Game 23 Recap: Astros 5, Braves 1

This was kind of a crappy game... no offense to speak of and one bad fielding inning combined with so-so pitching. Another rain delay, this one an hour and a half, and Jair Jurrjens only got in one inning, but so did opposing starter Roy Oswalt. Unfortunately, even with Oswalt out of the game the Braves could not score enough runs to win the game. We had runners on in just about every inning, but today the RISP ability was not there.

There have been a lot of games like this in the Braves 2009 season, and for us to become a contending team we are going to have to start turning these kinds of games into wins.

Jordan Schafer was finally put in the leadoff spot and responded somewhat with two hits, but failed the overall test with two pickoffs and three strikeouts. Still, I think we should keep him up there. Kelly Johnson was back hitting lower in the lineup and responded with a 2-for-3 day and a walk -- he seems so much more at ease lower in the batting order.

But you’re right. This game pretty much sucked. At least Kelly found some life and Schafer got a couple of hits in the lead-off spot.

I still think that we are going to have to find a middle of the order bat sometime this season. Our offense is very streaky some games we score 7 or 8 runs and others we can only get 1. Schafer should be able to adjust to the leadoff spot and Escobar batting second is good. Chipper is as good of a third hitter as anyone but with no one batting behind him he gets pitched around a lot and he can’t be counted on to play everyday. McCann is a good enough number 4 hitter but he’s a catcher and will have to have days off.
My hope is that the A’s fall out of contention and we are able to trade for Holliday. We should have enough money to resign him at the end of the season. I don’t think that he will cost that much in terms of prospects and would be worth the price.

What makes you think that? Billy Beane will get everything he can from Holliday.

Anyways…how bad were the two errors Chipper made? How bad were the two pickoffs of Logan? I couldn’t watch the game cause of stupid Fox.

I think that Holliday would cost one good pitching prospect and atleast 2 or 3 add on players. I would think that Locke, Morton, Parr, and a low level positional prospect would get him. The A’s are going to realize that they won’t be able to resign him at the end of the season but for them to make the trade they would have to be convinced that what they were getting in return is more than the players they would get with the two draft picks they will receive for him. Of coarse if we were sure that we couldn’t resign him then I wouldn’t even consider the trade.

We’d have no shot at keeping him. Boras is his agent, the Yankees are going to have Matsui, Damon, and Nady coming off the books, it’s pretty simple math.
