Game 31 Recap: Braves 8, Mets 3

The Braves got the better of the Mets, and Johan Santana, and the middle of the Mets bullpen, and the Mets defense... especially the Mets defense. The Braves had plenty of baserunners that they couldn't get home -- we left 11 runners on base, and were only 5-for-17 with runners in scoring position. But we had enough and we had plenty of help.

The first five runs the Braves scored were unearned thanks to errors from David Wright and especially Jose Reyes, who had a ball go through his legs that should have been the final out of what turned out to be a 4-run inning. Really, couldn't have happened to a better person.

The Braves were Larry-less for the opening game of the series with Chipper nursing a hyperextended elbow. The rest of the lineup picked up the slack with four guys collecting multiple hits -- most of them coming off the middle of the Mets pen. Brian McCann had the only extra base hit, a double, for the Braves. The other 15 hits were singles.

Derek Lowe had the hard sinker working, getting 15 ground-outs versus just 4 fly-outs and 1 strikeout. His six and two-thirds outing was extremely economical throwing just 95 pitches (almost two-thirds for strikes). The Mets seemed to cooporate perfectly with Lowe's gameplan.

Moylan and Soriano put in some good bullpen work and Carlyle finished out the game despite getting roughed-up a bit.

Nice start to the series and more good work on this road-trip, in which the Braves are now 5-and-1. This win is special too, because we beat the best pitcher in baseball and one of the hottest teams over the past week.

a good win for the Braves

And I too thought it was great to see Reyes boot the grounder up the middle that “could of” ended the inning.

But I have to say that I watched the game mostly on mute because those ESPN announcer could not be riding the Mets “you know what” throughtout the game. It was so fricken’ sickening, especially that pitcher guy Orel Hershiser.

I was flipping back between SportSouth and ESPN (occasinally because I knew the latter would suck....

…..and it’s Chip and Joe for life, you know? As opposed to a bunch of Mets brown-nosers.) I would always turn to ESPN after big plays, and instead of any praise for the Almighty Braves, all I heard was the fools focusing on what the Mets needed to do to win, as if their worthless piece-of-shit opinions really mattered. I would have watched the game on mute as well. They’re always talking down to the Braves, and I think that kind of arrogant idiocy adds fuel to the fire. Remember, nobody expected us to won this game. Everybody got a shot to the face, and on national tv nonetheless. We’ve won 5 of last 6.

Lol, the Braves have a small, side blurb on ESPN.com….20 bucks says the fuckers already had a shot of Santana picked out for the “W,” scrapped it, and began work of the “A-Rod Come-back Story” page. Rot in hell. Suck on that, you crazy, Dutch bastards. Inside rumor: the Mets are gay……and are possibly sleeping with the Yankees!!!?!??!!!!

It made me sick.

I hate Chip Caray’s faggy ass so I was watching ESPN. Those guys acted like the Mets were playing a fat-boy league softball team. The bias is unreal. PAY ATTENTION, FOOLS! The Braves are for real.

I’ll stick with Chip next time.

Oh, Bobby.

Chip cracks me up. But it's not Joe and Boog.....they are the best duo around(.)

I love how Chip always talks thru his laughter, and he laughs pretty easily. Always trying to stay professional. They had fun (but Joe and Boog always have a TON of fun. You missed a good energy if you forcefed thru that ESPMETS bullshit. They can all choke on a dick. The Bravos are coming back whether they want it to happen or not.

I love Chip for only ONE reason

He’s related to the great Skip.

Besides that, I could careless about all the Wrigley field crap he’ll bring up throughout games. “If we were in Wrigley Field, that ball would of carried out”. OMG “The wind is playing tricks today, just like it does in Wrigley”. OMFG

I thought it was funny hearing some of Steve Phillips comments during the game

“Nobody on the Brave’s roster has great speed” or something along those lines. Ok, but we do have some players that have good speed and I think it’s a bit of a low blow to say we play station to station baseball. And it’s not like you need atleast one with blistering speed to go all the way (just look at the Sox in ’07).

I also think the Braves would not of gotten any praise during tonight’s game IF Lowe was not a former Red Sox pitcher. Now that I say that, I guarantee they wouldn’t and that is SAD.

Steve Philips said something to this effect yesterday, “The Mets have a lineup full of guys that are just consistantly doing something wrong everyday” Sounds a little bitter to me

And may I add this

Soriano is quietly pitching like his ‘07 self so far (probably even better). My only fear is that Bobby will use him too much and he’ll start to break down when we need him most.

Anyway, I think it’s safe to say he’s been the team’s most consistent pitcher and honestly the best too.

by RaffyGonzo on May 11, 2009 10:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m concerned about the fact that he seems to be relying on his Fastball so much almost as if his secondary pitches (Slider and Changeup) arent coming out so well.

Anyway i feel he will get more downtime once Moylan gets into a bit of a groove. Also you cant really blame bobby he saw his bullpen melt down a few times this year and a lot last year so the last thing he wants to do is give up late inning leads. he just doesnt trust anyone outside of Moylan, Soriano, and Gonzo. He seems to be taking to EOF and the kid has been dealing lately but outside of them we dont really have anyone to consistently perform well

He struck out Reyes on a sick offspeed pitch…with the amount of fastballs he throws I was as surprised as Reyes was.

