Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/27
Indianapolis 4, Gwinnett 9
- B. Canizares 2-4 2B, 3RBI
- B. Conrad 1-3 HR(7), BB, 2K
James Parr gave up 3 runs un 4 innings in his first game back in Gwinnett. Lucky for him the offense was on its game with every start except for Brian Barton collecting at least one hit (a PH for the pitcher collected one as well, I will count it).
Mississippi 3, Birmingham 2
- T. Jones 1-4 HR(2), K
- B. Hicks 2-4 K
- E. Campbell 1-4 HR(1), 2RBI, K
If Travis Jones can keep the power he showed in the Carolina League last year he could be something useful in the next couple of seasons. Brandon Hicks continues his slow turnaround. He is up to .274 for the month with a .727 OPS. And I really can't believe it took Eric Campbell this long to hit a homer, but he is on a 10 game hitting streak right now, the problem so far is he just isn't hitting for any power on the season which is the opposite of what he has always done. Maybe he was juicing.
Winston-Salem 0, Myrtle Beach 6
- F. Freeman 2-4 2B
- D. Linares 2-4 2B, RBI
- CJ Lee 2-4 3B, 2RBI
- R. Sullivan 9IP 3H 0R 2BB 9K
This might be the best pitching line any Braves farmhand has put up this year. It certainly rivals any of the ones Medlen and Hanson have put up. This is a little surprising considering Sullivan has given up 4 runs in all but one of his starts in Myrtle Beach. I guess something clicked today or he was facing a puny offense. Jason Heyward was off for the day and Cody Johnson went 0-4.
Greenville 5, Rome 3 - Game 1, 7 Innings
- J. Sucre 2-3
- S. Shults 1-2 HR(3), 2RBI, K
- R. Delgado 5.1IP 8H 5R 3BB 6K
It looks like Delgado may not be quite ready to to assume the mantle of teen pitching sensation I was so ready to crown him with. I'll put it back on the mantle until Teheran is ready. Jesus Sucre keeps on hitting singles putting his AVG at .337 on the season.
Greenville 3, Rome 4 - Game 2, 10 Innings
- G. Rodriguez 4-5 2B, 3B, HR(9), 3 RBI
- C. Kimbrel 3IP 1H 0R 0BB 5K
Yes that is right, Gerrardo Rodriguez hit for the cycle today. To cap it off his homer came in the bottom of the 10th in walk off fashion. That is one hell of a day. Also it is nice to see Craig Kimbrel to come out of the pen for more than an inning and get it done. Nice work. You have to wonder when he will be shuffled back to Myrtle Beach.

Yeah Travis looks to be very useful for us in the future perhaps. I knew the guy could hit but didn’t know much about his d and then cb talked about his d so if he keeps it up could be in Atlanta by late 2010 or 2011.
Wonder if Heyward and Freeman will get the call to AA by mid July or beginning of August if they keep the hitting up which they should or maybe they get called beginning of July should be interesting when and if they get called to AA.

It wasn’t noted, but the Mississippi Braves game was a “Turn Back The Clock” type game in the oldest pro ballpark and I was lucky enough to attend and take some pics. If anyone is interested in seeing them, they’re at http://s428.photobucket.com/albums/qq8/bpenno/Rickwood%20Classic/
Does Campbell have a mustache? …so not only does he look stupid, but he’s breaking the organizational facial hair rules. Great.

They are somewhat strict. They tend to be lenient to the guys who have fast growing beards. Like Bryan Digby back in the day, that guy could shave every inning and still have a beard working. It usually comes down to the manager, if he likes having facial hair, like Wellman and Ingle do, then he’s gonna be pretty slack on it.

Why not give that teen pitching sensation mantle to Zeke Spruill?

That would make an awesome promotion

And you will know I am ZEKE… when I lay my vengeance upon you.
But that might ruffle a few feathers amongst the religious.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Mr. Promotion over here...
I’ve liked them all!

Delgado is still at the top of my list
This was the worst start of his season, and he has only given up 4 or more runs twice (out of 7 appearances). Those two outings were also the most innings in a game (4ER/6IP and 5ER/5.1IP). Thought switch…
It just occurred to me how many legit teen pitching “top 10” prospects we have. Delgado, Spruill, Teheran, DeVall, and possibly a guy like Wheeler via 2009 draft. Then you have 22 year old Tommy Hanson in AAA and 23 year old Jair Jurrjens dominating the MLB. Pretty exciting stuff, considering I’m older than all these guys now (just a couple months older than Jair). I couldn’t imagine being able to pitch at their levels at this age…

Id there anybody that’s tearing it up enough to expect a call up in the near future? Besides TH of course.
Luis Valdez, closer for AAA Gwinnett, is pitching well at the end of games. I expect him to be called up at some point in the near future. Mississippi’s Travis Jones might get the jump over Gwinnett’s JC Holt if the Braves need some extra assistance covering second.
Nonprospects Mariano Gomez, Manny Acosta, Juan Perez, and Vladimir Nunez are pitching well in Gwinnett’s bullpen aswell. Remember the names of relievers Bryan Dumesnil and Kevin Gunderson from Mississippi too.

And Nunez came up last year and did pretty well for himself.
Perez, also, has some ML experience.

I don't think there should be too much to be concerned about with Delgado
At Rome, I think you sort of have to look past the ERA and the W/L with a lot of these guys… Obviously, it would be awesome if he were dominating and he hasn’t pitched so hot his last couple times out but the peripherals are still basically in line with what he was doing last year at Danville.
Danville 08: 8.2 H/9, 0.65 HR/9, 3.9 BB/9, 10.6 K/9
Rome 09: 9.4 H/9, 0.83 HR/9, 4.1 BB/9, 9.9 K/9
Obviously, the numbers aren’t quite as nice… But for a 19 year old in full season ball they aren’t unimpressive. I still love the ground ball tendencies and the strikeouts. I don’t think he’s done anything yet this year at Rome to raise concern or lower his stock. And it’s still awful early…
Tommy Hanson 4 ROY
Or is he on his way to Misssippi?
Q: If on-base pct is so important then why don't they put it on the scoreboard? -Failcoeur
A: Because the Braves don't want to show their fans how bad you suck.
