Talking Chop where did you grow up???
Vegas Aces mentioned this on another thread and I thought it would be pretty interesting to run with. Where did you grow up? And if you would like to expand, please leave a comment about why you are a Braves fan.
I was born and raised in Alaska, became a huge Braves fan because of TBS, moved to the Bay Area, California for college, completed a stint in Arizona, then to Sacramento, California for grad school. Besides my family, probably the most consistent thing in my life so far has been my love for the Braves.
How about you?

I’m re-reading the headline several times…
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Born in Alaska? What a weirdo! Although I was born in Utah, so I’m not much better. After a few years we moved to Germany for three years, and then have spent the remainder of my disappointing life in Northern Virginia.
The ’91 playoffs were the first games I remember watching as a kid, and the following year I developed sort of an obsession with Deion Sanders. David Justice was another personal favorite growing up. TBS was a godsend, because otherwise I would have grown up an Orioles fan…yuck…
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.
Born in Alaska? What a weirdo! Although I was born in Utah, so I’mnotmuchbetterworse.
Fixed.

By reading the title, it makes me think you’re talking about where the website grew up.

Louisiana here. Though I’ve been all over the place recently. Spent a year in Grand Cayman, another 8 months in Maine, and will soon be spending a year in Tulsa.
Louisiana too
But I spent some time in Arkansas for college. Now I’m back in LA, living in New Orleans. I don’t think I can live anywhere where I can’t have consistent access to crawfish.
Birmingham, AL
I was one of those southeastern fans who fell in love with the Bravos during their run with TBS. I can remember sitting in front of the TV (literally, on the floor) with my dad yelling at the Braves to beat the damned Giants or Pirates. I loved them when they were really bad, got really good, and everything in between.
I’ve got two little girls who I’m raising in the ways of the chop.
I was born, raised, and still live in Birmingham, AL. Growing up, my dad would periodically check me out of school so that we could make the drive to Atlanta and catch a game at the launching pad, and maybe a frozen orange at the Varsity. We still go as much as possible, but with age comes responsibillity, and loooong work hours (and fewer trips to the ATL).
Everybody thought I was a weird kid because I loved watching Tommy Glavine pitch and most of my friends thought he was boring. Probably had something to do with being at Game 6 of the 95 series. That’s the moment I knew I’d be a fan for life.
Harrisburg, PA, but you all knew that already. I’ve spent my entire life here. So exciting.

As much as we love it, baseball is just a game. Rest In Peace Nick Adenhart.
Agreed
The farthest east I’ve been is Texas or Iowa. I’ve lived in CA all my life. It’s great here—beaches, fresh produce, great weather—if it’s good, we’ve got it. We also have the largest chapter of the KKK right next door to me in Clovis, if you’re into that sort of thing…so, I guess if it’s bad, we’ve got a lot of that, too. That’s what happens when your state is massive.

Born and Raised in Virginia
I was born in the sticks of Virginia (near JMU), but then moved at an early age to Northern Virginia, where I went to school, and portions of college there, some time at Radford, some time at Virginia Tech.
TBS was the reason I watched the Braves – it was always on. When you’re a kid, and mom and dad don’t want you playing any video games, you find other things to distract you. For me, it was watching the TV that didn’t have the Nintendo on it, and since we didn’t have premium channels (read: Skinemax), it was all about the Braves from then, ’til now.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
Harrisonburg ain’t so bad, but I grew up in Abingdon right on down the I-81 corridor. Its not as bad as, say Wise, Big Stone Gap, or (shudder) Grundy, but its close.
I, along with many others here, grew up rooting for the Braves because of TBS, although they were probably the closest team to where I lived. I moved up to Baltimore when I was 15, hated everything about it (Orioles, Ravens, you name it), and stuck with the Braves.

I spent the school year with my dad in Missouri and spent the summers with my mom in Georgia and couple years West Virginia from my elementary school and middle school years. I followed the Braves and Cards when I was younger, but I think I saw more Braves games simply because I was there during the summer. Or maybe it was all those division titles helped too. I’ve been mostly around Atlanta for high school and university so it’s been much easier to follow the team than when you’re living in some bumfuck population 4600 town in Missouri.

Currently living in Atlanta, which is good cause I can watch the games live. But growing up it was either the Braves or the Cubs, and I was always drawn to the Braves.

