Jeff Francoeur: Atlanta Braves 2009 Player Preview

This player preview was written by Joe Lucia, who posts here as bigjoe.

Jeff Francoeur was really bad in 2008. Recently, I was curious as to how bad he was. So I did a little research (more than 20 seconds worth, actually), and came up with a starting conclusions. Jeff Francoeur's 2008 OPS was lower than any corner outfielder's in the past 10 years. That's...frightening to think about.

Francoeur has always been the golden child in Atlanta, growing up locally, playing nearly all of his minor league ball in the south, and of course, his career with the Braves. One thing about Jeff though, is that he has always seemed to lack the ability to lay off bad pitches. In his 3 and a half year career, he's averaged 128 strikeouts and 34 walks, a stellar BB:K of .266. There was a glimmer of hope last season, as his strikeouts slightly decreased and his walks remained relatively constant. Only thing about that is his is power fell off a cliff and his BABIP got hit by a bus, rendering him nearly useless with a bat in his hands.

But then something happened to Jeff this offseason. He started hanging out with Rudy Jaramillo for a little bit, then listened to Chipper for some hitting tips. And this spring...he's been a much different player. In 62 spring at bats, he's got more walks than strikeouts. Of course, he also has less extra base hits than Brooks Conrad, Greg Norton, Matt Diaz, and Clint Sammons. Jeff's on base problem may be solved, but the lack of improvement in his power is a huge red flag. If his power continues to stay in the dumps while his on base and average return to a respectable level, our superstar corner outfielder will start to resemble Randy Winn...and I don't think we really want that.

Another great preview by bigjoe.

Frenchy is coming around

I strongly believe he is going to have a very decent season. He is a different guy from whoever that was playing last season.

Golden Child needs a break...

This spring has showed some hope… quite a bit of hope. I know that contract was a little steep from a financial perspective but his outings in spring training are promising.

I just hope the home-town golden child persona doesn’t overpower what’s best for the team. I pray he has a good season… we all need him to.

sure the dude is hitting over .300 this spring but his OPS is still at the level it was in 2007. If this is how he hits in the regular season then he hasn’t really improved.

I keep saying this...

If he keeps walking and making contact at this rate, the power will come. He’s strong enough that some of those solid hits will start sailing over the wall. It sucks that we have to use the regular season as part of his learning/adjustment period, but I don’t have a problem with him getting better as the season progresses.

Of course, he could forget everything Chipper told him and go back to swinging at pitches a foot outside the plate. If he does that, I don’t know what we’ll do.

I’ll be honest. I haven’t seen him swing at bat this season. But just looking at his stats he doesn’t even have that many XBH period. Singles don’t generally become homers. I mean I will take the Frenchy from two years go over last seasons, but I am just not buying it till I see it.

If I was able to get some more sophisticated saber stats (LD%, I’m looking at you!) for the spring, I could have a better analysis of what the fuck he’s doing.

oh yeah I know, spring data is really freaking hard to come by. And I’m not raagging on your preview. You’re right, if he improves at all over last season, then our offense will be better

Singled and homered today, ending Spring Training with a .328 average.
As I have opined previously, he is going to have a big bounce-back season.

His SLG is up to a decent enough level now. I’ll take a .860 OPS from him any day of the week.

Let’s hope all the extra work will lead to a new and improved Francoeur.
