Open Thread 5/25: Braves @ Giants
Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants, May 25, 2009 4:05 PM EDT
The Braves head out to San Fransisco to begin a 3 game set with the Giants, and, in an odd bit of scheduling, the opening game of the series is a day game. West coast teams have been accused of inconsiderate scheduling for a long time, and this is a perfect case. Sure, the Giants are coming home from a road trip, but traveling from Seattle to San Fransisco is much less taxing than the cross country journey from Atlanta to San Fransisco. Hopefully the Braves can fend off their jet lag until later this evening and start off the road trip on a positive note.
Javy Vazquez, winner of his last 2 decisions, takes the hill for te Braves. Vazquez has been very, very good for Atlanta this year, amassing quality starts in 6 of his 9 appearances, and striking out 73 batters in just 58.1 innings. That's 11.3 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched! It will be interesting to see if he can maintain that pace, as he's never come anywhere close to that number in his career. But, as long as he keeps his team in the game, a bit of a dropoff in strikeouts isn't going to bother anyone.
In an all Puerto Rican matchup, Jonathan Sanchez, who some posters here on Talking Chop suggested acquiring during the offseason, will oppose Vazquez for the Giants. Sanchez has not been anywhere near as sucessful as Vazquez this season, posting 4 losses and only turning in quality starts in 2 of his 7 starts. He's walked a ton of batters, 28 in 38 innings, so hopefully the Braves can work the count and take advantage of his wildness.

You know, I think GAnderson has been doing a better job recently. Better hitting, better fielding. I was a huge Garret hater in the beginning, but he’s starting to win me over.
I could go with either/or
…now that I know GA isn’t a liability
I love watching Matt play, too.

While I appreciate the fact that he’s starting to get on base…which is the most important thing of course…the thing is we signed him to supply some sort of power. It ain’t happening.

Given it time?
http://deadspin.com/5100372/the-curious-case-of-fred-hickman
Number 10…Fred is one of the funniest things ever:
“SportsCenter anchor John Anderson still begins his top 10 plays segment by saying “Number 10…Fred.” This is an inside joke done to pay homage to Hickman’s tenure. The origins of it come from when one PA wrote out the top 10 play list by giving name indications on each play. Number 10, in this case, was given to Hickman and marked “Fred” on the prompter. Hickman, in turn, read "Number 10…Fred " on air. Anderson supposedly asked producers if he should continue with his Hickman joke after he was gone. The answer was a resounding “yes.”"
sounds about right

Mac needs to work on his release. He takes too long to get rid of it.
Has the whole world gone crazy? Am I the only one around here who gives a s#!t about the rules?!?
In a game recently, they were talking about how McCann’s release this year has improved. He used to stutter step before throwing, but now he plants his right foot and just steps forward-less movement=faster release.
Not that you saw it there-he had to fire over the obstruction in order to get the throw off.
Funny, I thought he was just playing the match-up. Emmanuel Burris has a .600 OPS, and his career OPS is like .650. His OBP against righties this year is a Francoeur-ish .301.
With one out and the pitcher on deck, you intentionally walk and set up the sacrifice. If he gets it down, you run the risk of the man at third scoring if it’s a really good bunt. Worst case, you put runners on second and third with 2 out. So then you’re stuck debating whether to intentionally walk another man to load the bases.
Every arm chair manager has 20/20 hindsight.
I’m aware of all that. However, Sanchez has 6 career sac bunts, so the chances of him scoring the runner from third are pretty much nonexistent.

It’s bad when 3 runs down are like 10 for other teams.
Our offense is anemic and gives yet another pitcher who has been struggling a reason to celebrate.
What I'm gonna say is probably not going to be popular with most
But Vasquez is a headcase. This must have been the point Ozzie was trying to make last year in saying that he chokes in big games.
Trying to get the guy out at second on that bunt was just a ridiculous play and can only be described as a mental lapse.
And dude’s propensity to cruise through games and then just collapse in one inning (something he’s done through his whole career apparently) is just mind boggling.
There’s no reason for a guy with his stuff to not be one of the better pitchers in baseball.
I’m not trying to tear him down, because for the most part he’s been great this year, but this is not a guy I’m dying to run out there in a must win… give me Jurrjens or Lowe for that.
by get swoll yunel on May 25, 2009 5:40 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah
I agree.
Most of that was probably a lot of “captain obvious” stuff for most of you, but the guy can be really frustrating to watch sometimes.
by get swoll yunel on May 25, 2009 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions
The braves aren't asking him to be an ace
He was brought in to be a solid #3 — pitch a lot of innings, keep your team in the game, have a few good outings. He has done that and more.
What sucks though is that the guy always appears on the cusp of being flat out DOMINANT.
… But it just never seems to happen.
by get swoll yunel on May 25, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I view that as "upside"
rather than a frustration. If you expect him to be decent and he’s outstanding, then things will go better for you.
Think you’re being a little hard on him, but you’re entitled to your opinion.
by Smoltz's Beard on May 25, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions
What the hell was that last inning though?
Not only the bunt play, but he shook off Heap in order to throw a fastball to guy on a full count (with a terrible hitting pitcher on deck no less) and then proceeds to groove it right down the plate (after he had just froze him with a back door slider).
Then does the exact same thing to Rents… even though he’s been locating all of his offspeed stuff for strikes for most of the game.
by get swoll yunel on May 25, 2009 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I could bring up a dozen instances in his past couple starts where he stepped up in game during a scenario and made a great pitch.
Believe me, I’m upset with last inning too…but I’m willing to give the guy a little breathing room with how he’s pitched so far this season.

Time for Buddy to take one for the team
Don’t need to use anymore arms in this one.

Maybe we can rally like that one Dodgers-Phillies game from like 19 years ago where the Phils came back from being down like 9 runs in the ninth inning….?
… or maybe not.

Mac wants Joe Mauer to feel a little competition.

Buddy's Last 5 outings:
2 GS, 1 3R HR, at least 1 run scored / appearance.
Why is he still on a ML roster?
Sometimes we’re gonna lose games, guys. It’s long, long season.

I feel like they battled somewhat in this one, going down 3-0 and immediately trimming it to 3-2 even with the black holes that are FYF and Logan hitting in the inning.
The decision to let Vasquez rot out there in the bottom of the inning took a lot of wind out of our sails, but what can you do?
We can only get so much going without Chipper/Yunel in the lineup.

fair enough
but guys like Carlyle on the team make you wonder what’s going on in the minds of the decision makers
He’ll be gone soon enough, man.
The guy has been awful.

They have to make a roster move to bring Campillo back, and they’ll almost certainly DFA Carlyle.

Unreal
SD, down 1-7 is now up 9-7 in the top of the 10th. Going for 10th win in a row
"Both teams have played error-less baseball"...
Not sure about that’ one Boog…
Seriously now
Schaf’s gotta go work some things out in the minors…

dont you just hate...
how the Braves just swept the formally best team in the AL then goes to SF and sucks…
we could blame it on FYF, K-Fer, the umps, or havin a day game after flying across the country… oh well we’ll get em next game
Why even put Chipper in there?
No reason to risk him getting a hangnail and having to go on the 60 day DL
anti-huzzah
Better luck tomorrow guys! Come back soon Chip / Esco. Lincecum has been erratic lately, so hopefully we’ll get the bad-Tim. Big Unit has also been batted around a bit.
Only good thing about this game is our bullpen got a rest.
And hopefully Buddy won’t be able to pitch for days.
Hopefully it will be because he is released.
When Campillo comes back i wonder if they will release him

Did Boog just say Medlen's going against Lincecum?
Jesus, that’s not even fair…
