Around SBN: L'Equipe Claims He's Coming To Chelsea On Five Year Deal

Open Thread 5/22: Blue Jays @ Braves

Sweet, we get to play the best team in baseball tonight in our first interleague matchup of the season. AND we get throw arguably our worst starting pitcher (so far this season) against one of the best pitchers in baseball.

How do we have a losing record at home? If we just broke even at home we would be leading the dvision by like 2 games. Maybe tonight is the night we start to turn this around. Maybe tonight is the night Kawakami rediscovers his command!

♦ Livin’ large: Kawakami hasn’t quite lived up to expectations yet, but the dude’s livin’ large. First, he bought a mansion in the north Atlanta suburbs that had belonged to rapper Bow Wow. And last week, Kawakami bought a black Maserati.
Anyone who’s met Kawakami and talked to him (albeit through a translator, as K.K. speaks very little English) would probably smile while conjuring an image of this seemingly shy, soft-spoken Japanese pitcher living in Bow Wow’s old crib and driving a shiny new Maserati.
"Yeah, he’s straight gangsta," reliever Peter Moylan said of Kawakami. (Moylan was smiling when he said that.)

I hope people realize KK is a pretty good pitcher and with the exception of one awful start, has been at least decent in every start.

if dude would just cut down on the walks (which i’m sure he’ll eventually do on a consistent basis, given his stellar control in japan), i think he’ll be just fine

Absolutely.

by Zeus12888 on May 22, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

i understand the idea behind "small ball" and all

but why does bobby basically lay down and play scared anytime we face a dominant pitcher?

by get swoll yunel on May 22, 2009 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

additionally

for a guy that is so renowned as a “player’s manager”, he obviously has no confidence whatsoever in kelly johnson.

which is bizarre.

by get swoll yunel on May 22, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

KJ is also a very good bunter.

by mdhenshaw on May 22, 2009 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure bobby’s behind the lay down and play scared thing… I think that’s just a natural aspect of this current lineup.

by mdhenshaw on May 22, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

bobby is always trying to lay down bunts against great pitchers early in games in misguided attempts to try and eek out runs to gain a small lead.

or he’ll play the infield in when the other team has a one run lead very early in the game.

he’s been doing stuff like that for years.

kotch had a hell of a stretch too.

he also threw it low, and Kotchman had to dig it out

He’s made a few errors, but not on plays like that. He’s also made some great plays recently, taking away doubles and throwing the runner out from his knees.

OMG. Koch and Prado deserve a steak dinner courtesy of Gonzo.

by NCChopper on May 22, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Prado gets a steak for almost botching the play?

by Lennox on May 22, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

For sticking with one and keeping his wits to FINISH the play.

by NCChopper on May 22, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Good for him and all, but saying that Gonzo should buy him a steak is implying that he bailed Gonzo out, when, in actuality, he was bailing himself out.

by Lennox on May 22, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s one way to look at it, and a valid point.

We could also say that Prado/Koch bailed Gonzo out for giving up the double and having to pitch with a guy on 3rd with a 1 run lead.

by NCChopper on May 22, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

PRADO!!!

i love you.
