Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/24

Charlotte 6, Gwinnett 0

  • T. Hanson 6IP 4H 2R 2BB 6K

Hanson only allowed 1 earned  run in this game and he has settled into being just a very good pitcher rather stupidly ridiculous. I'll take it. His season like is: 2.18 ERA, 20.2IP 16H, 7BB and 29K. Amazingly he is 0-3 for the season. His K rate is still solid and his BB rate is pretty good but he is giving up more hits than he has in the past which probably isn't a huge deal. Still only a .205 AVG against and he still has that .6 GB:FB rate. It is amazing he still has not allowed a homer.

Chattanooga 3, Mississippi 4

  • G. Hernandez 1-4 2B, 2K
  • C. Rodriguez 1-4 2RBI

Meh, I could stand to see Gorkys strike out less. But he has 9 walks to go with his 14 K on th season, so I won't nitpick.

Myrtle Beach 1, Salem 0

  • J. Heyward 1-4
  • F. Freeman 1-4
  • C. Johnson 0-2 2BB, 0K
  • E. Osuna 6.1 4H 0R 0BB 4K

Nice start by Edgar Osuna here. I like his arm a lot, especially since he comes from the left side. Also this is the first time in 10 games that Cody Johnson hasn't had at least one strike out.

Rome 8, Savannah 5

  • G. Rodriguez 2-5 RBI
  • S. Sime 2-4 3B, RBI
  • S. Shults 2-4 2 2B, RBI, 2K
  • C. Shehan 3-4 2 RBI, K

The Rome offense has been coming to life lately, lead by Gerrardo Rodrigeuz. He has hit safely in 7 straight games. I'd like to see Shults really start hitting because has some serious power. But as with a lot of guys like that his contact ability is a little suspect.

I'd love to have...

Medlen, Valdez, and Gomez in Atlanta. Although, O’Flaherty has been getting people out lately and Bennett has a really good line. I think we should switch Parr for Medlen, try to trade Bennett(while his numbers are good), then bring up Valdez. Wait on Gomez until O’Flaherty stops getting people out.

I forgot about Buddy, dump him for Valdez.

Yay!

No Ks for Cody Johnson … small victories people.

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

I'm really glad

to see that Hanson went 6 innings tonight! He’d been worrying me with his lack of innings. I hope he can build on this start and show that he belongs in Atlanta sooner rather than later.

And you’re right…I can’t believe he’s 0-3! That’s insanity!

Tommy may always be a high pitch count type of guy simply because he gets so many strike outs but he has been on a fairly strict pitch count so far this season. Tonight he threw 95. The other three were: 84, 95, 95. The interesting thing is he does throw a lot of strikes though at 84-56, 95-65, 95-63 and 95-65. Thats damn consistent. I wonder if he gets a lot of foul balls. His fly ball tendency might point to poor contact and people getting a lot of tips and out of play fouls. Sorry now I am just thinking outloud. But yeah, if I could see him improve one area of his game it would be his pitch conservation

I think you’re dead on about the foul balls. I can’t remember about Tommy specifically, but after watching David Hernandez and Chris Tillman pitch the last two nights and seeing them produce a billion foul balls with their filthy stuff, I’d venture to say that most overpowering pitchers are getting a lot of weak contact.

God call...

on the foul balls. I remember watching him pitch and thinking that exact same thing. Players tend to foul off quite a few pitches, and he goes deep into counts.

I actually do think the Jake Peavy comparison many were making during the offseason is interesting. The year Peavy won the Cy Young, he never had a complete game. I think it’s something that he’ll definitely need to learn to adjust to if he wants to be successful in the big leagues. But, I have no doubt in my mind that he will. He struggled much worse upon his promotion to AA last year that he has been so far this year. So, I’ll take it.

I think we should keep him down until he can gets some wins. Those are nice numbers he has put up, but if he’s not getting the W, he’s not ready for the show. Wins and losses are the end-all stat.

I'm all for keeping him down until the all-star break...

unless we have a huge need, which I doubt we will. I seriously doubt he’s going to just come up and dominate like some people seem to think. I really love Hanson as a prospect, but I want him to learn as much as he can before he comes up.

But, I think he’ll be fine in the long run even if he does come up sooner rather than later.
