Early Impressions
The season is barely underway and already some problems have come up. The bullpen is a little suspect and left field could be a big problem.
However I have been very impressed with starting rotation I think that we made the right moves and the rotation should be good. I think that the infield is good and the outfield in center and right has been good. I think that Kotchman will be fine this season and while he may not hit 30 homeruns or steal any bases he does play good defense and should hit around .280 with 15 homeruns for the year.
If we need to make changes anywhere I think that our middle relief could be it. Their control has been suspect this year and I think Moylan needs some time at AAA to get things figured out again. Another place that could require a change is left field. Anderson has been very disapointing this year. He has not hit at all so far this season and is terrible on defense. Left field is a big problem because I don't think that we have any internal options to fill the void should we get rid of Anderson. Diaz is a good platoon player and Brandon Jones might be able to come up and be an okay player but in reality he is nothing more than a fourth outfielder on most teams. He doesn't hit for a good average and he doesn't hit for power. Trade options aren't that good either. Holliday is probably going to become available whenever the A's fall out of contention but he is a free agent at the end of the year and would take a lot of good prospects to get and we probably wouldn't be able to sign him at the end of the year. I have heard Aaron Rowands name brought up, and while I like him as a player he is not an option. He is owed $44 million through 2012 and we can't pay him that and we don't need him that long.
None of our minor leaguers are ready to come up yet. Heyward is at least 2 years away from being ready and Johnson might never become anything more than a power hitter who strikes out to much.
Overall though I think that this team should be able to compete all year. If we do make any trades it will involve some of our extra pitching that could net us a good bullpen arm.

Bullpen
I know it is early and there is a lot of baseball yet to be played, but I am getting sick of our bullpen’s inability to throw strikes. I can understanding giving up base hits, but an inability to throw strikes is inexcusable. Stop trying to throw the perfect pitch and strike out the batter. Can we please force these guys to hit the ball? Blaine “Base on Balls” Boyer needs to hop on the shuttle to Gwinnett where he belongs. At least when Rick Ankiel or Mark Wohlers couldn’t find the strike zone, it was entertaining to see where the next pitch would go.
I whine because I care.

The bullpen has been abysmal nearly from top to bottom so far.

The bullpen is just awful, this is starting to remind me of the Chris Retisma bullpen ala 2005/2006

Blaine Boyer
needs to be released. our rotation has been very good. our lineup has been pretty good for the most part. but our bullpen, besides soriano and carlyle, is pathetic (Gonzo has been alright i guess).
Be quick, but don't hurry.

Every MLB team has a weakness and our bullpen happens to be ours. Gonna be some tough games to watch when the bullpen gets in there from here on out. We will just end up havin to get used to it. Not sayin our bullpen will blow a 6 or 7 run lead in 1 inning in games but close games will be an adventure for this bullpen, even Gonzalez makes it interesting.

To quote my BSD (Black Shoe Diaries) Brethren
The bullpen has been on the struggle bus so far this season.
Here is the visual evidence

I was there tonight and you really don’t get a feel for what only 20,000 people feels like at the Ted until you go. It was pretty sad.

shouldn’t have turned down a very nice offer in the Fall.

That's not the point
No one feels sorry for Ohman. People are just saying that after the offer was pulled, and his price tag went down, FW should have pulled the trigger and got the player he wanted in the first place, at a lower price. Again, no one cares about Ohman’s feelings, they’re a little annoyed that $2.5 mil was spent on FUGA when $1.5 mil could have gotten someone who was very good last year, not to mention an upgrade over the in-house options.

Aaron Rowand? Ugh…
As far as our bullpen goes…I’m done with Boyer, that guy needs to go. I’ve still got faith in Moylan, but he’s obviously not himself. Carlyle looked great, and I still have no fucking clue why he was pulled after a 10-pitch inning.
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.
