Game 44 Recap: Giants 8, Braves 2
The Atlanta offense went back to their fallow ways, as Brian McCann collected half of the team's 6 hits. Without standouts Yunel Escobar and Chipper Jones in the lineup again, the Braves were only able to collect 2 extra base hits, a Kelly Johnson triple and a Javy Vazquez double. Making matters worse, Jordan Schafer's struggles continue, as he collected the Golden Sombero, striking out in each of his 4 plate appearances.
Of course, not much went right on the pitching side of things either. The wheels fell off for Vazquez in the 5th and 6th innings, as he allowed all 5 of his runs between those two frames. And, after Jeff Bennett closed out the 6th, Buddy Carlyle came on and continued the Boyeresque streak he's been on. The time for Carlyle's exit from Atlanta has come; over his last 5 appearances, including today's game, he's allowed 12 earned runs in 7 innings.
And home plate umpire Jerry Meals deserves to get called out for his terrible performance today. He missed two interference calls when Juan Uribe obstructed Brian McCann, made a very questionable call when McCann seemed to tag out Fred Lewis at the plate, and generally had a strikezone that was wide and inconsistent.

He played center for about an inning last Thursday. Nothing was hit to him, though.

Anyone see Baseball Tonight?
Gammons did a segment on Frenchy. Basically said he was rushed to the majors, whcih really ended up hurting his plate disicpline. He also said releasing him would be stupid, because someone like the Royals would immediatlely pick him up (I think those two thoughts are mutally exclusive though). Finally, Gammons thinks that the more that Frenchy plays, the better he will become to being a good everyday major leaguer.
I tend to agree with the majority of posters here, we can’t wait forever for Frenchy to come around. We need to move on.

I feel ya
I’ve always supported him, but my patience is waning. He perplexes me, utterly and completely. He carries his weight v. lefties, showing some degree of plate discipline and slugging at a respectable clip, but he falls apart v. righties. I wonder how long he’ll go before he sees a 3-0 count.

Did you notice today when twice they brought in righties just to face him? And both times the righty got him.

Sucks
I honestly want the guy to do well. i would be happy with a .800 OPS and a .280 Average and just solid production like he was at the beginning of the season where he was getting all those 2 out RBI’s.
Thats all we really need from him i think he is pressing thinking he has to be another chipper when we just need him to be a right handed Kotchman

It’s not like FYF had good plate discipline in the minors. Gotta disagree with Gammons here.

“The more he plays?” He’s played virtually every freaking game since he came up!!!

Is Jerry Meals the same umpire who wouldn’t ask for help on that one call in Philadelphia I think?

For sure
Jerry Meals sucked.
To be fair though, Javy was an idiot for trying the throw to second on the bunt. It kinda snowballed from there… if that didn’t happen he woulda saved himself 2 runs, leaving it a 3-2 game and then Carlyle woudn’t have been brought in.
When I heard on the telecast that Buddy had given up something like 12 runs in his last 6 innings, I just thought…. why is he still with us. There has GOT to be someone in AAA that can pitch better than that.

Its on the website that when campillo is able to come of the DL they will send Buddy down and bring up Campillo

Umps sucked. Javy made a terrible choice trying to get the out at 2B. Bobby left him in too long, brought in Carlyle, and continued his stupid propensity to IBB in questionable situations. Offense, sans Heap, stayed in Atlanta.
Pretty much sums it up.

“Let’s walk FRED LEWIS to get to this guy with the Japanese last name who has basically raked us since he came into the majors”
Maybe Bobby is really pissed at Buddy or something, and totally set him up for a huge fall there.

Yeah, I’m usually just fine with the intentional walk to set up a double play, but you have to be aware of who’s coming to the plate. You don’t walk to get to the guy who’s 3 for 3.

Plus…it’s not like Carlyle is a ground ball pitcher. Just didn’t make a lick of sense, and I cursed to myself as it was happening because I knew it wouldn’t be pretty.

The good news is that the Braves have two good opposing pitchers coming up, which means they’ll play to their capabilities.

I was at the game and it looked like it was going to be such a great pitching duel and then the wheels kinda came off for both pitchers (unfortunately for the Braves the Giants got Sanchez out of there before he could dig his own grave). Buddy needs to go so badly it’s not even funny. In three of his last four appearances he’s allowed two grand slams and a three run shot.
