OF Brian Barton acquired for Boyer

Hat tip to MLBTR. No fanposts for this yet? I googled him and couldn't find much. Would appreciate any info.

Here's the best article I was able to find, he seems like a very disciplined hitter with a high OBP and some power.

Was just about to post this myself. According to AJC.com:

Braves trade Boyer
The Braves say they’ve sent pitcher to St. Louis in exchange for outfielder Barton. MORE TO COME

Enjoy Barton

He’s pretty fun to watch play and a rather fascinating guy. Plus he’s a deadringer for Crabman on My Name is Earl.

He shall be missed.

He seems like one of those “good character” guys the Braves love.

I can’t say that I’m less than disappointed that the Braves were able to get an actual player for Boyer, Boyer could very well find his arm again in St. Louis. Still plenty of time for him to prove his worth to LaRussa, get called up, and throw a perfect inning against the Braves in September or something.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

LMAO

Boyer's got the talent.

We just haven’t the slightest clue how to use him.

And Blaine was the victim of Bobby’s Bullpen Dice last year.

I don’t see how him throwing flat fastballs is a sign of not knowing how to use him.

Brian Barton. 27 years old. Made ML debut last season for the Cardinals, going .268/.354/.392 in 153 AB. 11% BB rate, 25% K rate. Hits the ball on the ground a lot. Solid defensively.

Looks like pretty good value for Boyer. Still, do we need another LF?

yes

wow

People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

I figured that would be coming one day, it is just a matter of time I guess.

Schafer's talented enough that even Bobby knows not to platoon him.

You can’t teach him to hit lefties; unless he actually plays against them.

Besides, who’re you going to let go? Norton?

…in 23 plate appearances. His track record suggests he will struggle vs LHP.

I believe he can play all 3 OF positions which than he could be a canidate for a CF platoon when Schafer is going through these Ks spells

He has the range to play any

but his arm is LF only.

heya folks

over from Viva El Birdos.

Think you got a good player here – he’s been a popular cardinal but the organisation never seemed to know how to use him – he was never a favourite, probably due to a lack of power.

He has a lot of speed and is a good contact hitter, but, at 27 probably isn’t going to develop much power. He’s more an occasional doubles guy than a HR threat. He’s got a good eye despite striking out a fair bit, and with his speed and OBP would be a workable lead-off guy. He’s an above-average fielder (speed again) in LF, but sometimes takes slightly goofy routes to balls and has a noodle arm (although apparently UZR rates his arm above average – it’s quite weak). Also apparently a genuinely nice guy and someone a bit out of the ordinary in baseball circles – i.e. he’s pretty intelligent. My concern with him would be that, as he gets more exposure at MLB level, pitchers will attack him in the zone more (good eye but limited power) so that’s something he’ll have to adjust for.

He’s probably an average MLB LF or 4th OF right now.

Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

feel free to drop by my entirely ignorant and long-winded look at Boyer http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/2009/4/21/846999/a-quick-look-at-blaine-boyer-our
any thoughts about him?

If not for the probationary period

I’d have posted there, but here’s my two cents: You’re right to think that the Braves did get the better end of this deal, because most of us Braves fans were exasperated with Boyer’s chances to prove himself and consistently coming up short. Barton provides the the Braves with a potential platoon partner for Jordan Schafer if he shows any faltering, and his K numbers continue to grow, and hey, another OF option isn’t going to kill the team, and could potentially be a trade chip in the future, who knows.

Aside from all the numbers you put down, this is my personal opinions, but I think Blaine Boyer’s biggest problem is in his head. He’s got no mental toughness, whatsoever. Put Boyer in a game where the Cards are down by at least 4 runs, and he’ll carve batters up. Put him in any scenario where a comeback is possible or a hold of 6-runs or more needs to be preserved, and he’ll give Cards fans heartburn. His stuff is good when he actually trusts it, and it’s treat to see him set up a batter with 96mph fastballs and finish them off with a lollipop curve at 76mph. The so-called slider isn’t there yet, as he’s been working on it since late last season, and I had yet to actually see him use it in an actual game scenario.

No doubt, the potential is there. But the Braves have yet to figure out how to tap into it, and have run out of time to keep giving him chances to. I always wanted to see him emerge into this poised set-up guy, and do wish him the best, and I hope that can find some answers to his problems in St. Louis.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
