Braves sign Armas
I hadn't noticed this, so it could have happend a while ago, but the Braves have signed Tony Armas to a minor league contract. He actually started for Mississippi Friday night, throwing a scoreless 4.2 innings, and was promoted to Gwinnett today.
You might have once known him as Tony Armas Jr., but, as he will very quickly point out, he has a different middle name than his father, former ML OF Tony Armas. The younger Armas pitched for the Expos/Nationals from 99 to 06, for the Pirates in 07, and the Mets in 08, compiling a 53-65 record with a 4.65 ERA in 185 games (167 starts).
We all know Gwinnett is very deep in starting pitching, but it never hurts to have another arm.

Yeah, I remember hearing that a lot. Looking at some of his numbers with the Expos before he got hurt, he was a very good pitcher. His ERA was inflated by playing for an awful team, which is why his W-L record is so bad, but he was always a good pitcher. It’ll be interesting to see what we can get out of him.

I mentioned this in the live thread, seeing it in the M-Braves box on Friday…and I laughed, and laughed, and laughed…

Why not? Low risk, high reward signing.
The Braves front office doesn’t exactly have a long track record of missing on signing pitchers. It may kind of support that Atlanta isn’t quite ready to expose their young hurlers to the MLB just yet.

Hampton had a couple of solid seasons before his body started exploding one part at a time.

We also weren’t paying his full salary those seasons either. Thanks Florida!

This
Armas used to have a very good arm before it was trashed in Montreal.
The epitome of a Low cost, high reward move. Come to think of it, we need an acronym for that. I vote for LOCHIR.

Just call it “LOCH” so we can say shit like “Tony Armas reeks of LOCHness,” which will usher a new era of reclamation players whom everyone can call their own LOCHness monsters.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