Kind of like deja vu

We’re sadly getting used to badly managed situations, that it’s weird to see the other guy botch a no-brainer situation, while meanwhile if anything, Bobby is over-managing the game, by having Mike Gonzalez warming up from the slightest sign of trouble out of Buddy. It would’ve taken two runs to plate before it could even have the chance to be a save situation.

IMO, we won that game in the first inning. We got a run on the board and forced Santana to throw nearly 30 pitches.

Good teams take advantage of run scoring opportunities. Great baserunning by Escobar to score on the Wright throw. Kotchman continues to rake. Diaz is back to form and pummeling lefties. If Shafer eventually figures out how to make contact, the Braves could be real tough.

The team is starting to look good. Theres a lot of talk about K-Rod and Putz, but I think the Braves have as good an 7-8-9 combination as you can find in baseball.

by kalesi on May 12, 2009 11:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve been saying that I like Gonzalez and Soriano more than Putz and K-Rod for a while now. I’d like to see the Mets actually put Putz after K-Rod for just one day and see what happens. I imagine massive whining.

Not only do Gonzo and Soriano allow for the splits, they understand their roles in the bullpen, and trust that one can close out the other on any given night given the scenario. Neither will whine, but both do require a close game to get that all-important adrenaline running to be at optimum performance. To see two guys earn 15-20 saves in a single season would be a pleasant sight.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Anyone know what the chemistry is between them? Are they friends?

by Smoltz's Beard on May 12, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s a good question – you kind of have to wonder who Soriano’s friends even are, because the guy is so scary intense during the game, it’s hard to imagine anything outside of serial premeditated murder on his mind at any given time. The fact that he does that little hop over the base line after an inning is weird enough given his extreme persona.

But Gonzalez was on the radio pregame yesterday saying that he doesn’t mind going in the 8th because he fully trusts Soriano behind him in the 9th, and the utmost importance is still the win, not stats.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I was wondering the same thing last night. What does the rest of the team think of Soriano? He was a little more wild than usual last night, going to several 3-0 counts, and I kept waiting for McCann to run out to the mound to calm him down a little bit but it almost looked like he was scared to. I can’t blame him, I’d be terrified to look at him in the face let alone talk to him and try to tell him something.

by Uninvited on May 12, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly

I don’t really care what the other teammates think of him, as long as he remains the reliable, intimidating late-game pitcher he is now.

I can’t find the exact link, but there was a brief story about Soriano during 2007, about how he was such an intense guy, and that he would sometimes just stare intently at anything to maintain his focus. Bobby once walked in on him staring at a hole in the concrete wall once, looking like he was going will it to close up or something.

He doesn’t speak much English either, and I get the impression that he’s voluntarily distant from the rest of the squad. There are no other Dominican players on the squad for him to really buddy up to or feel at home with, let alone very few Spanish speaking guys.

But whatever, he keeps pulling through, all Braves fans will still love him.

I see Gonzalez making it back over Soriano. Soriano just looks so indifferent, and I’m sure someone out there is going to pay premium dollar for a 94-95mph reliever, that the Braves won’t be able to match.

Soriano brings good control and slightly better velocity than Gonzo, whose non-save performances and penchant for slightly more wildness than Soriano will be his disadvantage.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Money

Soriano is costing the Braves a little more than $6 mil, and Gonzalez avoided arb and signed for $3.45 mil, so both are in their walk-years, right now. While it’s awesome now, and I would love nothing more than to see both remain Braves through next year and beyond, I just have a feeling that someone is going to make a Kyle Farmsworth-to the-Yankees kind of offer to Soriano and/or Gonzalez, that neither will be able to resist.

Also, who’s to say that during the stretch run, one of them will be traded to be a rental for another contender, for a potential bat and/or prospect?

This always cracks me up...

From FJM’s Glossary of Terms:

VORP (Value Over Replacement Player)
An offensive stat only, VORP attempts to calculate the number of runs a player is contributing above what a replacement-level player at the same position would if given the same percentage of team plate appearances. VORP is a counting stat, not a percentage stat – so, for example, as of July 22, Andruw Jones has a VORP of 31.0. That means that he has created 31 more runs for his team than the average AAA call-up guy would have by this point in the season. It also turns out that every ten runs a player creates is worth roughly one win, so Andruw’s offense alone has earned the Braves three wins. (There are other stats, like Fielding Runs Above Average [FRAA] that do the same thing as VORP, for defense.) See WARP below for more.

Old Baseball Men, this is another good one to bandy about if you’re interested in tearing down a nerd’s argument. Because it sounds funny. VORP. Please. What’s that doing in baseball? Forget VORP, let’s come up with a stat for the size of a guy’s heart, am I right, people? We’ll call it the Eckstein Quotient. No, wait, that sounds too nerdy. Eckstein Number. Nope. Still too smart. Eckstein Thing. How about just Thing? The highest Thing in the majors? You guessed it: David Eckstein. That’s why they almost named it after him.

It would be real ironic if a “heart” guy like Eckstein, Andy Sonnanstine, Josh Fogg, or whomever is really discovered to have an actual, medical enlarged heart.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

I actually spent 20 minutes there on Sunday looking for the article about opening day last year. I found it.

"If on-base percentage is so important, then why don't they put it up on the scoreboard?"
