For the love of God, can we sign Will Ohman

There wasn't a more valuable reliever on the Braves last year than Will Ohman, and somehow he's managed to still go unsigned. From K-Ros:

The Marlins would like to sign free-agent left-hander Will Ohman, but the pitcher is believed to be seeking terms similar to what the Nationals gave Joe Beimel — one year, $2 million. That's too pricey for the Fish.

Surely, surely, surely we have $2 million laying around. Could we void Garret Anderson's contract and use that $2 million on Ohman. Our LOOGY options this spring look like this:

  • Boone Logan - 4.26 ERA, 4BB in 6.1IP
  • Eric O'Flaherty - 14.21 ERA, 16 hits (16 hits!) in 6.1IP
  • Jeff Ridgway - 40.50 ERA, and that doesn't even count the times he got blown up in exhibition games

That's bad, worse, and worser. All the other LOOGY options are in minor league camp.

Come On Frank Wren, just give him a call and give him one year and $2 million. Ohman is a guy who can pitch in 80-plus games and get lefties out (they hit just .200 off him last year). The whole reason we traded for Ohman last year was because we didn't have any lefthanders who could get anyone out in 2007. Are we going to repeat that this year?

I agree. We need to have him on the team to seal up the bullpen. Our options right now lead me to believe that in the current circumstance we would be better off keeping another righty and leaving these other guys off the roster.

The Braves could usually add modest payroll at their behest...

… but I don’t think so in this economy. I wish we could get him, though. It really sucks for all parties, especially having to see Ohman still sitting at home 10 days from Opening Day.

Oh, Bobby.

Hey! We could always sign Royce Ring again. Looks like he was put on waivers by the Cards. I would be TOTALLY confindent in our bullpen if we only had Ring!

by Bmacbandwagon on Mar 26, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No

Give Ring anything other than one lefty at a time, and the results are disastrous. Ring is a LOOGY; Ohman is a decent lefty-reliever.

But I digress; Ohman has a cute wife, but adding Ring back to the roster gives me excuse to post the following image:

Depending on the month last season, the Ring was also Royce shutting down the opposing team’s best lefty batter with RISP, or the Ring was the Braves’ chances of staying in the game after Royce gets stuck in the game too long because all the other bullpen arms were gassed, and Bobby had no choice but to let him pitch an entire inning in which he would get shelled.

For me

the scariest part(s) about The Ring was A.) The dead girl in the closet – her face was horrific B.) the black and white movie…seriously, they should have based the rest of the movie off of that woman in the mirror.

The face of the girl in the closet was shocking, especially at the age when I first saw it. The tone and atmosphere of the movie is what made it really creepy.

My buddy’s dad owns an old theatre downtown where I used to live. We filled up a few coolers of beer and threw a blower, with all the lights off and The Ring playing. It was the creepiest movie I’ve ever seen. The buzz, theatre, and terrified girls made the movie worse.

"Threw a blower"

I am not familiar with that phrase…

The dead girl in the closet

Without a doubt. The fucking well really crept me out too though, and the scene where they finally showed the girl crawling out of it pretty much sealed the deal that I would have nightmares (one of the only movies to do that to me). When she crawled through the TV it was pretty lame though.

What’d you guys think of The Grudge? I actually thought it was pretty good, but most people disagree with me.

I really am in favor of dropping Garret Anderson for the sake of signing Ohman. It does us no good to have a good rotation and a crappy bullpen just look how that worked out for the Mets last year.

Seriously we don’t need 2 guys thats supposed to be in the heart of our order over the age of 35 getting injured all the time. i would be perfectly fine either giving the job to Diaz or having him platoon with Brandon Jones cause Brandon Jones has been raking this Spring and so has Diaz. Meanwhile Garrett has just been Raking in money
