Braves Make Second Round of Spring Cuts
The Atlanta Braves made their second roster cuts of the spring, optioning four players and re-assigning four others. Right-handed pitchers Steve Marek, James Parr, Todd Redmond and Luis Valdez were optioned to triple-A Gwinnett. Left-handed pitchers Francisley Bueno and Mariano Gomez and catchers Phillip Britton and Matt Kennelly were all re-assigned to minor league camp.
No surprise on these guys, though it's interesting we just had a puff piece on Mariano Gomez on the Braves site on the day he gets cut. Marek and Parr had not allowed an earned run this spring and both were performing above expectations. Redmond had been knocked around a bit, and Valdez was having some problem with his control, leading the team with five walks issued.
This round of cuts leaves Tommy Hanson and Chris Medlen as the only non-roster pitchers still left in Braves camp. Britton and Kennelly were the first position players cut this spring, neither one being a surprise.
There are now 44 active players in the Braves major league camp.

Today’s an off day, but there was a simulated game that Glavine and Reyes pitched in.

no game....
but most of the time, there are intrasquad games played on “off” days. they do play simulated games on days “off” though. i am glad to see heyward, freeman, and diory hernandez stay up for a little while longer.
also, it looks as though schafer is playing his way into a roster spot. i sure hope so. josh anderson could be trade bait very soon and he is not worth the roster spot he takes up. a slap-hitting speedster has to be able to walk, and he can’t.
i discussed this on another blog so i might as well share my thoughts on this one. frank wren did an interview during the 5th and 6th innings of yesterday’s game. he discussed the possibility of making another trade before season starts due to the surplus pitching in atlanta and gwinnett. he went on to say that many of our pitchers that will not have a starting job at AAA could be a 5th starter for many big league ball clubs. he also stated that he “does not know” where the power is going to come from in this lineup (sounded as though he was implying we might still have an impact trade left). i doubt it, but it would be nice.
my barber (who is myself because my head is clean-shaved) informed me of a possible trade:
soriano and prado for nick swisher
swisher makes sense in all areas. he can be that super utility fielder, such as derosa, to sub for left field, center field, right field, and first base on different days of poor matchups.
roster would shape up like this:
mccann
kotchman
kj
escobar
chipper
g. anderson
schafer
francoeur
norton
infante
diaz
swisher
ross
lowe
vazquez
jurrjens
kawakami
glavine
gonzalez
moylan
carlyle
acosta
boyer
logan/reyes
campillo/bennett
on any given day, we could have tons of power off the bench from both sides. it’s brilliant! plus, this is an even swap trade and would not cost any extra cash. get it done, frank!

Well it seems as if a trade were to be made it would consist of the Braves getting rid of some staring pitching (if that’s what you get from Wren’s interview). The only position I see that is still up in the air is centerfield. Are there any cheap sticks available that play center? What about first base? I could see Kotchman and some prospects be sent away for a power hitting first baseman. Of course, this probably wouldn’t work financially, but it still sounds good.

If we could afford to pay Swisher
We would have signed someone better than Garret Anderson in the first place.

Um, Soriano and Swisher make just about the same amount of money. It’d be an even swap cash-wise.

Not quite.
Maybe this year, but Swisher is signed for like 3 more years, and his salary ain’t exactly going down.
Your source for blind optimism.

Am I the only who thinks Soriano should not be traded?
Or let go to free agency after the season? This saddens me…..
by ChipperTeixeira89 on Mar 16, 2009 2:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Isn't Gonzo a free agent after this year as well?
I could stomach losing one of them, but definitely not both.
by Bobby Cocks on Mar 16, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Soriano has a fragile arm and an ballooning salary. The Braves are more likely to try to extend Gonzo.
Oh, Bobby.
by sdp on Mar 16, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, not for Swisher. Don’t know if I’d re-sign him with all the young internal options. I would like to keep Gonzo around if possible.
I thought you were talking about trading some excess starters, then you proposed a trade with a set-up man and utility infielder?

Wouldn't our trade pieces include the following?
Reyes
Morton
Pharr
Caryle
Soriano (doubt it)
Josh Anderson
Brandon Jones
Blanco
I don’t see Prado or Kotchman leaving. Who would replace these guys? The idea is to trade away our surplus for something we need. Like IF prospects, 3B prospects, or a right handed stick like Corey Hartish. Reyes and pharr would make the brewers rotation on opening day. You could add B. Jones who is not a horrible outfielder and with time could end up making a mlb career.

i think....
brain macann and chippur jonas should of been traded along with biff frankoor for a alburt pullholes. correct that bitches! what’s with the grammar police?

Hopefully
Next year we’ll see Hanson and Parr in the starting rotation. Either way, the next couple of years are going to be fun.

Oh pray tell, who is Parr replacing in the rotation? In a perfect world, Parr will be far, far away from Disney at this time next year.
