Angels' Pitcher Killed in Car Accident

Angels' pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed along with two others in a car accident last night in a hit and run. Adenhart was 22 years old and fresh off the best performance of his promising young career. A mini-van struck Adenhart's vehicle while running a red light. The driver of the mini-van is in custody after he was caught attempting to flee on foot.

This news isn't exactly Braves-related but its a major story in baseball. I send my  condolences to Adenhart's family and friends, the Angels organization, and the families of the others killed in the accident.

I forgot to add that to the post but I edited it so that everyone would know.

He has a life, too. Who knows what he was struggling with. Prayers go out to him as well. He can’t be having his best day today.

He shouldn’t have been drinking and speeding through red lights.

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

drinking?

I havent read in any report that he was drinking (tho it sounds like he might have).

Ill be honest, there have been times, esp late at night/early morning, when i’ve accidentally run a red light or stop sign…it could have been an honest mistake..

Still, he shouldnt have fled the scene.

by Doghnut on Apr 9, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough. Maybe it’s not fair to condemn the guy without hearing the real story, but yes…he shouldn’t have fled.

Some people over at Halos Heaven say he has been charged with DUI, but there are no links to support it. Apparently there is a press conference right now so we may learn more from that.

Follow up

According to this article, the driver will indeed be brought up on drinking-related charges.

Also, the Angels/A’s game today has been postponed.

Prayers do go out to him as well

but I hope justice is served. Everyone makes mistakes but fleeing the scene of a violent accident is selfish and callous.

That’s just terrible. I really feel for his family and the organization.

I see that at least one TC regular has stopped by Halos Haven to offer condolences. It looks like they’re coming in from other SNB blogs as well. Very nice.

This is one ray of good

When it really counts, all people react as people, and not sports fans. Team allegiances are set aside for words of encouragement, from person to person.

I’ve been reading the thread for a while now. Just don’t really know what to say. I literally cannot imagine how I would take something like this.

Nice Quote from Torri Hunter

“I think we’re going to get together, that’s what [manager] Mike [Scioscia] does. We’ll talk about what we need to do about helping the family out. Forget us, I worry about his family. That’s real love right there. Baseball is temporary.”

So sad to hear this...

Wasn’t their a trade rumor involving Adenhart and the Braves last season?

God Bless Nick, his family, and the others involved in the horrible accident.

Good thing we didn’t trade for him then. Wasn’t there an NFL player who just did a hit and run?

Donte Stallworth…but he didn’t run, he actually cooperated with the police. He was drunk too.

Well, obviously the circumstances would have been different...

such as being all the way in Georgia instead of that particular street in California.

Or maybe it was his time to go, IDK how it all works out…

wow very sad

it is great to see everyone put aside baseball to come together like they have for the Angles and the family, but it is a shame that it takes something as tragic as this for people to realize that it is just a game, and that life is much more than baseball.

Since I am out on the west coast I have comcast sports net (kind of like peachtree I think) and I watched the game last night, he was good. He was probably out celebrating with friends and family after his great game. This is so sad, I feel for his family and the Angels organization.

According to people on HH the driver was a multiple offender and driving on a suspended license. Fuck that guy.

Manslaughter, DUI, Hit-and-Run, suspended license, and he’s mysteriously been 22-years old for the last two years.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

by royhobbs on Apr 9, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Is that his resume? Because they’re saying he’s being charged with straight up murder. Unless the person on HH is incorrect.
