Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/28
Gwinnett 8, Norfolk 2
- B. Barton 2-3 RBI, BB, K, SB(1)
- B. Conrad 1-5 HR(4), 2 RBI, 2K
- B. Canizares 3-4 BB
- V. Pope 2-3 2B, BB
- C. Morton 5IP 5H 1R 2BB 2K
Pretty good start from Morton here. Nothing spectacular and not too long given the pitch count I am sure he is on, but not bad at all. Lots of contributors on the offensive end for our guys too. The new guy, Brian Barton, has hit safely in 4 of his 5 games with the club, but he doesn't have any XBH and has struck out 9 times (4 on the 26th). I wonder if he will ever be useful?
Mississippi 6, West Tenn 12
- G. Hernandez 1-4 2 RBI, K, CS(4)
- C. Rodriguez 2-4 2B
- T. Jones 2-4 2B, 2 RBI, 2K
Not a good game for pitchers here with Cofield walking 7 in 3.2 innings and it just getting worse. Butts and Marek gave up 8 runs between them in 1 full inning pitched. Is that good? My sensibilities are a little warped with the way the Braves bullpen started the season.
Lynchburg 8, Myrtle Beach 2
- B. McCann 0-3 K
- C. Johnson 1-4 HR(7), 2K
The Braves new DH prospect Brain McCann got off to an inauspicious start with his 0fer night. I don't know much about him but I hear he has some speed. Also the league of baseballs is looking to put a restraining order on Cody Johnson after repeated assaults. Bad Cody.
Rome 2, Lexington 4
- L. Sumoza 2-4
- G. Rodriguez 1-3 BB
- L.V. Ware 2-3 HR(1), 2 RBI
- R. Delgado 4IP 4H 3R 4BB 6K
So far Delgado has two good games, one bad one and one mediocre game. Not bad for a young guy. Rodriguez pushes his hit streak up to 10 games and his OPS is currently 1.016 which ranks 6th in the league currently. He is tied for the league lead in HR and is 4th in RBI. Call him up to Atlanta now!

I was at the Gwinnett game. Very good game by Charlie tonight. He had a lot of baserunners, but he kept himself composed and worked through it, which is something he’s lacked in the past. His fastball was working from 94-96, even hitting 97 against Matt Wieters. The funny thing is, talking to Charlie after the game, he said his arm didn’t feel great, that he’s working through some mid-spring training feelings from the lack of work he got during ST. Man, I’d love to throw 97 and have my arm feel bad. He’s going to be fine, it’s normal, but still interesting.
I remembered Barton being a lot bigger, but he looks very slight and rangy now. He did a very good job out in left field, making a lot of good routes on balls. Overall, he just seems like a smart player.
And, of course, Van Pope plays some insane D and Greg White is frickin fast.

I’m missing this 2 game stand in Norfolk because of my kids’ baseball games.
My oldest looked horrible in his game last night. He looked like he was twitching at the plate or something
Logan Schafer for 2009 ROY!!! Go Wolverine!!! SNKT!
Call the Braves office and demand Anderson be stripped of #18. He doesn't deserve that hallowed number!
I also was at the game last night and Barton showed some speed. What the stat sheet doesnt show is that he successfully stole third base but was sent back cause the umps said the ball was not in play. I could have sworn that the pitcher touched the rubber but o well he did look good .
What’s Marek’s line so far this season? I don’t have 20 seconds to look it up myself…

um, what? You don’t think that is a pretty solid line? Now I’ll have to question your baseball knowledge.
Brandon Jones is terrible, by the way.

I think its a horrible line, considering it gives him an ERA of 9.00, a WHIP of over 2, a K:BB of under 1, and a K/9 of 4.5

Horrible? That line is fantastic. I just don’t see what you are missing here.

Just a question....
not to sound like a noob, but why are the pitching lines always 4 or 5 innings here? Is it because they are throwing a ton of pitches within those innings, or is there a lower pitch count in the lower levels? Even Mr. Hanson seems to only be putting up around the same.
The Braves have a very strict pitch count for their minor leaguers early in the season. Until around mid-May they simply won’t let guys go over it. So until they you’ll see a lot of short lines. Especially for guys like Tommy who strike everyone out.

Why is McCann at the beach? I thought he was on the DL?
One day three ducks were crossing the road going to get some soda, they weren't looking where they were going and a bus came along and hit them all and now they're handycapped and that's pretty much it. Handyquacks! And they didn't get their soda!!
So where does this leave
Barton’s rank in the Braves’ system? Top 20? Top 30? I really don’t know anything about this dude. Time to break out my Baseball America 2009 Prospect bible. If you have not checked out BA’s book, it’s like BP’s but for the minors. It cost more too…
Barton isn’t considered a prospect anymore because of how much he played for St. Louis last season.

ah, good catch on that one. I guess I shouldn’t bother looking him up then?
Dude, I just checked out your site. I’ll have to hit those videos up later. You going to blog any this month?

Thanks for checking it out. I need to blog. I just haven’t. Not really living up to the ‘daily’ part of things huh? I’m going to try. We’re starting filming a movie next week, so I’m sure I’ll have some stuff to talk about.

Hmmmm…nothing about movies on my list of possible jobs for you either.
People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.
And yet again, something I could be doing concurrently with the others.
