Blaine Boyer strikes again.

Ok...hate me if you want to, but I've seen enough. I watched Boyer melt down over and over again last year. I was through with him then. Many have said that perhaps he was just tired last year or over used. So far this year, I don't think that excuse can be used. so far this year he's appeared in 3 games. In 1.1 IP, he's allowed 3 H, 3 BB, 6 ER and has 2 K. His ERA now stands at 40.50. I mean, seriously, are we really going to keep allowing this guy to give games away? Yeah, Yeah, yeah, I know. Its early. At some point, though, you have to stop making excuses for people who aren't getting it done.

I mean he is laying the ball in there now and still cant find the zone. His fastball was 91 today, instead of his 95

I hardly ever talk bad about a Braves guy, but Blaine is just awful. He’s not a big league pitcher right now and he needs to go.

On a different complaint

I hate Jackie Robinson Day. This has probably already come up in the game thread, but I was at a bar for the game so I haven’t read about it. It is so frustrating to watch a game without sound when every damn player has the same number. You don’t know who’s batting or pitching or anything. Also, Matt Diaz really looks like Kelly now. I didn’t see it til they had the same number. Anyway, they need a new way of honor Jackie, cause I like him less today than yesterday.

Except Diaz is right-handed and Kelly is left-handed?

Which is really easy to tell when they are running the bases.

Kelly wears tall socks.

Also bats from a different side of the plate. Boyer needs to be released.

I agree

I wonder at what point is there too much of a good thing? Of course, they will never get rid of it, because the league would never hear the end of it.

Like many things

It’s been diluted with time.

Griffey Jr. doing it was a nice gesture, but then all African-American players decided they needed to do it, and then teams with no predominant African-American presences were getting called out, and then you were stuck seeing guys like Craig Biggio and Mark Kotsay donning #42. It makes sense for the entire Dodgers squad to do it, but for everyone in the entire league? Nice gesture, but highly excessive. All while Mariano Rivera quietly stands in his own greatness realizing that nobody will ever let him have any credit for wearing #42.

And you’re right, if they were to pull back the reigns, even just a little bit, the Terrence Moores, Barry Bondses, and Gary Sheffields of the world will rain upon them strongly worded articles, press clips, and enough race cards to fill a six-deck shoe.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

Boyer. Needs. To. Be. Sent. Down.

He really can’t handle the pressure.

Maybe Boyer gets sent down when they call Jo-Jo up Saturday?

The bullpen as a whole has been pretty terrible (Soriano, however, has been brilliant) but Boyer has been especially painful to watch. I have a hard time believing that Manny Acosta or someone else down in Triple or Double-A wouldn’t be a better option than Boyer right now. I kinda wrote off last year’s shortcomings to being over worked but maybe he’s just not that good. Whatever the case may be, he clearly has no location right now and is thus useless.

He's just not that good

He’s really good at looking serious and licking his fingers, though

I just realized who Boyer reminds me of. Remember McKay McBride? The fat lefty who was a major contributor to the bullpen disaster of 2006. Every time McBride came into a game you just waited for the implosion to happen, Boyer has become that guy.

I thought they were the same guy, but McBride just changed his name to attempt to fool the fans into having hope.

Just as BB are appropriate initials for Boyer, PM are appropriate for Moylan, cuz that’s the kind of tylonel I need to recover from his recent outings. I love Pete, but he just doesn’t have it right now either. I think he needs to wear his old frames without the prescription to get him back in the pre-surgery zone. Maybe Boyer should try a pair too… or, you know, throw strikes.

You're right

Boyer is running out of excuses for poor performance right now. Last year, he could blame fatigue and overuse, but let’s remember something; Boyer was shit to start last season too, before really beginning to settle in, midway through the season. Now that might be a long way to wait for some of you guys, and I wouldn’t disagree, but had he not been abused and overused, he could’ve finished out the season well.

Things aren’t looking good for him right now, and comparing him to Macay McBride is along the equivalent of telling him that he’s adopted, and that his real mother’s a whore somewhere in the Louisiana French Quarter.

As for Peter Moylan, there’s two things I’m keeping in mind for him:
• Recovering TJS guy
• He’s divorced as of Oct/Nov 2008 and probably needs the same sports psychologist that Smoltz used to pimp all the time

They may sound like excuses, but like Boyer, Moylan started his 2007 season like shit before becoming a sub-2.00 ERA reliever.

His first appearance, where he gave up all three of those runs. He only got better as the season progressed, but he started bad.

And that appearance was mostly bad because he had just gotten into town on very little to no sleep.

I totally forgot we referred to him last year as “Blowyer”. Thanks for reminding me!

One of the only things that I have faulted Bobby Cox for over the years is his dogged loyalty to guys in the dugout. To a fault, Bobby will continue to pull for a guy way past when all others would simply have moved on. I think there have been several examples of this over the years, guys who really shouldn’t have continued to take up a roster space, and instead got plenty of playing time.

Names that come up…Mark Redmond, Shane Reynolds, Chris Reitsma. Bobby would continue to march them out there game after game and watch them get shelled. Blaine Boyer is just the next in line. Many people on this forum have said that I should just give guys like him and Jo Jo Reyes a little bit of time. Sorry sweetheart, this is Major League baseball. Either get your shit together, or go home.

I think last year Bobby finally started to lose patience with some of those guys. Reyes especially. That guy had excellent control…he could consistently hit the dead center of the strike zone.

At some point, though, Cox is going to have to take a cold hard look at the numbers and realize that no amount of cheering from the dugout is going to make Boyer a reliable arm. One good outing can’t erase the 2 before or the 2 after. Last night was case in point. The Braves were only down a run, very manageable. After Boyer came and went and all was said and done, the lead was out of reach.

I hope Cox realizes that our chances of winning the division this year hang on his ability to move on from guys he’s attached to and put in guys who will get it done.

He also stuck with Kelly Johnson when he started his career 1-30 or whatever it was when most managers would have benched him. It works both ways. Sometimes a guy comes out of it, sometimes he doesn’t. But bottom line, guys don’t get to the majors by accident. They’re there because they had potential or were good at some point. It doesn’t do any good to yank a guy after 3 or 4 bad games. Boyer is a little different. He had a solid first half of the season, but he totally blew up at the end of the year last year and it’s not like Bobby is using him that much this year, he’s only made 3 appearances so far. You think we should have cut Boyer after his first appearance? Or after his second one, in which he was effective? There’s an argument for cutting him now, but we wouldn’t have known until he got used and choked.

Redman only started 5 games for us, by the way. You can’t hang any of the Redman fiasco on Bobby. That was all JS/the tiny payroll/Hampton, etc.

Send him down, cut him…makes no difference to me. I’m over Boyer.

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

Must admitt....

Boy I had this one wrong! After watching a spring training game I thought to myself…Wow. Gonzalez is gonna blow up,and Sorianno will at the very least go on the DL. Now Boyer looks like the right guy to close. I put my money where my mouth was and wasted a pick on him in a roti league.Ugh, somebody tell me he is going to be sent down, please.