Well I grew up in Tennessee and have loved the Braves since I was really young. My granddad (Papa) was and still is a huge fan and I remember sitting with him watching the Braves on TBS back in the late 70’s and all through the 80’s. When I am home I still go over and visit him in his assisted living apartment and we watch the games whenever they are on. I can’t ever remember not being in love with the team and not knowing every player on the roster, collecting their cards, and living and dying with their wins and losses. To me, my fanhood is a birthright that was handed down to me from my papa and I can’t ever imagine not loving the Braves. I’m 37 now just in case any of you chuckleheads think I am talking like a kid but I feel that emotional about the team and it is the one thing in life where I can still connect with my alzheimers disease ridden granddad. The Braves are a huge part of my life and if I lived anywhere near Atlanta I would have season tickets. I’m stuck in Kansas City, Missouri now and I had to purchase the MLB.com Premium package this year so I can keep up with my team.
That’s awesome man, I think the father/son bond over baseball is one of the greatest things there is. Wish I had that growing up. My dad doesn’t watch alot of sports, but he’s nice enough to root for the Braves when we watch a game together.
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

Shit, my dad and I still play catch when I go up there sometimes. I had been experimenting with throwing with my left hand, and my dad didn’t really notice. And when he did he was all like “I didn’t know you were left-handed.” Then I told him how awful of a father he was, because I wasn’t, and then we laughed and went to Nationals Park and drank beer together while the game went 15 innings and ended at 2 am.
No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.
How great is it when you go to a game with your dad and he buys you several beers?

Agreed on the father/son baseball bonding comment. My dad and I spent several weekends each summer going to Cubs and Reds games (those were the only ones a day trip away) and they are some of my fondest memories. I loved to sit down with my dad and watch Cubs/Braves games on a Saturday and then go play some pitch and catch out in the yard for a few hours. I feel sad for kids who don’t have dads or dads who don’t spend time with their kids.
Where at in TN?

I think I'm the only Braves fan here born in Georgia.
I wish TBS still broadcasted our games nationally. Future generations with no local baseball teams to root for are inevitably going to start becoming Yanks/RedSox/Cubs fans and that is a total bummer.

So you are the only one
Sucks to be a Braves fan in Georgia. The Braves suffer from being in Atlanta. Most people have moved here from another state and already have their team. I think that’s why the Braves can’t sell out games and tickets are pretty cheap. And it’s easy to get to the game without driving. I almost always take MARTA to the game.

don’t get me started on Kiffin
"It takes many nails to build crib, but only one screw to fill it." - Chinese Proverb
Nick Satan sucks
Kiffin is the man. He will be a recruiting nightmare for the rest of the SEC. Kids absolutely love his cocky, self-assured big mouth. If I was a fan of any other team in the country I would hate him but since I am all Big Orange I love him. He is the new Urban Meyer (big mouthed asshole) but he needs to win and win quick to back up his mouth. Alabama is the devil and their fans should really stop marrying their sisters and cut their mullets. lol. College football is such a breeding ground for rabid fans and it’s fun to get after rival teams fans.
Alabama is the only school in the nation with fans that virtually every other fan in the country can make fun of. Self-deluded big mouths even when they were losing 10 years in a row to the Vols.
Seriously? Someone from Knoxville is going to accuse others of being inbred rednecks? I’m so astonished by the absurdity that I can’t directly respond to it.
I will respond to your glee about Lane Kiffin. You and the rest of “Big Orange” nation are going to get very tired of that “cocky, self-assured big mouth” when it can’t back up what it’s spewing.
Hey how did that work out for you without Saban's players?
Ha ha, thats why I love College Football, everyone hates each other…. Anyways, I’m Bama Born here, grew up in Rural North Alabama (Thus my hate for UT). Always been a Bama and Braves Fan, went to school at UA, where I met the only person I’ve ever met in real life more obsessed with the Braves than myself. I’ve been waiting to share this story forever. During the Bob Wickman years, I was over at his house, watching the game with his roommate. The obsessed fan, “Louie” (Not his real name), watched every game in his Lazy Boy, with a Braves Jersey and hat, and beer out of his personal fridge, on his new HD (this is when HD first started getting big) TV… As I watched Wickman blow another save, I hear Louie lose it in his room, he comes storming through, with this totally distraught look on his face, and I say “That sucked, huh” he said “yeah, and I broke my TV”, Turns out, when Wickman blew it, he picked up the shorts he wore to class that day and flung them at the TV…. Forgetting that his belt was still in them. Buckle to screen, $1700 down the shitter

May he be as successful in Tennessee as he was in Oakland.

