Game 16 Recap: Braves 4, Reds 3

Javy Vazquez is taking names. I'm telling ya, if we can get him the runs, he's going to win 20 this year. Moylan, first blood from Soriano, and Gonzo with the save.

How in the WORLD does any team give up only four hits and allow 10 WALKS! Luckily it was not the Braves. Kudos.

I have no doubt that if our offense starts backing him up he could have the best numbers out of our starters.

And just for the record right now his K’s are 4th in the league with 34 the leader (Johan Santana) has 37.

I think the walks were due to us not swinging on the second at bats

From what I remember Volquez went through the order pretty quickly recording something like 5 or 6 strikeouts from us swinging at garbage that was real low. I’m assuming that after her put the order down once, one of the batting coaches tipped off the batters to start taking pitches because he wasn’t putting anything in the strike zone. In that stretch of 4 or 5 straight walks, I don’t remember seeing more than maybe 3 or 4 swings of the bat.

Revisiting that “Who is our closer” thought, it seems as though it was Gonzalez all the way. I mean, with Jay Bruce coming up in the 8th, it’s not like Bobby was playing match-ups by putting Soriano in-not unless he was considering that Votto might come up to be the last out in the 9th inning.

I think Wednesday was just an instance where Gonzalez was already warming up for the possible use in the 9th, but he got in to face a lefty. Soriano was used for the save since they had to pinch-hit for Gonzo.

I think it all comes down to his confidence

I don’t like the rain dance before the delivery, but if he gets ahead in counts, it seems like he’s fine. It’s when he gets behind is when he gets in trouble and starts making iffy decisions. I think he got lucky last night that the umps seemed to want to end the game about as much as the braves did and was able to get all the close calls
