ESPN WTF!!!

I really don't get the espn guys. Not one of them picked our effin Fantastic Braves team to win the NL east nor did the MLB network. Yeah I know the Phills won the world series last year, and they basically have the same line up and rotation they had a year ago. But what do the Phills have after Hamles, and what do the Mets have after Johan. Do they really believe that Puttz and K Rod are the missing pieces to end the Mets failure to keep it together down the strecth, no, how will they if they dont have the opportunity. I am not saying the Mets rotation sucks nor am I saying the Phills rotation sucks, but their rotations do not have the depth that the Braves have and are an injury away from experiencing what the Braves went through last year. I do believe the Braves need improvement on one thing though and that is our lefty dominated line up. It seemed like every batter was left handed tonight. What are the espn guys smoking though not even including us in the division or wild card!!! Petter Gammons said he guess that the Muts will win because of their Bullpen. When has a bullpen ever won a damn pennant. The Braves will win the east end of story because

If Glavine goes down

Glavine-Jo Jo reyes starts

If K.K fails

 Hanson starts

J.J. gets a dead arm and feels a little fatigue and needs a break

Campillo starts

The depth we have is stupendous so to ESPN the Braves will be the NL east champs and retake our banner.

Peter Pascarelli,Jason Grey, and Orel Hershisher all called us either for a wild card or darkhorse pick. They all work for ESPN. Jason Stark picked us to win the WS last year, may have made them all a little cautious after last year.

Just because

no one on ESPN on all places picked us, doesn’t mean we can’t win. Who on ESPN picked the Rays last year to finish any higher than 4th?

And ESPN’s Peter Gammons picked us to go to the World Series… (I haven’t read the rest of the thread, so hope this isn’t a repeat).

Skip Bayless just chose the Braves to lose to the Red Sox in the World Series (about what I have as well)…

Say what you will about Skip (most people either love or hate him), but he is usually pretty good about long term predictions (had the phillies correct last year)…

by Doghnut on Apr 6, 2009 10:24 AM EDT reply actions

Anyone else out there that can’t stand Joe Morgan? My head was ringing last night with some of his commentary.

Case in point. Kotchman makes a great diving stab to his left, whirls and throws to a covering Lowe at the bag. Just a beautiful defensive baseball play by a first baseman. Morgan’s only comment was, “should have let the second basmen field that ball”

Then I had to sit and listen to how Francouer’s new stance leaves him susceptible to pulling inside pitches foul. Most hitters in baseball pull pitches foul. As if foul balls were some sort of out or something.

And then, talking about how Chipper Jones still has a hole on the belt high on the inside where he can’t get to pitches. The same #10 who was batting close to .400 for most of last season.

From FJM.com:

ESPN Writer that the Blogger is talking about:
“They have an experienced manager” (speaking on why the Rays would beat the Phils in the WS last year)

The Blogger’s response:
“Joe Maddon: 251-286 (537 total games). Never managed in the post-season before this year.
Charlie Manuel: 573-485 (1058 total games). Managed in the post-season twice before this year.
It took me 21 seconds to look that up.”

I love it!

hmmm.........A note of caution amid the euphoria

OK. 4-1 against the reigning world champs in THEIR stadium LOOKS good, but let’s take a deeper examination behind the number shall we?

ALL 4 runs came in the first 2 innings……sound familiar?
We failed to move runners along on base AFTER those 2 innings…sound familiar ?

Our Closer gave up a run and loaded the bases….sound familiar ?

Sure, great performance by Lowe, and WOW, nice welcome to the Bigs by Schaeffer, but sorry guys, outside of that I saw NOTHING last night that made me think we will finish higher than third in the div this year. AGAIN, a weak bullpen and AGAIN, we cannot advance runners in scoring position… same problems we’ve had for the last couple of years!

Yes, it’s nice to start off the season with a win, especially away from home against the reigning world champs, but that is just ONE game, and we will not face too many other teams with inadequate pitching the like of which the Phills put up last night; and unfortunately together with several other Braves fans watching last night we all saw the SAME problems that will probably rear their heads that happened during the last couple of seasons, Lowe, Chipper and Schaeffer notwithstanding.

Why have I been flagged as a “Hater” ?

I thought this blog was for intelligent discussion amongst adults about the Braves; INTELLIGENT discussion includes dissention based on logic, and my comment was based not just on MY opinion, but the comments made by other Braves fans who were ALSO watching the game with me, AND previous seasons performances at certain poitiions (i.e. relief pitching) and on the occurrence of situations during the game (i.e. runners on base).

Now if this blog does NOT allow for any such intelligent observations or discussion, then let me know and I’ll gladly disappear!

the plan was to B-E-A-GG-RE-SS-IVE. Heap said on the radio this morning that was the plan against Myers. I think we can be sure that at least Kelly, Chip, and Heap will take their walks. Schafer appears to be learning to take a walk. Whether thats enough or not remains to be seen.

by 10-4 on Apr 6, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, yes, there is some caution to be had. Will Brett Myers generally be that bad? No. He was throwing batting practice up there. Not one of those homer (Escobar’s double also) was one of those Aaron Rowand/Shane Victorino 350 ft. squeakers that Citizens Bank is known for. All of those guys tore the cover off the ball.

Yes, it is one game but not a single pitcher threw 8 shutout against the Phils in Philly last year. Not a single pitcher. The fact that the Braves put a starter out there who, in all honesty, made the best lineup in the NL look like they were a high school team says a lot. Not one single Philly was locked in. Lowe had six 1-2-3 innings for pete’s sake.

There’s no suprise that the Braves are going to have to win with pitching and defense (Hello Tampa Rays). I certainly don’t expect us to club 6 homers a game. However, we can win the way we played last night. Good starting pitching, good defense, and timely hitting. Gonzalez didn’t look great last night, but that double was an inch from not happening, the walk is inexcusable, but then he struck out two tough hitters with the game on the line. Was it as clean as we would have liked? No. Did he get the job done? Yes.

It's an overreaction to say we don't have a chance to win the division based on one game...

….just like it’s an overreaction to surmise we’ll win it all based on one game. It’s one game. But, it was a pretty enjoyable game, so why not just enjoy it? Actually, it was extremely enjoyable.

by Doghnut on Apr 6, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Bad analysis doesn’t really get on my nerves so much (to me, its not worse than the true but obvious analysis than anyone else on ESPN would give).
Jon Miller is just endlessly annoying. I feel like whenever the two can’t stop talking about something, it is usually Jon Miller who can’t move on, while Morgan just sort of agrees and is forced to respond to Miller’s repetitive comments. That was certainly the case last night with the slider/curveball discussion.
Don’t misunderstand me though, Morgan should not have a job either.

by eyy on Apr 6, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

On top of the fact that Jon Miller has no clue where to put emphasis on Hispanic names. he called Demaso Marte…. demaSO Marte (hopefully u get the emphasis)… he has never pronounced Perez correct (which is like Smith excpet in Spanish)

My favorite part about the Joe Morgan broadcast

was that how after the game was over, all he talked about was how good the Phillies were.

I give Steve Phillips props for finally saying “We can talk about the Phillies and the Mets all year long, but these Atlanta Braves aren’t going anywhere. They are a very good team who will be in this race in August”.

Or something to that effect…
