Acosta Recalled; Parr Demoted to Gwinnett
This was mentioned in the Open Thread the other night, but it's worth noting on the front page; the Braves have recalled right handed reliever Manny Acosta from Gwinnett and optioned fellow right handed pitcher James Parr to Gwinnett.
Parr had been lest than stellar in his first crack at full time releif pitching, posting a 5.79 ERA in 8 appearances, covering 14 innings. He allowed 17 hits, 5 walks, and a .293 average against, and in his final appearance Tuesday night, the wheels really fell off, as he allowed 4 earned runs in a Colorado drubbing of Atlanta.
Acosta has had his own rough times for the Braves, earning the nickname "Manny I'll-Cost-Ya", but the struggles of the 2009 Braves bullpen have had Talking Choppers calling for his promotion. Acosta was putting up very good numbers as Gwinnett's primary setup man, posting a 2.86 ERA in 15 appearances, though he did have losses in 3 of his 4 decisions.
It's clear that a move needed to be made in the bullpen, but whether or not this was the right one remains to be seen. The more logical choice for relief help would have been Luis Valdez, who has been outstanding as Gwinnett's closer, posting a 1.77 ERA in 16 games while collecting 8 saves. But, Acosta is on the 40-man roster and Valdez is not, and sometimes these decisions are based those reasons rather than purely performance ones. Hopefully Acosta has turned the corner in his time at Gwinnett and can be a productive part of the Atlanta bullpen.

Can't say I'm uber-enthused
The one time I saw Acosta in Gwinnett this year, he gave up an inherited-runners loaded slam. I’m for one glad to know he threw the strike in that situation, but results are results.
Optimistically speaking, I’m hoping that due to the fact that Soriano and Gonzalez are behind him in the Bobby Order, he won’t feel nearly as much pressure to be the stellar set-up/closer type he was unjustly thrown into last season, and make some decent production.
IMO, I think he needs a few fresh, clean middle innings to find his bearings in the bigs again, and not being thrown right into an inferno immediately.

Let us hope that will be the case
The guy still makes me nerous every time he is on the mound.

He wasn’t bad in 2007 when he slotted behind Moylan and Soriano. I’m hoping that being in front of two solid relievers again will end in similar results.

Maybe this move won’t result in a face palm moment.

I saw Acosta twice this year; the first time, he pitched two very good scoreless innings before being run out for a third (it was the 12th inning) and giving up a walk-off homer to Adam Kennedy, the second time he was pretty lights out for an inning.
I’ll agree, I don’t really know if I trust him, and I’m definitely not excited about the move, but I think he can be better than Parr.

I actually like Acosta getting the call over Valdez. Valdez has a low ERA, but he’s also given up 8 unearned runs, and only 4 earned. He’s allowed a lot of runs, just hasn’t been on the hook for many. Acosta has been more effective so far. Gomez has probably been the best reliever at Gwinnett, but I don’t think they wanted another lefty.

I don’t know, I look at unearned runs and think that if the defense hadn’t screwed up, those guys wouldn’t even be out there, so I tend to not put much stock into them.

To some degree yes. I’m not going to say he should be held accountable for all of those runs. But just because the defense puts someone on, the pitcher still has to give up something to let them score. When a guy has twice as many unearned runs as runs, you certainly point a finger at the defense, but you also have to say that guy is allowing a lot more runs than his ERA is showing.
Sometimes the defense screws up and doesn’t get charged for an error too. Errors are so discretionary as it.
Acosta has given up too many long balls, but I still don’t see him getting teed off of like Parr has been lately. I think regardless of who we were calling up we were getting an upgrade, but I really don’t like Parr. A righty with as marginal stuff as he has that lives up in the zone the way he does is just asking for trouble. I just don’t think he can build a real big league career with the way he pitches.

as long as bobby doesn’t overuse him he should be fine. in the 5th and 6th innings i would rather see him trot out and buddy stay on the bench.

Uh...
Luis Valdez IS on the 40-man roster, so that doesn’t explain the Braves’ choice of Acosta.
The Braves are saying they made the move because Parr threw enough pitches against Colorado that he wouldn’t be available for the next few days anyway, so they wanted someone they could use. Let’s hope they get Parr back into starting; his peripherals were really solid while he was up, and he could be yet another guy to deserve a shot at that #5 starter’s job.

His peripherals don’t fully account for all the dents the Rox put in our OF wall while he was pitching.

Wow. Good call on Valdez. I absolutely should have known that, seeing that I did his player preview back in March, because he was on the 40-man. Thanks for correcting me.