Norwalk, CT
for me. Born and raised. Went to Penn State for college. For me it was the slide. I had been to Yankees games before that (dad was a yankee fan so in 96 when I was young and cocky I laid into him after the first 2 games, only to watch it all crumble and get killed for the next month) but I just didn’t get attached to the Yankees or the Muts. I will admit that I liked HoJo as a player for a little while and my idol is Thurmon Munson (I still play and I’ve been a catcher since I was 8 and I wore the number 15), but I also like Javy as a catcher as well (My mom LOVED HIM). TBS also helped as well keeping me in the braves loop being in the Northeast. My dad took me to the Mets/Braves game when they hung a 15 spot on them and had to bring Matty Franco in to pitch. That’s still probably the best game that I’ve been to.
lol…yeah, they branded me at birth. No lie, I have one cousin named Bear and another named Van Tiffin. Back in ‘85 we were down 23-22 to Auburn with 2 seconds left on the clock. Van Tiffin came in and kicked a game winning 52 yard field goal. Before the snap my uncle promised he’d name his first son after him if he made the kick.

You should have given all the states in the southeast different options and made the other options “in the US but outside the South” and “outside the US.” We would have had a better idea where everybody is from rather than the information that most of us are from the south…which we probably already knew.
Anyway, I’m from the booming metropolis of Sumter, South Carolina.
Tennessee!
and it’s Great To Be a Tennessee Vol !!!
I’ve been a Braves fan since birth, and that’s been awhile ago. Probably my favorite memory from early childhood is falling asleep on the front porch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, listening to the Braves game on the radio, with commentary from my Daddy. Some of the names included Hank Aaron, Rico Carty, Eddie Matthews, and Felipe Alou. Braves games on the radio still make me feel all warm and fuzzy and safe.
Interesting that you mention ole Rocky Top, because where I grew up (Abingdon, VA), is just about equidistant between UT and Virginia Tech…every store that sold college apparel gear was split down the line between the Maroon/Orange and the Orange/White…and naturally if you rooted for one you hated the other. I ended up attending Virginia Tech, so I suppose you know which side of the store I shopped on!
But great story about listening to the Braves on radio. Baseball is one of the sports that can be accurately described over the waves, unlike Football or Basketball.

but even with a SC ejamacation, I can at least spell Georgia, Mr. prep school! :P (Just a wild guess; but why else would you live in NA and go to school in Aug., ya know?)
Born in Aiken, SC, and grew up in North Augusta. 1st jobs and a couple of quarters of college were in Augusta (after one at GA Southern) before bolting to Atlanta – that is, after a summer in Charleston – at 19. Moved back to Augusta a few years later for some stupid shit called love, stayed a year tending bar at The Highlander Inn in NA and more college, finally wised up and moved back to Atlanta. Been here ever since, thank Pujols. Family still lives in NA, in the dark ages, so that’s why I don’t show up here sometimes on the weekends.
yeah the other 96 is that I am too good for everyone else.
how do we define “grow up”?
was born in wisconsin, but moved when i was 10 to FL….so where did i grow up? im still not a grown up and some of us may never be (heres to hoping)

Shreveport, Louisiana
I’m 33 so I was pretty much hitting baseball awareness age right around the time the Murph was winning MVP’s and the Braves were in the playoffs plus the Superstation made the Braves the team in Shreveport when I was a kid. I would say I still see more Braves hats there than any other team. I think since the only team the whole state can agree on is LSU, we associate ourselves more with the Southeast than with Texas even though the Rangers were only 3 hours away and the Braves were about 7 or 8.
Plus, I don’t see how anyone who really watched the ‘91 series (who wasn’t from Minnesota) could come out of it not being a rabid Braves fan.
Bustins
Kellogg, ID
I grew up in the panhandle of North Idaho and became a braves fan during my teen years (late 70’s through the early 80’s) because of TBS. It was awesome to be able to watch nearly every game the Braves played even if they stuggled to put wins in books. I left Idaho after HS to enlist in the Navy. After 22 years of service I am now retired and living in Panama City, FL. Like others it is a bit strange to have been born and raised in the Northwest and have been a die hard Braves fan for the majority of my life. Of course, I was deployed onboard ship during the WS championship season but fortunately my family recorded the games for me so I still got to watch even if it was considerably after the fact.
