Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/13
Quickie update since I didn't get back from Pittsburgh until just now.
Gwinnett 0, Durham 3
- T. Redmond 4.2IP 7H 2R 1BB 4K
Redmond didn't pitch poor except he just threw a lot of pitches to get through his innings. Crafty guy could get a shot this year if things go horribly wrong Atlantaaaa.
Carolina 6, Mississippi 2
- G. Hernandez 2-4 RBI, K, CS
Not a great game. Only 3 hits total with some baserunning and fielding blunders thrown in. Hicks had an error along with a Britton passed ball and double plays killed a couple more rallies.
Frederick 6, Myrtle Beach 8
- J. Heyward 1-4 HR(1), 3 RBI
- F. Freeman 2-4 HR(1), 2 RBI
Finally Heyward gets something. I think he might be pressing a little and pitchers aren't pitching to him as much. I have no quantifiable evidence for this other than both Freddie Freeman and Cody Johnson seem to be getting pitches to hit. Also, Craig Kimbrel has allowed at least one run in every appearance this season.

Thanks for the updates!
I love the updates………but just because Freeman and Johnson are hitting and Heyward isn’t it doesn’t have to mean that Heyward isn’t getting any pitches to hit. He might just be stinking it up at the moment. If they other guys are outperforming him then maybe they are just better this week or the last couple of weeks. I got so tired last year of everyone all up on Heyward’s jock even though Freeman was obviously outplaying him (at least in the power numbers categories). I am as excited about Heyward’s potential as anybody but I would never hint at qualifying another guys numbers as not being as impressive when they clearly are. Sorry for my little rant but it’s getting ridiculous how much slack he gets compared to other players. He WILL be a stud player for the braves……but so will Freeman.
“Pressing a little” is a way a player can stink it up. Heyward is the greatest player to ever come through the Braves farm system and freeman is barely able to hold his jock strap on a good day.
Greatest player ever? Wow.
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

Haha, how long did it take you to decide on Lightenberg?

Haha, nice pull. I always remember him because of that Braves 1995 World Series video I have where he explains how he had a dream about saving the final game of the WS. He was a little off, but Game 4 isn’t too shabby.

God forbid I miss out spelling the guy who hasn’t been in baseball in 5 years. Though sadly I even attempted to look it up and they brought up his page on baseball reference when I typed that in, even though they have it spelled right on his actual page. Fail for me.
I think it’s a fair bet right now that Freeman reaches the Majors before Heyward. We have plenty of outfield depth in the organization (B Jones, Gorkys, Blanco) to hold it down for a while, but at first base we’re going to look to replace Kotchman as soon as can, unless he dramatically turns things around.
And as well, it seems that Freeman’s power is developing faster-more home runs and a higher slugging% last year at Rome. Heyward was definitely the more impressive at camp (as you’d expect) but Freeman might be just ahead of the curve.
it is possible that Freeman could end up in Atlanta before heyward but probably not for the reasons that you are positing. Our OF ‘depth’ is a little bit of a joke. None of the guys you mentioned are even as good as Kotchman and none of them play RF. Brandon Jones has the potential to be a solid LF, but he hasn’t shown any progress in the last year. Kotchman has already posted .800+ OPS in a full season of ML work. If Freeman beats Heyward to Atlanta it will be because he significantly outplays Heyward and Heyward plays absolutely horribly for an entire season.
Seriously, if Heyward is ready and is prevented from reaching the majors for guys like SWAGGA and Blanco…well…
