Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/16

Seems like a lot of big performances from our big players tonight. I am ok with this.

Gwinnett 4, Lehigh Valley 1 - Final 8 Innings

  • B. Jones 2-4 2B, RBI
  • B. Conrad 1-2 HR(5), BB
  • T. Hanson 7IP 2H 0R 1BB 7K

Ho humm, just another outing by Tommy Hanson. The good thing is he is getting a litte more efficient with his outings. He threw 94 in this one and maybe could have gone a couple more innings. Medlen threw 1/3 of an inning in this one giving up one run but the game was called due to rain. I guess he was just getting some work before he actually gets his start in Atlanta.

Mississippi 12, Montgomery 1

  • G. Hernandez 3-5 2B, 2RBI, BB, CS(5), PO
  • W. Cabrera 3-6 2B, 5RBI, K
  • JC Boscan 3-5 2 2B, 3RBI, K
  • C. Rodriguez 3-5 HR(1), 2RBI, K

This is the kind of offense I expect from this team! It was all kind of bunched up between these 4 guys though. Hernandez is having a great season but he really needs to learn the bases a little better; two outs on the paths is just unacceptable with his speed and talent. Also, Jorge Campillo made a rehab start going 2 scoreless innings.

Potomac 2, Myrtle Beach 6

  • R. Marcial 2-4 HR(1), 2RBI
  • J. Heyward 2-4 HR(7), 2RBI
  • C. Johnson 1-4 2B, 2K

Jason Heywar has pushed his OPS back up over .900 on the season and has homered 3 times in his last 4 games. Remember last year he only hit 11 on the season. At this rate he will have that by the middle of next month, if not sooner. He also played CF tonight which tells me his hammy is probably feeling better.

Rome 4, Greenville 0

  • G. Rodriguez 2-4 2B, RBI
  • JJ Hoover 8.1IP 7H 0R 1BB 5K
  • C. Kimbrel 0.2IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K

There really are some talented arms in the Rome rotation this year. Hooever might have the best combination of stuff and control. He only has 3 BB on the season and he induces groudballs consistently to go along with a solid K rate. Tonight was his best start of the season and his ERA is sitting at 2.27. He and Spruill at the very least give us a couple of solid arms at this level.

He hasn’t pitched since Tuesday, and is making his ML debut next Tuesday. That would have been 7 days without work. Tonight was his original start night.

Conrad’s homer was absolutely tattooed. If there wasn’t a screen in right field, it would have went into one of the parking lots.

He absolutely pissed on the one he hit here in Norfolk. I guess when he hits them, they stay hit.

I think Gorkys PO/CS was the same out because I only saw him make 1 out on the base paths. Also, the Biscuits hit some nice gappers that he made into routine plays. His D is just as good as Jordan’s, if not better.

What about his throwing arm? Schafer has a plus arm which is you want in CF.

I’m wondering if the Braves’ OF of the (very near?) future isn’t Heyward in right, Schafer in center and GH in left.

Gorkys has a good arm...

though not as good as Schafer’s.

It's a sweep!

Well…except for the big club. But, it’s hard not to get really excited about some of these players!

Also, despite Hanson only throwing 90 pitches, it seemed to me like he was throwing a lot…he fell behind a few hitters before making them look REALLY stupid

Good to see Heyward developing that power we all heard about.

Question

ok Gorkys is supposed to have game changing speed but has 8 SB and 5 CS. thats not a very good ratio. He is havin a tremendous season this year, i have always liked him so its no surprise to me but the SB/CS ratio is a surprise to me though. I think with his speed he should easily have 15 SB at this point and at most 6 CS. I understood last year with his hamstring pretty much botherin him most of the year the steals weren’t there but not sure why they aren’t now. So im just curious why he has gotten caught so many times(maybe it was a very good throwing catchers from the opponent, i have no idea).

Dunno, one of the last things to come with speed guys though is the ability to learn pitcher tendencies and not just rely on their raw speed to get from A to B. And I imagine learning tendencies is difficult moving from league to league in the minors. Lots of speed guys have a lot of CS in the minors simply because they don’t know all the nuances with basestealing, but once they get to the majors they refine it (hopefully) and their SB% goes up.

Good point about that. I really didn't think about that, but thats a good point. He keeps havin a good year in AA he might get called up to AAA by July or possibly sooner.

The thing that’s unusual is that in past seasons, Gorkys has had really good SB%. The most times he’s ever been caught was 11 times and that was the year he stole 54 bases. Of course, he’s facing pitchers who are starting to really develop pick-off moves and catchers who are starting to grasp the catching and throwing aspect of their game and that’s certainly something to consider, but I hope the hamstring injury isn’t having any lingering effects, mental or physical.

If you project the numbers he’s on pace for, in 500 at-bats he’d have 26 stolen bases with 16 caught stealings. Not good.

So...

I just figured out fangraphs does minor leaguers and well… along with feeling stupid, I’m pretty happy about it.
