Of Francisco Cabrera, Roasted Nuts, and Cheap Perfume
There has been no shortage of negativity on this site in recent days, much of it completely justified. But I thought now might be a good time to think back about why and how we all became Braves fans in the first place. Granted, there have been posts like this before, and I'd hardly want to come off like I'm being original ... but here's my attempt at "seeing the silver lining," or lack thereof (if you will).
It was only 3 hours and 22 minutes of baseball that forever solidified my status as a Braves fan. It was October 14, 1992. I was in second grade, and while I tried to stay awake during Mrs. Spikler's lesson on place values ... I knew nothing of the evening to come. My father picked me up early from school (he told the secretary I had a dentist appointment), and as we deviated from our normal route home, I realized something was afoot.
"Son, we're going to game 7," he said. I was EXCITED. Granted, I wasn't a huge Braves fan at the time (I was more interested in The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), but I knew the playoffs were significant. At the very least, I figured it might get me out of doing my homework.
We arrived a couple of hours before first pitch. It wasn't my first baseball game, but I can still remember the smell of hot dogs, light beer, roasted peanuts, and cheep perfume (the southern belles were out en masse). The first 8 innings were rather depressing. By the middle of the ninth, the Bravos were down 2-0 and a long off-season was in sight. "It's over, we should get out of here to beat the traffic," my father said. "No dad," I replied, "they still have a chance." He looked at me like I was a naive, 7 year old kid (which I was), but he complied.
Leading off in the bottom of the ninth, TP hit a double off Drabek. Justice reached first after Jose Lind booted a routine grounder. Sid Bream walked, and all of a sudden, the go-ahead run was on first. "See, I told you dad," I said. He again looked at me like I was a naive, 7 year old kid, but I didn't care. I knew something great was going to happen (or so I like to think).
Ronny Gant hits a deep fly ball, a worthwhile sacrifice, and we're suddenly down by only one run. Berryhill walks and Brian Hunter pops out, down 2-1 w/ 2 outs and the bases load. Then, Francisco Cabrera (a seldomly-used bench player) strides to the plate. I'm not sure this actually happened, but I like to think I said a silent prayer at that point. I remember the crack of the bat, and the roar of the crowd. Cabrera singled to left, Justice rounded third, Justice scored, Bream around third, the Barry Bonds throw and .... BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN! BRAVES WIN!
The rest, folks, is history. I remember hanging out of my dad's 1986 Honda civic, slapping high fives with the drunken masses who were being DDed home that night (or so I hope). The city of Atlanta was alive that night, and for one shining moment, the Bravos were NL Champions.
I assume most or all of you had similar experiences. That turning, instrumental moment or series of moments that forever converted you to Braves fandom. Yes, they aren't the easiest bunch to support, but they're our bunch. GA's hate for baseball, FYF's inability to take a pitch, Gonzo's ridiculous windup, Bobby's tendency to fall asleep while Blaine Boyer ruins yet another game ... they're our team.
I did not write this post to discourage anyone from ranting and raving about our inadequacies. Rather, I hope we can all reflect, if for only a moment ... on why we chose THIS team in the first place. Write your personal experiences, criticize me for being a sentimental nerd, suggest a delicious beer I should try ... it's up to YOU. But please, DO be gentle.

Amazing story. Thank you for this. I am probably one of the more optimistic people on this website. It has been a rough couple of series but it is very early in the season and we are still trying to get things ironed out. In my opinion, there has been too much doom and gloom on here lately, but people are entitled to their opinions. The Braves are a good team this year, and I truly believe that they will be around when the season comes to a close. Again thank you for this. GO BRAVES!!

good post
Baseball is a game where a curve is an optical illusion, a screwball can be a pitch or a person, stealing is legal and you can spit anywhere you like except in the umpire's eye or on the ball.

Appreciated.
Thanks for sharing. Very nice break in the cloud of gloom circling the blog!
yeah the other 96 is that I am too good for everyone else.

Good post.
But we all know what the real question is…who was your favorite ninja turtle? God help me if you say Michelangelo…

I named my dog Michalangelo after the Ninja Turtle. He ended up living 17 years, so not only was he alive for both incarnations of the Ninja Turtles, but he was older than the turtles themselves.

