PrintWell all those detractors who doubted my reserations pre season about the bullpen, where are you now ?
Today's bullpen meltdown was both as forseeable as it was unforgiveable as it was unprofessional ! Walking runners with the bases loaded ? CONSECUTIVELY ? Resulting in a 7 run swing wiping out a 6 run lead ?
Well, at least our future opponents now know to keep it close until our starter pitcher is relieved cuz then they will almost certainly win, and by a hefty margin too against our apathetic bullpen! Solution? Send EVERY pitcher who today walked a batter with the bases loaded DOWN to AAA, no make that AA ball to learn how to PITCH IN THE STRIKE ZONE! At least THAT way, you give your defense the opportunity to make plays behind you rather than walking in run after run after run after run with NO competitive effort!
I'm sorry, but the Braves bullpen owes US, the Braves fans a PUBLIC apology for the pathetic display they put up today! Will it happen ? Of course not; they'll just collect their multi million dollar paychecks and wait for the next opportunity to throw the game away!

this is absolutely one of the worsts posts in the history of this site and your failure as a poster has made us all dumber by association. May God have mercy on your soul.
I think that some time is going to be needed get the kinks worked out. Moylan missed most of last year so hopefully he can get back into the grove and be fine. Boyer is a guy that I’ve never been that impressed with. He throws hard but can’t get outs consistently. I think Soriano and Gonzalez will be fine but I could see a trade later in the season for a middle reliever.

Listen, that was dissapointing today. Very rarely is an entire bullpen bad on the same day. Walks are inexcusable (though it did look like Phillies pitchers were getting calls the Braves weren’t). I was in the stands a few years ago when Smoltz came in and gave up 9 runs to the Mets in the 9th inning while trying to close one out. It happens.
However, I see it like this. The Braves and Phillies played 27 innings this week. Braves pitching flat dominated the best lineup in the NL for 26 of them.
At this level, guys aren’t supposed to walk batters with regularity. However, I’ve seen these pitchers enough to know that is the exception rather than the rule. The bullpen is fine. Had a bad game. It happens. Not winning the game hurts, but in baseball you aim for taking the series. We did that. Now we go try put some lumps on Washington.
There was a lot good to take from the series, most importantly how good the ATL starters looked and how we just put an 11 spot against Philly without Jones in the lineup.

Nothing to back it up ? Try previous seasons performance stats for one thing. Howeer, I must admit I had absolutely NO idea just how weak our bullpen really wsa until today! And let’s face something here; even HIGH SCHOOL pitchers are taught, pitch to the strike zone and let your defense make the plays behind you. These are so called PROFESSIONAL pitchers that were out there today, and there is absolutely NO excuse for successive bases loaded walks, I’m sorry!

At the professional level you do not pitch to contact. You FOOL players into swinging at BAD pitches. This isnt Rec League softball where you just lob beach balls for players to hack at and hope they hit it to your defense. This is the BIG SHOW where you make players miss. Most players wont miss strikes – they miss pitches outside of the zone.
Yes, a pitcher has to throw strikes to win, but he isnt supposed to throw to let the offense connect (unless he is a gb pitcher like D Lowe)

Actually, pitching to contact is one of the essential, basic tools of the game. Most guys just have shitty stuff and can’t do it.

Pitching to contact for the hitter to hit how and where the pitcher wants (a la D Lowe) is one thing…just throwing a strike and letting the hitter connect is entirely different. I believe that daveywilliams is referring to the latter and not the former.

I actually just dusted it off after a long hiatus. Annex/KOTH is just too damn fun, and the new ranking system is better than what they had before.
I tried the RSV2 demo and wasn’t all that impressed, but demo’s don’t always reflect positively on the game itself.

1 terrible inning out of 27 and we suck dick all of a sudden? Come on now Davey. We DOMINATED the Phillies all of game one and two and dominated all the way up to the 7th. And its not like the Phillies are a scrub team; they have 22/25 players back from the world series championship team. Just an FYI if ya didnt know…
If we can win 2 outta 3 from the Phillies every game the rest of the way ill be ecstatic. That would put us around 12-6 against the defending champs.

I would have been more upset if the Phillies had even been hitting us hard. They had a few nice singles in the 7th, but nothing hit particularly hard. Granted, you simply cannot walk batters at the major league level and have a lot of success, but it would worry me a lot more if our guys were throwing batting practice out there. I know they can throw strikes. I’ve seen em do it.

I laugh but this happend last year with one of the mariners blogs. They sent a letter to the manager about King Felix throwing his fastball too much early in the game. They took the email to him and he went out and threw like 7 innings of 1 hit ball. He mentioned the letter after the game
