This is according to a source to DOB. He doesn't say why the Braves are no longer pursuing him, but that seems to be the case. I really hope Glavine had nothing to do with this because I'd MUCH rather have Ohman. That being said, I also wonder if this means we're getting closer to acquiring an OF for whom we need the money.

Just saw this myself on MLBTR. If we’ve given up on Ohman, I hope its because we’re going to throw an $8 million offer at Dunn.

That bites. I wonder if it’s because we have the need for the money we offered him for someone else or he wanted more money. :\ Either way, I’m going to miss Ohman.

Ohman was a clubhouse favorite

So if the Braves have stopped pursuing him it’s because Cox is confident in what we have.
Were signing a FA OF
Trading for a OF

or maybe just maybe……..if Glavine can’t hold down No. 5 spot he’s willing to be our Loogy? I know it’s a long shot but it seems like a backup plan. Any who I’m sure I’ll get blasted for this but it is an option that can take place at some point.

Yeah, it is. LOOGYs are normally really effective against lefties. Glavine’s OPS against is 2 points different.

Ha ha I knew big joe was going to get you for that one. Glavine needs to retire its nothing he can do any more.

by That a boy on Feb 8, 2009 11:54 AM EST reply actions

so by "not pursuing" anymore

does that mean we pulled the offer we gave him back, or that we told him we werent going to increase it?

not sure. He’s had an offer on the table since November.

Interesting, two other possible suitors for Ohman, the Mets and Phils, seem like they aren’t interested anymore either. He may have waited himself out of a job.

by kalesi on Feb 8, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

He’ll have a job. If no one truly is interested, he’ll decrease his asking price.

by mattdiaz4life on Feb 8, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

this is why i think we should up our offer to him

if nothing else, it keeps him off the mets and phils! Kinda like what we did with Lowe.

I agree with a few of you. This provides a bit of an indication that we might up the offer to Glavine and really pursue brining in the left fielder.

Guess that means we will have an interesting battle in spring training for a lefty in the bullpen.

by kalesi on Feb 8, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions

Well this means...

…that either Boone Logan or Eric O’Flaherty will fill Ohman’s spot in the pen. I’ve seen O’Flaherty pitch, and wouldn’t mind seeing him in that role. Though I’ve never seen Logan, at least I don’t think I have.

by RainDelay on Feb 8, 2009 1:49 PM EST reply actions

A BIG Mistake on FW's Part

We are not going to sign a LOOGY/MR that is proven to a Glavine which has shown nothing and more of a gamble to be a #5 SP!!! We have more dependable options for the #5 SP spot (Campillo/Morton/JoJo/Parr/Hanson) IMO than we have unproven guys to be the LOOGY in the Pen ((Logan/O’flaherty/Ridgeway). Plus I think the young guys can give atleast what glavine could and more with a 160+ Innings/4.25 ERA at the #5 spot in the rotation….

I hope Glavine was offended by the 1-2 Mil + incentive offer and rejects the offer….So we can move on with out glavine and trade/Sign for a LFer/ Sign Ohman….

by Hanson-Ace on Feb 8, 2009 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly I don’t consider O’Flaherty all that “unproven” granted he didn’t get a lot of innings last year. It is a mistake, but one that can be slightly corrected. Ridgeway should come no where near a LOOGY role he needs to stay in Gwinnet, let him be the AAA Managers head ache.

Logan I like I’ve said, I’ve never seen him pitch so I can’t say ya or nay.

by RainDelay on Feb 8, 2009 11:10 PM EST up reply actions

i think Logan and O Flaherty can be serviceable LOOGYs, losing Ohman hurts our pen depth, he was simply a Loogy he was a solid setup man. in between him Moylan, Gonzo and Soriano we could have a lights out 7-9 inning and make sure we dont over use any of them, and considering three of the four haev injury issues thats a good thing.

Heyward,Hanson, and Shaffer r ready now!! Why do you think they havent signed the "right handed bat"?

by fatazfoot on Jan 7, 2009 8:59 PM EST

by Swo12bv on Feb 9, 2009 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

we have gonzo, logan, and oflaherty out of the pen as leftys. if you use gonzo in the 8th or 9th whenever there is a lefty he can do a loogys job and still continue the inning. that cuts out alot of ohmans value to us. we can also plop reyes in the pen as a long reliever/ lefty. we have a glut of options in the pen we have hudson coming back at some point in time. we have hanson chomping at the bit ready for a spot. who know what we will see from reyes, parr, morton, diamond, and medlan. and a real darkhorse is kimbrel.

by heapofoatmeal on Feb 8, 2009 2:43 PM EST reply actions

kimbrel is a great point.. although he has almost no experience in the minors. But its interesting to think about.