I don't get this whole "new age" crap ...
They should have left it alone. Talk about ruining a good thing.

I always respected Donatello ...
In retrospect, I think it was because he always took the diplomatic approach. Oh, and we have the whole nerd thing in common as well. That, and you have the respect the man’s bōstaff (sp?) skills.

Fair enough. Donatello was okay in my book.

Ha, which time? Casey Jones laid him out pretty good, but he also received a beat down from Tatsu and the Foot.

The one that put him in the coma, when they took him to April’s parents house out in the country and kept him in the bath tub. Why would you try and take Tatsu and the Foot on by yourself? COME ON RAPHAEL!

Yeah, it was a foolish move. Pretty awesome fight scene though, when they’re in the antique store or whatever it was, fighting foot soldiers as it burns to the ground.

April because she was HOT!

Didn’t they switch Aprils between the first and second movie? And one of them was much hotter than the other?

Just kidding, the turtle I liked the best was Leonardo. Splinter was my favorite character overall because he was a bad ass even though he was handicapped .
As much as we love it, baseball is just a game. Rest In Peace Nick Adenhart.
Leonardo was such a tool. All iterations of him.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
The cooler the weapon, the bigger the tool. No kids liked a big stick, so Donatello was expected to fail, but kids liked him anyway. Michaelangelo’s nunchucks were so awesome, he was supposed to be like this über tool, so the cartoon version ended up losing the chucks and always had this stupid grappling line from then on.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
So in this theory,
character + weapon = toolness factor
character + cool weapon (swords) = tool
character + crappy weapon (sai) = cool
So,
Splinter + no weapon = coolest character of them all?
As much as we love it, baseball is just a game. Rest In Peace Nick Adenhart.
Splinter had a stick. It was lame, but not as lame as two sais.
So the hierarchy goes:
Coolest
Raphael
Donatello
Splinter
Michaelangelo
Leonardo
Lamest
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
It was a cane!!! Not a weapon!!!

Handicapped? I thought he was just old. I can’t believe you guys are talking about those retarded movies, anything outside the cartoon isn’t part of the official TMNT canon. Krang pwns everyone.
The first two movies weren’t that bad, admit it.
However, I think the crowning achievement of TMNT would have to be…

Can anyone name the two bad guys there? Hmm? NO CHEATING.

There, you go! Although it won’t work, you will need to hold them down and shoot a fire extinguisher into their mouths.

No problem, I’ll just stand still and wait for them to charge from two sides, and get out of the way at the last second and let them ram headfirst into each other. When they’re down, I’ll hit them with the extinguishers.

Why do you think they put Toka and Razar (I don’t remember them in the cartoon) in the movie instead of Beebop and Rocksteady?
People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.
I dunno, but I was always upset about it

i hadn’t looked at this in a few days, and then i saw it had 53 comments, and i thought, “wow, i bet there are some good stories.” I check it out, and its all about the Turtles. So to summarize, Raphael was the best, just because he cussed in the first movie.

This is exactly what I thought. It reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Bart, Milhouse, and Nelson leave a showing of Naked Lunch and Nelson says, “I can think of at least two things wrong with that title.”
lol…was that the episode where they went to the World’s Fair in Knoxville?

Great post - wish I could have been at that game
I’ve always been a Braves fan ever since I can remember. My big bro was a Braves fan, and I grew up watching them on TBS, just about every night. I don’t remember much about the playoff run in ‘82, I was 6 years old, but all through the 80’s I watched every chance I got. Everybody’s favorite, Dale Murphy, playing his heart out on those terrible 80’s teams. Jerry Royster, Bob Horner, Gerald Perry, Rafael Ramirez, Rick Mahler, Gene Garber, Rick Camp (a relief pitcher who hit a HR in like the 18th inning against the Mets on an endless July 4th game in ‘86), and ol’ Chief Nok-A-Homa banging on his drum. I am just a fan. I can’t point to one defining moment that cemented my love for the Braves. It was tested when they traded Murphy to the Phillies in ‘90. That was tough. But I rode a wave for the next 15 years and I’m ready for some more October baseball from the Bravos.
GO BRAVES!!!
