Open Thread 5/13 - Braves @ Mets
Atlanta Braves at New York Mets, May 13, 2009 1:10 PM EDT
Alright, lets see how this turns out. Its my first ever mainpage post~! Awesome.
Braves look to salvage the series today and finish the roadtrip at 6-2, which would be a huge boost to the team. With the Diamondbacks & Rockies coming up at home, we can really pick up some ground on the rest of the division and get into a great spot to make a move. Ironically enough, we're 3 games over .500 on the road, and 4 games under at home.
With this team right now, the pitching isn't the problem...the problem is the offense, specifically the outfield and their 7 homers on the season. The infield has really been turning it on lately, especially Escobar & Kotchman, and they're the main reason that we haven't had an abundance of Santana-esque decisions for our starters this trip.
Jojo Reyes on the hill for the Braves today, and its been an odd season for him. One great start, and 2 where he was cruising along just fine until his headcaseyness struck again and the big inning happened. Lets see what he can do today against Johnathan Niese

Nice 1st summary, but...
The Mets are sending out Jonathon Niese and not Maine onto the hill? An epic matchup of No. 5 vs. No. 5?
epic win
i work at a therapuetic school (go figure) and often our teachers, therapists, AND staff will use “EPIC FAIL” as a battle cry, taunt, etc…..
SO – currently, there are probably a handful of computers in this school with a background of a hilarious EPIC FAIL doosy (my fav is the flaming fire truck personally).
BUT – yesterday, at a painful baseball game where our troopers lost by 30+ runs, one kid got a fat base hit, and was screaming “EPIC WIN! EPIC WIN!!!”
classic.
He’s been hyped to the moon in recent years and hasn’t delivered yet.

Has anyone really hyped up Jojo though?

what he said
Heard lots of good things about him a few years ago…and even now, you can tell the stuff’s there, he’s just, as you said, a headcase.
WHAT THE HELL, BOBBY?
1. Infante, 2B
2. Escobar, SS
3. Chipper, 3B
4. Anderson, LF
5. Diaz, RF
6. Prado, 1B
7. Ross, C
8. Schafer, CF
9. Reyes, LHP
Oh, Bobby.
No, and that's a good thing.
But the Braves are off Thursday and McCann is well rested from his DL stint. Why sit him?
MARTIN PRADO is not a first baseman!
Oh, Bobby.
I’m wondering why he didn’t sit last night and play this afternoon against the lefty.

Thank the leader, no Francoeur. What do you think of FAIL-coeur?
If Dunn walks 30 fewer times, he'll drive in 15 more runs. This is thanks to the scientifically proven formula: RBI = (this is nonsense) (I made it all up).
Here's a stat: Wins as manager: Dusty Baker, 1,162; Bill James, 0.

I usually don't comment on the lineup...
…but this one just looks stupid. I can see Frenchy being out (definitely) — maybe even giving Ross a start, but I think you gotta leave the hottest guy on the team in the lineup (Kotchman), as well as KJ, who needs ABs to continue to work his way out of his funk.
Kotch has been hitting LH well this year too. No power, but he’s hitting plenty of singles against them.
by Smoltz's Beard on May 13, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
KJ, on the other hand, has been murdering LH pitchers: .970 OPS.

His stats are actually better against righties

Obviously…he’s crushing righties. I’m just saying that Kotch is showing the ability to get on base against lefties so far this year as well.

Bold prediction of the day.
JoJo will be dropped from the starting rotation after this game.
Really, I’m hoping he is sent packing up up I-85 to GBravesLand.
I’m not really sure that’s such a bold prediction after his last start. I will say that I don’t think it happens, though. Huge ballpark, struggling Mets lineup, and Jerry Manual thinking that their rookie catcher is good at baseball make for a promising game.
Having said all that, if he gives up even a single HR today I would not be opposed to sending him back down.
And we start whom? Morton? Armas? We won’t see Hanson until after 6/1.
What’s Campillo’s status?

I asked KLaw a question in his chat today, and it got answered, so here it what he has to say about Schafer
Eric (Northampton, PA): What do you make of Jordan Schafer so far? His strikeouts are out on control.
SportsNation Keith Law: (12:10 PM ET ) They rushed him, badly, and it’s no surprise to anybody. He’s great defensively, but I think there’s always a chance with a hitter who’s rushed like this that he won’t quite recover at the plate. They rushed Francoeur, and he’s gotten worse every day since 2005.

I hate that. I am in a mens league and some dudes take it way seriously. They have Utrip bats painted to look like ASA bats so that they can hit the ball harder.

I played in a league where one team had a guy who was a former Birmingham Barons White Sox prospect. And he was a serious fellow.

Yeah, we have a few of those. But come on, painting a bat so that the ball can come off at 120 mph instead of 98 mph??? It is BS.

Usually not.
Thats why it made no sense to want to quit. Usually we’re pulling people out of the stands to have enough. This was the one game where we had 12 or 13 show up.

We score 6 runs to get his lame ass off the hook, and we can barely get half that whenever JJ pitches…
I think the mindstate that the offense takes before the game is that they know they HAVE to score runs when Jo Jo is pitching to have any chance to win.