These guys are more or less unproven as a effective LOOGY. Don’t forget Ohman was more a MR than just a simple LOOGY. So his value is more than a simple LOOGY.. FW better hope that one of Logan/O’flaherty/Ridgeway be effective as the LOOGY on this team this year….

by Hanson-Ace on Feb 8, 2009 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

Unproven? O’Flaherty has held lefties to a .619 or so OPS. Logan something in the .700’s and his stuff is electric. heapofoatmeal is exactly right. The team has plenty of lefty options, a lefty bullpen ace (Gonzo), and a ton of out of option relievers that can do the middle relief work as well as Ohman or better. No reason to pay Ohman $4M a year when all these guys make a tenth of that. I’ll miss Ohman the character, but not the player.

ill agree with that… but where is he gonna start? High A? 2 months there and he may move up AA if he does well there he may have a chance at a callup… although i admit i hope he doesnt do that.

I’d throw him at the Beach and take it from there. If he dominates there like he did last year…well then, a September callup could be possible.

Kimbrel definitely should start off at Myrtle Beach. He dominated low A entirely but wasn’t as dominant in 3 and 2/3 innings at High A. Let him split the season between the Beach and Miississippi. We have plenty of options for the bullpen that are further along in their development in Stockman, Valdez, Marek, Medlen, and Michael Nix. As far as LH relievers go, Johnathan Venters and Kevin Gunderson could be ready for a LOOGY role. Also, if Jo Jo Reyes loses out on the 5th starter spot, he has a chance to be a decent reliever. For his career, he has allowed LHB a .680 OPS, not great but not bad. His stuff would likely play up in the bullpen as well

I’m not passing judgment on him for those 3 2/3 innings but I was just trying to put his dominance at low A in perspective. Anyway, it should be expected that his numbers will take that hit as he moves up, namely the K rate should decrease from just over 2 per inning pitched. Unless injury or ineffectiveness requires it, I think the organization will take a look at those guys who have put up good number at AA before rushing Kimbrel up.

Wow, first time I’ve ever seen Michael Nix mentioned as a possibility for a ML bullpen. I’d be all for it, he’s a good dude, but I’d guess he goes the way of guys like Ryan Basner and Glenn Tucker, solid, older pitchers who were just sort of filling rosters.

He isn’t a potential closer but he can be in someone’s bullpen if he can make some progress with his command. Decent stuff with movement thrown from a downhill plane is bullpen material. He was great in 07’ at Miss and was good again after being promoted to AAA this year.

You’re right, he’s a good pitcher. Big guy, knows what he’s doing on the mound, knows his place, and works hard. The thing is, he doesn’t really stand out in any way, and guys like that tend to get shafted. If they end up bringing in a few too many Minor League free agents, he might not even end up on Gwinnett’s roster, cause sometimes teams, for whatever reason, overvalue guys they bring in (this may already be a problem for him with Emiliano Fruto, Rafael Cruz, Juan Perez, and Mariano Gomez being brought in).

If he gets pushed off the AAA roster and enough guys from the Myrtle Beach bullpen move up (like Jeff Lyman, Cory Gearrin, Tyler Wilson, Mike Broadway, Nick Fellman, Brett Butts), he could find himself getting released.

This is complete speculation, and hopefully it won’t happen, since I like Nix a lot, but it’s certainly something to worry about with him, maybe for Brad Nelson too.

i merely pointed out kimbrel as an option. if he is rockin in august he could easily be up. he should start in high a or aa and could easily rocket through the system.

i think we will have a much better staff this year, which should be less injury prone. without the stress of having so many bad games were the bullpen has to cover so many innings people can be fresh. acosta was good until he came in for 1.1 ip every game and sucked then second inning out. boyer was good when he didnt get abused.

by heapofoatmeal on Feb 8, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

In the NL, only the Nats got less innings out of their starters than us (and they had one less game to do it in), so the bullpen got blown out easily. Cox had TWO long men last year, and he STILL managed to throw Boyer & Ohman into more games than them (though they each had less innings). The pen itself WASN’T THAT BAD…problem is, the wrong guys got too much work and got blown to hell. Thats another knock on Glavine…he averaged over 80 pitches and less than 5 innings a start. At least Reyes & Morton were able to average 5 while throwing that many pitches.

If Kimbrel is all he is being hyped to be, we’d better nurse and ease that guy up to the MLB club.
