Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/24

Just to note. Gwinnett is 24-20 and 5 games out (3rd in Div); Mississippi is 20-22 and 8.5 games out (5th/Last in Div); Myrtle Beach (the team I think is the most talented of our minor league teams) is 15-27 and 6.o games out (4th/last in Div); Rome (who I think is the least talented team) is 24-19 and tied for first in the division.

Toledo 1, Gwinnett 4

  • G. Blanco 2-3 RBI
  • B. Jones 0-1 3BB, K
  • V. Pope 2-3 2B, BB
  • A. Colina 2-4 HR(2), 2RBI
  • C. Morton 7IP 4H 1R 0BB 4K

A solid win for the Gwinnett ballclub with a lot of people chipping in. Morton hasn't been quite as dominant this season as he was last year in AAA but he has still been very good, just outshined by the hijinks of Medlen and Hanson. I still think he could be a solid 3-4 starter in the majors but it won't happen with Atlanta. Brandon Jones has a .412 OBP on the season and if he could just develop some kind of power, maybe 15 home run pop? He could be really useful. I mean he is useful now, but just not starter useful. Maybe he is the guy who just needs his shot in the majors to break out.

Mobile @ MIssissippi - Postponed

Wilmington 5, Myrtle Beach 4

  • J. Heyward 1-4 HR(9), K
  • F. Freeman 2-4 K
  • D. Linares 1-3 2B, 2RBI
  • J. Locke 7IP 7H 4R 2BB 4K

Another 'meh' kind of start for Jeff Locke. The defense didn't help him out much yet again but his strike outs are down a little from the beginning of the season. Jason Heyward has 4 homers in his last 10 games and is only 2 shy of equalling his total from last season. I was a little worried last season we might end up with some Joe Mauer type guy (the Mauer of years past anyways) who always flashed crazy power but never tapped into it in games. But that doesn't look to be the case this year. Not so far anyways.

Greenville 1, Rome 0

  • L. Sumoza 1-4 2B
  • J. Sucre 2-4 2B
  • B. DeVall 5IP 6H 1R 1BB 2K
  • P. Clemens 4IP 2H 0R 1BB 2K

Clemens and DeVall pitched really well in this one but the Greenville pitchers were even better (or conversely, the Rome hitters that bad). Paul Clemens may have figured something out in the past few games as he gave up 19 runs in his first 5 outing and has allowed only 1 over his past 4. His Ks are down a bit in those but obviously the overall production is up so I'll take the lower K totals. His stuff is excellent so I think they will come as he gets adjusted.

I was at the Pelicans game

Locke, to me, pitched pretty well outside of the 1st inning, when an error seemed to unravel him a bit. He also seemed to nibble some too. He did, though, get out of trouble pretty well, allowing no runs in a 1st & 3rd, no out situation with the aid of a putout/forceout DP, and allowed just one run in a 1st & 3rd, 1 out situation. Heyward’s homer was to a pretty deep part of the park, had to go at least 400’. Also, this game was a great play by the BR SS away from being a walkoff win from .132-hitting Chad Lundahl. Mike Broadway (a real tall boy) gave up a solo shot to take the loss.

Also, I saw both Freeman and Heyward make poor plays on pretty routine defensive efforts. Freeman, giant as he is, managed to get eaten up by a grounder that went over his head, and Heyward looked a little lazy getting back to a ball that rattled off the wall over the line. Neither play led to a run, but it goes to show you these young kids still have much learning to do.

Oh...

And I will say, in general, that this team strikes out too much. Making the other team make plays because of contact would be nothing but a good thing.

Also , the papers down here have been talking lately about Rocket Wheeler trying to teach this group of guys to win. Many came from last year’s Rome team, which was 56-81. They seemed like they were on the right track with a 3-run seventh to tie the game at 4, but they couldn’t quite overcome the homer in the next inning.

Good stuff

I like this Rocket Wheeler guy.

You’re right about last years Rome team. They got off to a bad start and never really recovered. Most of them ended up just playing for individual numbers. It was pretty obvious.

Yes...

It has been specifically mentioned—both in print and on the pre-game show—that guys can’t just be happy going 3-4 in a loss.

Anyone by chance

Know who’s starting for Rome tomorrow? Weather permitting, I’m heading up there to catch the afternoon game, and I can’t find the probables on romebraves.com.

Delgado would be nice, as well

Coming off his first loss. Perhaps he’ll rebound with a nice no-hitter.

I may head back down to see Zeke again as well if I can get someone to come watch the ballgame with me.

The only thing is, I want to go to Gwinnett on Tuesday to see Tommy pitch. And realistically, I probably shouldn’t go to both games.

Hanson on Tuesday?

Ooh, that sounds like a good time to go see my first Gwinnett game!

Appreciate the standings recap. Been wondering that for a while, and I’m far too busy to look them up myself.

God, on Heyward.

Wake me up when he’s in the majors. I know we’re playing pretty good ball right now, but I can’t wait to watch him every night. It’s like yondaime said, I was a bit worried the power might not be there, but between how he hit in ST and so far this year I think he’s resoundingly answered that question mark.

It’s pretty awesome when you have a prospect so good that it’s not a question of if, only when.

After watching Morton pitch in the majors last year and watching Medlen’s first start, I have to say I think Morton has way better stuff. I know it’s early to judge Medlen on one start, but he barely hits 90 on his fastball and it seemed too straight. I see bullpen in his future. I want to see Morton start again for the Braves.

Morton pitched 6 innings in Spring Training. His arm was bothering him significantly after his first couple starts and his stuff suffered as well as his numbers during those first few starts. The injury that Campillo missed a month for is the same one Morton had but pitched through. Also, Morton is pounding the zone a lot more than last year with more four seam fastballs. His fastball to off speed ratio might be 8:1 or close to it. I believe he’s leading the league in innings and wins. I don’t think he’s doing too poorly in strike out totals either. He’s able to sustain velocity as well even into the 7th and 8th innings. He’s pitching more to contact and is becoming more aggressive.

Have you gone to see him pitch this year?

Not being a smartbutt, I’m honestly curious.
