Open Thread 5/28: Braves @ Diamondbacks

Derek Lowe goes up against Darn Haren tonight in what could turn out to be a battle of staff aces. The Diamondbacks are currently 4th in the very bad NL West but they are 6-4 in their last 10 games and their offense is prone to break out with 9 and 10 runs games (as we learned in a 12-0 lost a couple weeks ago).

As of writing this (@ 1:30), there is no word yet on what Chipper and Escobar will be up to tonight. Chipper's toe has been giving him some discomfor lately and he posted his first career 4 K game yesterday. Escobar's hip is still bothering him though he has been able to take some batting practice in the past few days. Hopefully we will see him tonight.

Something really needs to shake up the offense.

- A nickname given by his minor-league teammates, we’ve heard it comes from several sources. One, he can sleep anywhere, anytime, two, he’s…not the neatest boy, and three, he eats “heaps” of food.

Hey HeyJude, thanks for asking. It was a very long day, but he’s home resting and doing well.
He’ll have a few uncomfortable days, but should heal quickly.

Alarm was 4:15 am this morning, so I’m running on fumes for this late start…hopefully the Braves offense will explode and make it an exciting game and keep me awake.

by NCChopper on May 28, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

If you don’t mind me asking, what happened?

by eaheckman10 on May 28, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He had an unexpected hernia rupture in his groin. They repaired it today and doc said by 4 weeks he should be back to his usual work/activities. His first EVER surgery and visit to the hospital (never broken a bone, had stitches or even major dental work) and he’s 35 – so today was major deal to him LOL.

by NCChopper on May 28, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, I hope everything goes ok with that. It must have been nice not having any surgery until you were 35 though

by eaheckman10 on May 28, 2009 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I had to bust him and tell him “Welcome to the Surgery Scars Club” ;-)

by NCChopper on May 28, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Rupture and groin are two words a man never wants to hear in the same sentence. I’m glad he is ok though!

by BigG1392 on May 28, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

So yeah, I’ve about had it with this team. There’s no way to explain this inconsistency other than our outfield sucks. Wren better make a move before we go from 3 games back to 13 games back.

by BigG1392 on May 28, 2009 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

If Wren were to trade for a bat, who would you guys give up; or better yet, who for you would be “untouchable”

Untouchable: Heap, Lowe, Jurgens

by NCChopper on May 28, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Hanson, Johnson, Freeman, Heyward from the minors. I wouldn’t mind anyone on the major league roster being traded except for Mac, Chip, Kotch, and the rotation.

Yeah, game over.

Guess what, this team SUCKS. The early success we experienced was anomalous. Kawakami is going to have an awful year, we are going to regret not signing Dunn, Schafer is up in the MLB too early, Francoeur shouldn’t be a starter, our first baseman has NO power (like the rest of our lineup), Gonzo isn’t what he used to be, and Medlen isn’t as special as everyone on here made him out to be.

Just needed to get that out of my system…

I know it gets tiresome reading frustration all the time – but can someone give me a reason to remain optimistic about this team and the months to come?

We don’t necessarily need to make trades, but we need to get rid of Frenchy and Kelly has been bad at 2nd, he should be in LF. We have a pretty good farm system.

by MatM on May 28, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

so . . .he makes one error tonight and you want to get rid of him at 2B? what about Schafer? Esco’s Errors? Macs Passed balls? come on. a guy makes an error you dont trade him.

Now if your going to talk about us not scoring runs thats a diff story

by drumzalicious on May 28, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

so . . . Lowe . . . is not gettng unlucky now

by drumzalicious on May 28, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

You know, i always hate when the Braves go on the West Coast road trip. There’s always the “how late do i stay up?” decision to make. But thank you Braves! I haven’t had to worry about it at all this week.

by 10-4 on May 28, 2009 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

The Braves are going to go 0fer on this road trip

Then when all hope is lost they will win just enough games to hover around .500 to continue the mediocrity

by UltimaParadox on May 28, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

always happens. i mean whats sad is that every other team on a skid is going down with injuries. Phililes have no starters. Mets are losing core players left and right.

We suck with our full rotation, bullpen, and Lineup. Esco goes out we still suck. Chip goes out we are garbage.

by drumzalicious on May 28, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I think even Bobby knows that Frenchy’s days are limited, but I doubt Schafer is going anywhere.

by UltimaParadox on May 28, 2009 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

If they have the balls to sit the fans golden boy they need to sit the other ones stinking it up.

Seriously. either we re-haul our lineup or we have a firesale. plain and simple. we wont get by tolerating mediocrity.

Schafer is not cutting it. DEF or not he isnt cutting it he is a liability and in fact the last two games he has taken bad routes all over the place.

I would rather have less range in CF, More in LF and keep FYF than continue with this crap.

Ankiel and Willingham need to be our CF and LF. end of discussion.

Our bullpen will hopefully be better with Campillo and Acosta but our offense is terrible.

by drumzalicious on May 28, 2009 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Ankiel and Willingham? Come on, they aren’t worth what they’d cost.

by MatM on May 28, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The sad part is now we have to overpay to get people to play in Atlanta

by UltimaParadox on May 28, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Both of their values are down it woudnt be that hard. the nats want some arms and we have some to spare.

by drumzalicious on May 28, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yea and they aren’t that good.

by MatM on May 28, 2009 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Ankiel: .247/.323/.400
Willingham: .228/.355/.465

Nothing to write home about. Ankiel isn’t worth much and Willingham while he is a decent bat, he isn’t the impact bat we need and not worth the price tag.

5/28/06

The Cubs scored four in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, but lost in 11 innings, 13-12, when a popup bounced off Aramis Ramirez’s head. The wind was blowing out at Wrigley and the Braves set a team record with eight home runs, including two each by Chicago native Adam LaRoche and Edgar Renteria. The Cubs hit none.

From Keith Law’s chat:

James (LA): You’re leaning draft, but you are always down to take a shot at the horrible right fielder in Atlanta. When are they going to get rid of him?!?!?!
