I remember reading at some juncture that no team has ever made the post season without having a winning record in spring training. Many may not place much of an emphasis on spring training, but I think Atlanta has come out of the gates nicely. Well it's not dispositive, a good spring usually equals a good season (anyone remember Andruw Jones torrid spring before he finished second in the MVP? My one caveat to the spring has been the Astros. What is that, five wins over the stars now?
Picture is still muddled for me at a couple positions. Could it be what we thought was a huge weakness might actually turn out to be a strength? While we still lack a legitimate consistent power threat in the outfield, Schaefer has played well, as has Francoeur, Diaz, and Blanco (for Venezuela). Add to that the Andersons and Atlanta might have, dare I say, a surplus of outfield talent.
There have been some whispers of possible trades prior to the season. It wouldn't suprise me. It would seem that we have six outfielders for three spots and probably a couple too many swingmen in the bullpen (Bennett, Carlyle). Any chance we see a trade here? What hole would we look to fill this at this point in the spring?
