching (looked terrible against Buchholz/Bowden).

If you remove the pop up that landed on the mound, (the one that scored a run), Morton goes 7 with no runs, one hit, and ten K’s…How is that not more dominant than the previously mentioned starters Medlen and Hanson? Tommy K’d 9 I believe in 6, Medlen K’d 8 and each gave up three hits…

I guess for me it was an impression more than a numbers issue. With both Hanson and Medlen things just ‘felt’ under control. Maybe it wasn’t so much his pitching, but the combination of his error on the slow ground ball right at him, the two wild pitches and the pop up (that should definitely be the first baseman’s ball but Morton was right underneath).
It was less a quantitative measure and more a ‘vibe’.

The wording you used was pretty black and white that Morton was basically decent, while Medlen and Hanson were just overpowering…That’s not at all what happened. The PawSox were lucky to score that one run that they did. I can’t base my view of the game on the fact that Morton looked like an idiot after letting a bunted ball go through his legs. The pop up was in no way his ball. Pitchers are taught to get out of the way on that play…it was an unfortunate play and that’s all there was to it. After Tommy loaded the bases in the first (he was all over the place), I wouldn’t revert back to that instance in the game and say “I didn’t have that ‘vibe’ in the first”, because Tommy had no clue where the ball was going. I would also have to cite your quote about Chris Carter being the only good hitter on the PawSox, Morton K’d him twice.
